Hey this is awesome, I especially liked the fill at @3:06 sounds exactly like Bruford. It was stumbling me for long time but after watching this I'm a step closer to getting it. Thank you!
@MrJesseG123 Thank you! And THAT is what these cover videos are all about--either teaching, or simply for entertainment under "Fair Use". (Are you listening WMG?) Glad it helped you a bit!
@3daypriest Thanks! Did you see? They just blocked my Genesis' 'Duke's End'. I really can't stand these record companies. All we're doing is giving them free exposure. We're not making a penny off of their music. Why is it that cover bands can go out into the bars every night and are allowed to earn a living playing all copyrighted material, but we're not allowed to use it for pure entertainment/educational purposes? Nobody's gonna pirate these songs with my drums on top of it all.
@17drums I don't get it. I can understand such things if people are trying to make money off other peoples' work, but a drum cover? Some people just take things too far.
Amazing, Dave! No easy feat to drum Crimson! Love this song, probably one of my faves from their heavy catalogue. Your drummiing is excellent, precise.
@amccann7 Thanks so much, Amy! Coming from such an accomplished and brilliant player as yourself, it really means alot. Oh, and I visited your friend Bob MacLean's site. Naturally, I subscribed! He's great too. Thanks for the recommendation.
@ScalerWave Thanks! Yeah, I've got each mic doing double or triple duty. I really need a 24-channel DIGITAL board. I'm currently using a 16-channel analog, with only an 8-channel interface to work with Cubase. So my sound is kind of hamstrung. When I get a couple of thousand to blow, I'll upgrade! As for this song, it's not my favorite KC album, but just did this as a collaboration, (which, I'm told, should be posted very soon). I'm currently working on material from the 'Discipline' album.
Hehey! What a good choice Dave! Excellent job! My fave Crimson album - and Starless is a "forevergreen"!
This camera aspect is very good too! And very well changed the cymbals to the music. If only I enjoyed "Toccata" (ELP) in Your interpretation! I bet that would be even better than Palmer,s one!
Superb drumming Dave. Looking forward to seeing the collab. You've got a great drumming style and very fluid movement. The foam dampener pad on the cymbal gave it a nice sound.
You have such amazing hearing abilities to recognize all those motes and accents and you really know your kit, knowing exactly where to play it all. It's like watching a pianist playing his piano. How does one get to that?
@xmartanx Thanks! Practice, practice and more practice gets you to the point of total familiarity with your kit, and also allows for the total free musical expression on that kit. And listening, listening and more listening develops the ear. I also use different sound sources when picking something out by ear. I listen to the piece on different CD players at home, in my car, off of YouTube, etc. In doing so, I pick up stray notes I missed. I still miss some, but not as many!
@17drums Totally agree! I do the same: listen the same work in my hifi by it,s speaker system, then by headphones (different ones!), then in the CD player in my wife's car (she is not always happy:), then in my car by tape. Each gives a bit different tone, but You know well.
Maybe we are musically more sensitive drummers:)
Anyway thank for the advice tuning snare. I do the same as You - tight up the upper head to max and and let a bit looser the skin under, but the result is far from You:)
Sounding great Dave!!! That's some fine playing! Man I can't wait to see/hear the final collaboration. Hellava tune for your first collab! :D Cheers my friend!
@SteveBDrums Thanks, Steve. I've heard the finished product, and it sounds great. The other musicians involved carry the whole song, that's how good they are. I'm just drumming along to it. (Probably why I posted this cover--Hey! Look at me! I'm in this band too you know!)
Another intricate, fantastic classic rock piece. I was beginning to wonder what 17drums was up to as I haven’t receive any updates recently. But seeing as though you only do the complex bits - it takes time. Excellent work Dave - keep sending those updates.
@ThePromovideo Thanks! I had finished this up a while ago as a collab, and only just decided to post it as a cover also. It's not a particularly tough example of Bruford's playing. (I read that he didn't even want it on the album.) And he's also a little sloppy on it. Listen for the part at around 3:50 on the original, and you can hear Bruford clacking his sticks over a simple fill. My next KC project, 'Indiscipline' (studio version) will take me QUITE awhile to pick out and play. See ya then!
@rhythmicbeast Thanks, Mars. But credit Bill Bruford for the cymbal variations. Although it was done as a collaboration, and I was allowed wiggle-room to play what I wanted, I pretty much stuck to the original Bruford script. I'd say it's 99% Bruford, 1% me. (Or maybe 98/2)?
Thanks Joe! Yeah, it'll be my first collab, so I'm excited. How's the 'Duke's End' project going? Keep checking for it every day. Any idea when it might be up?
Tremendously smooth. Fantastic job!

MrGutentag69 3 weeks ago
@MrGutentag69 Thank you. As for the polyrhythm, you got me! I'm just playing what Bruford was playing. (I play by ear). Thanks for watching.
