I thought I would share this website: teoria.com. It is a great way to practice your sheet music and such as you can test yourself. It has been a great help to me.
So would a C sharp be the same as a D flat? Which one would you use? Does it just go with the melody? Like if the previous note in the melody is progressing upwards you would generally use a sharp?
I'm answering your question because this really confused me when I first learned about flat and sharp notes.
A C# and Db are enharmonic notes, which means they sound the same but are written differently. Let's say you're playing in G major; G major has one sharp note - F#. However, since you write the # sign in the key signature at the beginning of a piece, you don't need to write the # sign before the F note every time there's an F#. However, if the note goes out of the key (cont.)
you use a sharp or flat, depending on what key you're in. The key signatures for G major and D major have sharps them, while the key signatures for F and Bb have flats in them If your key signature has sharps in it, then mark any notes going outside the key as sharp and flat if the key contains flats. I don't think a piece can contain both flats and sharps, I think it's one or the other. I hope this helps ;) Also, if this is incorrect someone please tell me :D
Is there any mathemathical reason for naming certain frequences A,B,C,D,E,F,G, while others Cb, Fb, etc? I.e. why those 7 are elected "white keys", while others are "black"? Is it just historical?
for the staff paper i find it easier especially with music theory courses to just pick up a music dictation note book, you have staff paper on one side and lined for notes on the other. :) they're like 2-3 dollars at Walmart.

Thus far I would just like to say, maximum respect for your time and effort for making these videos. You come across very well and im sure you are a great teacher to all your pupils. Much love :)
Which I do plan on finishing- and are very helpful. However, that will be done at a later time, I was wondering if you could direct me to the next lesson of "how to play piano" #5.
Hey Andrew, I've been following your lessons up until now and didn't realize that along the way, I had strayed from your piano lessons. I had retraced my steps on youtube, and found out that after your fourth video of "how to play piano", the only video link listed that is similar to the ascending order of your video lessons is that of your "music theory" lessons.
I really appreciate what your doing for all of us newbs in music out there! I have watched other vids before this to try and teach myself how to compose but it was complicated because I knew so little about the basics. I will keep watching your vids to the end. And just a question in this vid while you were explaining sharps and flats I think that notes BC and EF don't have a sharp or flat in between (E# or Fb, B# Cb) right? And that still makes it a semitone right not a whole?
Oh That crow making those key's sharp XD im sorry i love your videos but this helped me alot on learning my whole tone semi tone i got a 2 on my music theory test at my high school (:
Andrew....you look more mature than the one in the first video in 2008!.....BUT still very nice ....unlike other teachers that scare students away....thanks a lot....looking forward to your next video!
been in band 6 years, poor school no music theory class. I know most of this by learning on the fly, but its amazing what you can learn going back over the rudimentary material.
Btw I also play ocarina. Learned some piano, and want to learn Violin.
Know some guitar, play tuba 6 years and trumpet half a year. keep it up ^^ it helps even intermediate players.

Does a accidental last for only the bar that its in or the remaining of the song?
like if you had this ( ] = bar line )
#F-F-F-F ] F-F-F-F
would that be F# all the way through or would it be
F# - F# - F# - F# ] F - F - F -F

question again:
if we put sharp in the F (which make it Fis), will it give the same effect to the higher/lower F so the higher/lower F become Fis too?
i'll be waiting for your reply
thanks mannn
may God bless you
