  • FIDDLE MY WILDDLY WILDEL

  • lovely . . .

  • Just beautiful. It made me cry. Perhaps my favorite song.

  • absolutely beautiful playing

could someone explain to me exactly what the dobro is and how it works?

the song glimpses perfection... so beautiful

  • @DawnMelodyMusic

A Dobro is essentially a six-string guitar with a metal, usually aluminum soundboard, imbedded within the spruce wood top. It provides a resonating 'twang' sound and projects the string vibration from the body through vents cut in the aluminum. The strings are usually set high off of the fretboard so a slide can be used. Gibson Guitars owns the trademark.

  • The music was superb, but please, Jenna, promise me that you will never go back to that hairdresser!

  • One word...B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L Aussie:)

  • beautiful - thank you

  • muy bonita la musica

  • Saw Jenna Reid preform at An Lanntair in Stornoway just about 2 years ago to this day. Gave a fine performance that night, something I expect is the norm with her.

  • Come on friends: For those of you who think you must download the music are too mechanical about it. Listen to it, work out the melody and timing on your mandolin and then also pay close attention to the bowing accents. Key of A.

  • um. and .....Jerry Douglas? Title?

  • Went there. it looks like it is just sheet music. I also dont know what to download to get in

  • I was just wondering if anyone has the fiddle tab for this

  • @ishadowfax1 go to abc navigator

  • I love this tune, one of my favorite. This particular performance is really good, I think it brings the feelings that composer wanted us to feel

  • i farted..... ahhhh music to my ears

  • Saw Jenna and Aly play a fast jig on this episode. so funny, aly sat there, so relaxed, fiddling away at light speed, every so often jenna gives him this look, as if to say:"how the F*** is he doing this so easily?"

  • LOVE the twin fiddles!!!

  • simply wonderful

  • Wonderful. I can't stop listening!

  • @sgtcrab1 I would say Amaj

  • @sgtcrab1 Key of A major

  • Wonderful ......

  • One of my favorite tunes...just lovely.

  • Stunningly beautiful!

  • Amazing.

  • I heard Caroline Goulding's version on the radio last night. Just love the song so much!

  • Exquisite. Aly Bain's genius behind this is apparent.

  • A lot of talent obviously went into the collaboration, and honestly, I wish it would continue! The lineup accross the board is magnificent, and the blending of talent was meant to be. . .it does it for me!

  • @zephyrquartz i have to agree it is beautiful then when ali plays harmonising fiddle it moves to another plateau this man is national treasure i wish the transatlantic sessions were back on it's the only programme that made the licence fee worth paying.

  • This particular rendition, in my mind, is particularly exquisite from arrangement to presentation! You are to be commended for the professionalism and care given the piece. The true measure of a composition is whether the impact draws you in forever. . .I will always be there. . .thank you!

  • I've been lucky enough to hear Jenna play live a number of times and her playing takes my breath away every time. Not only is she gifted, she's generous enough to share it with those of us that just love to sit and listen. God Bless Jenna x

  • ...and good gravy, Jenne Reid is as beautiful as her playing.

  • Yep she sure is , inside and out, in a very real down to earth way, not the Hollywood glamerous style. I've developed a huge crush on her while learning to play this tune exactly the way she does. Hey no harm in a healthy fantasy life. Think I'll join you in scotch right now.

Whiles I'll see a bonny girl,

That gies my heart an affa dirl,

    My concience taks the blame.

The wife she says she disna care

    Go window shoppin onywhere

As lang's ye buy at hame.

  • My sentiments exactly, and keep up the good work. When you refer to joining her in "scotch", I hope you are thinking of having a drink with her because scotch is a drink and Scottish are people.

  • I was refering to joining madpipetn on a good 20yr old scotch in the Great Smokey Mountains as described below.

Rabbie Burns, and Sir Walter Scott often refered to Scottish people as "Scotch". I suspect the modern taboo againt calling people "Scotch" has more to do with how we were taught "proper English" in school than any genuine Scottish tradition. Either way, I just can't get my knickers in a twist over it.

  • @1offkilter ...what a tragic mistake...listen to the music....as if that gem of wisdom made any difference to the posting

  • Every time I hear this, I imagine myself just rocking gently on the front porch here in the Great smoky Mountains of East Tennessee with a pipe bowl full of my favorite tobacco and a glass of a good 20 yr. Scotch....ahhhh....peace. Seriously, I could listen to this all day.

  • Love what you do. . .it is abiding with us (at least with the like-minded), and would love to hear what you do with the Ashoken. . .may God bless. . .keep doing what you do. . .the celtic influence is commanding.

