This song reminds me of my Mom. She had Cancer and the lyrics explain the way my house looked before she passed away. She passed When i was 9. I found her deseaced, im 14 now and i think about her everyday. She was a very elegant and just a great mother, musician. I miss her and I connect with her now through music that i write. This song describes my mom during her cancer and how she was dying and nobody noticed literally, and then me in present day just dying inside because how much i miss her

I absolutely love this song! I first saw it on television, as part of the video with the lady dreaming in her bed. I thought the video was very clever and whimsical, and the song had a really nice sound to it. I feel that the song is about a woman who is depressed and very lonely.

But, I can easily see it as her daydreams as well.

Like, "fights for her life" can be taken as her contemplating suicide or a silly fight fight with pirates in her mind or something.

And "nobody knows" could be taken as nobody knows what she thinking, or nobody knows where she goes, because nobody cares.

I can relate VERY much. This is my favorite song now, I mean, I can actually SEE myself doing all of this. Dream-like, empty, lonely, daze-y and very sad. But also kind of whimsical just with trying to keep pleasant, for it is within the character of the woman in the song, and the woman in the listener. But she's lost mentally~ And in her heart, there's just no love. Every idea or thought she's having; it's just fleeting, quickly passing, and he can't bring herself to do it just to get sympathy.

I think I have to agree with the either depression or suicide thing. I dont think it is meant to be interpretted as suicide though, I think it is just depression from feeling alone like she doesnt fit in. sounds dreamlike to me. Not suicidal or depressing, but moreso whimsical and fantastic. Some of the stuff he says like "she pours a daydream in a cup, a spoon of sugar sweetens up" makes me think she's in a daze or dreaming. Sure most of it makes sense in a daily routine type of way, but there are small inconsistencies here and there in the lyrics that remind me of a dream.

I think it is a mental issue and she's either contemplating suicide. That is something much more hidden to themselves rather than cancer. People are more reluctant to say that they are suicidal than to say they have cancer. It's more of a me against the world attitude. And nobody knows what's going on. It makes much more sense. Its a struggle everyday. In a way, it's a cancer in the mind of her lonely soul.
