I've heard that it sounds like this because the sound engineer does a horrible job EQ'ing both bass drums so one sounds louder than the other, but if that's not the case, this is absolutely pathetic.

They "correct" some of the live stuff he does on official releases now, as far as I know.. He WAS once able to do it right, though.. Watch the Kill/Ride medleys from 94/95, they haven't been messed around with, and he kills it.

At the Big 4 show in Indio last month I was directly in front of the speakers stage right--about 100ft away from the band. I was surprised Lars had trouble with One at that show too. Lars is a big inspiration to my drumming, creative wise, but live is another story...Also, they skipped the main riff of Blackened between the solo and final verse--my fav part because in the album it switches from upbeat/downbeat emphasis on the snare/kick but I guess that's too complicated too.

As a drummer, I have a ton of respect for Lars because he was a huge inspiration to me when I was like 12 years old. However, it does seem like he could care less about improving his skills or even maintaining them (if they ever were that great.. maybe it's all studio magic). That is the opposite of inspiring these days.
@adustum Some of it studio magic, I'm sure. But he was still a lot better back in the 80s and early 90s. Listen to some live clips from the Justice tour and you'll see he was much better at double bass and overall playing in general. I'm sick of people blaming it on his age though. There are other drummers like Dave Lombardo, Paul Bostaph and Tom Hunting who are as old or nearly as old as him and can still play as good as they did when they were 20. Lars is just rich and lazy, period.

Yeah I saw the Oslo show in 2010, and I was REALLY disappointed by Lars's sloppiness. He ruined every song! The other guys were great, but they kinda have to follow the drums whatever they do wrong...

I'm sure there's many decent reasons why Lars couldn't play that night (probably mainly due to rushing)..... but it's still just unacceptable for a band of their magnitude

@xtinn92 I challenge you to watch a video of Nicko McBrain playing The Trooper, at an older age. It's aeons beyond what Lars could ever do. Or Dave Lombardo at any live Slayer show. Or anything Gene Hoglan has recorded lately. Or Pete Sandoval before his recent surgery. Or Anthrax's Charlie Benante. Or Atheist's Steve Flynn. All of similar ages to Lars', all still brilliant. Lars isn't old, he has a shitty attitude and doesn't practice. You're supposed to get better as you play more, not worse.
The sound of the bass drum I believe was enhanced for a more clear and vibrant effect but if you watched people who recorded the performance using their own cameras, you clearly see his leg work. In the Nimes DVD itself, you can see him doing double bass.
One of the first semi-challenging double bass parts I leared, probably like a lot of drummers. Lars is fucking lazy as fuck and sucks ass here.

@coronet67 i dont believe money has always to do with you did something right or wrong...is the public that judges... besides the band isn't HE there are other musicians,etc...there are many factors involved in an economic and fame "success"...in my opinion, "a thousand flies COULD be wrong", which i apply in this case (maybe) only referring to Lars.yes he must be doing something right...everything but drumming...anyway this is getting old haha, these are my opinions, i respect any others.

@Arbiter321 he isn't sick or anything. if he sucks more than before is because of non practicing.pay attention to the volume of the fast double basses on any of metallica records.It always sounds softer and difuse, even considering it is a recording and he had all the tools to improve sound by editing, which he probably used too, so, anyway, it is my opinion...having the advantages he has (money, time, fame) he could have improved, but he's been always the same.or the worst, he involutioned.

@Arbiter321 dyers eve live at nimes ' 09: good performance...but I dont hear any double bass...he didn't even attempted to do those parts as he recorded them...maybe as it was being filmed with high quality and many cams and (I suppose) being recorded for a cd he didnt want to try and get something like in this video for example...ruining completely the cd and filmation...anyway...Lars was the reason for me to start playing drums (when i watched until it sleeps first time) so I respect him very

@Arbiter321 much.but i dont think he is really a "GREAT" drummer at all...basically dyers eve (drums speaking) is a hardcore pattern with some changes in the compasses (some a little complex or "progressive"), but: no high speed, no double stroke rolls, no dynamics...anyway, nothing "GREAT"...I still LOVE metallica... well we could continue this conversation in a bar or something haha (joke, im from Argentina) but i mean.....

@Soga87 Lars was never a spectacular drummer, and he's said so himself. He still has talent with it though, and obviously double bass just isn't his thing. He can do it, he just prefers not to, and manages to be a good rummer despite that. And again, he's gone on record saying that he isn't a great drummer, he just fits in Metallica.

At the Big 4 show in Indio last month I was directly in front of the speakers stage right--about 100ft away from the band. I was surprised Lars had trouble with One at that show too. Lars is a big inspiration to my drumming, creative wise, but live is another story...Also, they skipped the main riff of Blackened between the solo and final verse--my fav part because in the album it switches from upbeat/downbeat emphasis on the snare/kick but I guess that's too complicated too.

As a drummer, I have a ton of respect for Lars because he was a huge inspiration to me when I was like 12 years old. However, it does seem like he could care less about improving his skills or even maintaining them (if they ever were that great.. maybe it's all studio magic). That is the opposite of inspiring these days.

@adustum Some of it studio magic, I'm sure. But he was still a lot better back in the 80s and early 90s. Listen to some live clips from the Justice tour and you'll see he was much better at double bass and overall playing in general. I'm sick of people blaming it on his age though. There are other drummers like Dave Lombardo, Paul Bostaph and Tom Hunting who are as old or nearly as old as him and can still play as good as they did when they were 20. Lars is just rich and lazy, period.

Yeah I saw the Oslo show in 2010, and I was REALLY disappointed by Lars's sloppiness. He ruined every song! The other guys were great, but they kinda have to follow the drums whatever they do wrong...

Dude, they all fuck up all the time. '89 was their best year. That back when the fuckin up seemed cool tho because they compensated with high energy.
I'm sure there's many decent reasons why Lars couldn't play that night (probably mainly due to rushing)..... but it's still just unacceptable for a band of their magnitude

@RomanOnTheDrum No doubt about that ...speed diminishes -playing drums is very much like sport -reflexes must be sharp and that's why when ...for example boxers reach a certain age -they tend to be slower -hence, they tend to retire then ...well ...a drummer in a big band in demand will probably play on -& this is the result .

Or anything Gene Hoglan has recorded lately. Or Pete Sandoval before his recent surgery. Or Anthrax's Charlie Benante. Or Atheist's Steve Flynn. All of similar ages to Lars', all still brilliant. Lars isn't old, he has a shitty attitude and doesn't practice. You're supposed to get better as you play more, not worse.

The sound of the bass drum I believe was enhanced for a more clear and vibrant effect but if you watched people who recorded the performance using their own cameras, you clearly see his leg work. In the Nimes DVD itself, you can see him doing double bass.