  • What a beautiful rendition, I would love to hear more collaboration. . .

  • Beautifully played!

  • McDonald was argueably Great Britains finest ever soldier, the then Govenor of Ceylon spread FALSE rumours that McDonald was a homosexual because McDonald was a working class man, result, Mcdonald shot himself in a Paris hotel.

He had in fact got married in defience of Lord Kitcheners direct orders and had two children.

this tune is a fine tribute from J Scott Skinner.

  • Very sweet!

  • maybe people often think of this like a lament for an excellent soldier and commander, maybe like a respect thing..but i'm feeling it's not that at all, it seems like grief and sadness for just the loss of a friend-what do you people feel?

it's for me the most emotional lament i ever heard either way

  • While it is in reconition of Sir Hecor, it is indeed a lament at his passing, more than a refection of his achievements.

    ...we said.

  • stunning piece of music

  • Beautiful song. Powerful performance.

  • Dochas was such a great and brilliant apprenticeship...xxx...thanks Jenna.

  • Ah beautiful. Jenna Reid and Julie Fowlis were on tour in the U.S. earlier this year. I am amazed by the talent these young ladies possess. Jenna's incredible performance with the fiddle was awesome. She leaves a nice lasting impression, may she fare well in all that she does.

  • my uncle sent me the link for this and i think it's good and calming

  • This is music, nothing else to add, a master piece.

  • Beautiful

  • very natural and comfortable playing. Skillfully played with flair and from the heart. Does what music is supposed to do "tell a story and evoke emotion."

  • Well said.

  • @gen65743 Just Beautiful....

  • A coronach composed by James Scott Skinner in memory of Major-General Sir Hector Archibald MacDonald KCB DSO (1853-1903).

  • i likes a good harmony.doesnie come much better an is. many thanks.

  • Having recorded this piece twice, I must say that this is my favorite version. It's incredible.

    J. Scott Skinner must be smiling...

    El McMeen

  • Great playing ....bravo

  • Gorgeou.Anabsolute gem.

    Many Thanks

  • absolutely brilliant

  • Check out Tony McManus's version

  • It doesn't get any better then this. Thank you for sharing.

  • Beautiful, simply beautiful - superb tone.

  • I had tears in my eyes, that was sooooo beautiful

  • Amazing!!

  • Isnt Hector a Greek name?

  • Hector is actually Trojan. This song was written by James Skinner for his friend (who committed suicide), named Hector MacDonald--a general.

Of course, there is a play on the Trojan hero Hector from Homer's Iliad who fights despite knowing that he is going to die. So, even though Hector was a Trojan, the Greeks admired his adherence to the heroic code. And, of course the Romans lauded Hector as well, believing themselves the descendants of Trojans.

  • It's usually used as the English for the Gaelic name Eachann/Eacharna

  • Indeed Hector McDonald commited suicide in Paris around 1920, after his so called superior officers spread stupid and pathetic gossip about his sexuality.

Hector McDonald led his men at the front and was highly respected and revered by his troops.

A situation some what missed and never really seen by his English compatriates who were jealous of his admiration and respect by his troops.

As a result he shot himself is a Paris hotel.

  • Rank isn't always earned like it was in Hector's case. :'|

Skinner's tune is certainly one of the most recogniseable Scottish laments ever written!

  • Hector McDonald a crofters son from Dingwall Invernessire. Who was a leader of men who greatly respected him. He died in Paris after shooting himself, due to some stupid so called superiors in the British army spreading some pathetic stories about him. He has a lovely monument on the hill just outside Dingwall in his memory.

  • aly bain is my idol!

  • Good news for all fans is the release of the DVD "Transatlantic Sessions: Series 3" bringing together the best of Nashville, Ireland and Scotland to perform what has been called "the greatest backporch shows ever".

All of the six half-hour programmes from the BBC/RTÉ TV series are included, recorded in a beautiful old converted farm steading in the Perthshire Highlands.

  • Sounds excellent, keep up the good work.

  • Simply beautiful. Well trained yet plays from the heart.

    Mac Campbell

  • 26 years young!

  • How old is Jenna here?

  • Whatever age she was in late March of this year.

  • 26 years young!

  • oh yes , THANK YOU !!! : )

  • The aspect ratio seems to have gone a little too widescreen here, but I know how tricky that stuff can be.

    Audio is gorgeous. Thanks.

  • Lovely tune. Nice fiddling. Great to see Phil again. He thought me one of my first tunes "Drowsy MAggy", way back in the seventies in the folkclub in ARnhem (Netherlands)
