shelley duvall has a bigger ego than her character in the movie would have you believe. Same with Danny Lloyd....lol kids say the darndest things. You know its funny how we idolize these actors and actresses when really they're people just like us. The only difference is some of them have a talent which they're getting paid for and some are getting paid for nothing. I guess the other difference is the ego these people must have. It does take ego to be famous. Its a hard life style im sure
Shelly on average is quite attractive. Look at it from this way, her natural father was a defense lawyer. And being able to tell how one is on stage, their real character and ethics, is hard but it seems she also has that going for her than most other women. She also seemed to be the only character role that gave any viewers hope of surviving thru everyone else's nonsense and personality changes and turning mad and dangerous
6:38 "And I admit....I admit that I do think I am." You go, Danny Lloyd. There is no shame in having confidence in your intellect. Refreshing to see confidence with modesty in a young guy, not confidence and cockiness. What a gorgeous kid. Hope he's doing what he wants to be doing in life, thirty one years later!
that kind of a 'raw' making of is great as we can see true emotions of all people working on this masterpiece. it is a lot better than those remastered and edited or talking heads at the roundtable.
Shelley deserves so much more credit for her role in this. Yes Jack is awesome, yes he made the movie for me, but she was perfect. People rag on her because she isn't a total knockout, it's pathetic.
Duvall was fantastic, however, she did not match up even closely to the Wendy in the book. Of course, Kubrick took off with the script and many things were different much to Mr. King's chagrin. Regardless, it's a beautiful piece of work and although not the BEST Kubrick film, comes very close.
shelley duvall liked cokecain and i never thought just seeing this movie in the theater that she was messed up a good amount of the time during shoots....................'wow'
I heard that some actors get physically ill if the part they play is an evil person or if they are a victim of a crime. I know that must be related to the energy that one has to put in playing such roles. So from my part I totally understand how stress can relate to her or Jack's part and how sick anyone will be for that matter. Oscar nomination to both of them and Director's too.!!!
@lialammas I totally agree, look what happened to Heath Ledger post The Dark Knight, ironically playing a role Jack did once upon a time. I think the only reason Jack has survived so many crazy roles is because he himself is also completely mad!
Shelley's performance is just amazing in this movie. Her EXTREME DISTRESS and FEAR are totally believable in the movie. I'd agree with Messylin that she had the toughest part. Kubrick pushed her to get the absolute best performance, which is OK! It's no discredit to her as an actress that she could give a better performance due to this kind of "manipulation". Her performance in this movie really makes it what it is, even though we tend to think of Jack more.
Shelley is amazing! You watch this movie and you can see and feel her fear thats how awesome she is!!Jack is great in all his roles but Shelley really knocks this out of the ballpark! Love her.
stankley kubrick acted that way to get the most out of her because she was incapable of doing herself, shelly will be remembered for this film and this film only and that is down to s.k,genius film maker ,nothing like him since
I used to think Shelley was a flake, like she was being a whiner, now I learn that Kubrick was not only a prick, he was a prick by design simply to get the role from her that he wanted, basically to make her feel as shitty as her character might. She wasn't getting sick because she's soft, it was because he was killing her. really makes you reevaluate the way you think about people
Kubrick seemed to be a pretty uncompromising person to work with.
.. It's funnny , I wonder what kind of a office level manager he would've made. Makes you think it's a good thing (some) people find their passion and place in this life.
@unfinished8kt i think it made the point they were trying to make though...she was an attention seeker...she even wanted to make a drama out of bits of hair coming out..its pretty obvious..dont get me wrong..i love shelley duvall..thin shes one of the greatest actresses around..
One must realize that Shelly's emotion is not all artificial as expected from standard show biz. The pressure she was under from the director, and the fact that few films historically like the Exorcist that took the lives of several employees during that filming will certain appreciate Shelly's
@sraphael Don't take my word for it, that is just what I heard directly from Elyn Burnstein who played the Mother role of Regan. Elyn said in an interview that was shown on the remastered version just before the film followed, that several of the staff had strange things happen to them anywhere from being really sick to actually death(I think Burk Denning's relative or friend-not sure who was not acting but employed with the making of the film died on site from a heart-attack, or stroke.
Because she is modest, and one who really appreciates human compassion, as I can tell here from what you said, the ones with all the make up and glamour in movies are the complete opposite out of the movies. And Shelly, has shown that in real life. She really is beauty in the purest sense as well as in the heart
I always apreciated Shelley Duvall in the film because the fear & horror she conveyed were so dominant they had sections from the score arrangements written around her screaming.
Shelley had the harder part of everything - not being movie star cool, not being a screen goddess, not having the flashy, villainous role. People who slate her just to commend Jack are deeply pathetic. You try her role, you probably wouldn't last a week without going out of your head as well.
@Messylin I think her acting was amazing in this movie, and no matter how she would act, people would still complain about her looks, which aren't lacking at all.
@Messylin I totally agree, I'd even go as far as saying from watching this footage that she was actually bullied in a sense! She played the role perfectly in my opinion, so underrated.
@Messylin people slate her just for the looks, i mean wtf guys, she is not that bad, and even if she is, who cares ? she is a great actress, she pulled her part flawlessly !.
one of the best films ever, kubrick was between being an asshole and you know god.
@johnnytastetest it seems like you don't even realize how stressful this movie was for her. in close to every one of her scenes she is hysterical and crying, so let's see you spend everyday of six months of your life crying like you're about to be slaughtered and not want to pass out or get away from it.
@TR0L0L0LO Well, the things are so tight, we can almost see what religion he is. Cripes, everything was big in the 70's. They could have grabbed SOMETHING baggier.
So was Shelley really doing coke on the set? What do ya'll think? Her expression at 4:00 is definitely suspicious. I've seen people take up nose candy before and that's definitely a common look.
That Shelley Duvall looks like she'd give your average Human Resourses staff member a bitch of a time, let alone a director, who would have had to micro-manage her to get even subtle changes in her performance, all the while putting up with her passing out on set like we see, or her complaining about how her hair is falling out. That would've sucked.
I love how Kubrick threw on some Stravinsky as a temp score while filming. I wonder if that he or other directors do often, or is it just something to get child actors to feel the mood they want out of them.
Hey everybody - I just released my solo album "Mirror Image" that contains ambient songs (and upbeat songs) heavily inspired by Stephen King's novel and movies The Shining, as well as Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. If you're interested you can check out the songs on my youtube page, and links to my myspace page and places to download the full album are on my youtube channel as well :) .
intersting comment by jack about not prefering not being in control- I would say that his performance is so dominating that it detracts from the film. also the obvious lack of respect afforded duvall bleeds into her performance: it is this that makes the film such an uncomfortable watch
@jojoc197 Infamously so, yes. And of course he's going to be...I don't think it was intentionally mean, but he's a serious film maker who needs 100% from his team and she was.....well she was her lol
my man Jack is such a horn dog. All through this little doc he's flirting with Kubrick's daughter. Rumor has it he would have crazy sex parties at his house all through the sixties and seventies. After seeing this...........I believe it. You go Jack:)
I think Stanley Kubrick wanted to shoot Shelley Duvall, about half way through the picture, cause her range as an actor was so limited. It really pissed him off.
Shelley Duvall was an important part of this movie. You can't tell me that her scary scenes weren't terrorific! Her expresions showed real panic! I believe she played her character amazingly.
@murifan2008 : I was just thinking the same thing watching part 2. She was so perfect for this role; just odd looking enough to add to the erie quality of the film, and completely convincing in her trust of Jack then subsequent horror of him. The casting of this film was superb from largest down to the smallest roles.
@burstmatress : Yeah, she isn't an atractive woman, I know. Her role in the movie isn't supposed to be the one of an atractive one. You can feel the fear in his face when Jack tries to kill her, or when the ghosts appear. It was freaking scary, but perfect!
@murifan2008 in his face? you are talking about her, right? well, about you thinking she was perfect... thats your opinion which you were entitled too. Personally, I thought she was awful, and thats my opinion which I too, am entitled to.. Thought NIcholson was Nicholson really - does he ever act!? But he was well suited for Jack Torrance.

my man Jack is such a horn dog. All through this little doc he's flirting with Kubrick's daughter. Rumor has it he would have crazy sex parties at his house all through the sixties and seventies. After seeing this...........I believe it. You go Jack:)

Starting at 4:30: doing a classic Stanley Kubrick shot (following behind the person as they move through a corridor) of Stanley Kubrick! Genius.

Shelley Duvall looks like a pain to work with. Nicholson however looks like a director's dream, he does EXACTLY what you envision him to

The casting of this film was superb from largest down to the smallest roles.
geridg 1 year ago 4
@geridg : Yeah, it was.

@murifan2008 pity she looks like a fish.... or lady gaga, which is worse.
burstmatress 1 year ago
@burstmatress : Yeah, she isn't an atractive woman, I know. Her role in the movie isn't supposed to be the one of an atractive one. You can feel the fear in his face when Jack tries to kill her, or when the ghosts appear. It was freaking scary, but perfect!
murifan2008 1 year ago
@murifan2008 in his face? you are talking about her, right? well, about you thinking she was perfect... thats your opinion which you were entitled too. Personally, I thought she was awful, and thats my opinion which I too, am entitled to.. Thought NIcholson was Nicholson really - does he ever act!? But he was well suited for Jack Torrance.

Why does everyone rave about Shelley Duvall in this film? I can't stand her, she annoys me. I'm quite sure Kubrick didn't care much for her either
joshisthemanfullstop 1 year ago
why he played that music , interting, how they record the musci into the film after?

If I was a celebrity I wouldn't bother being nice to everybody, I don't see the point, I'd get annoyed with shaking everybody's hands.

I think it was in bad taste to show the clip of Shelly Duvall being sick directly after she said that she like attention.
