eh, this is more of a case of ut's popular now it sucks. believe it or not, death note is a fairly intelligent anime with decent quality storywriting. haruhi, at least the novels, are actually more existentialist than it looks, what with the implications of the universe being maybe only 3 years old and God being a schoolgirl who doesn't even know she's God.

naruto bleach are pretty lame, but the dragon ball and DBZ were classics until the studio made them overstay their story. (continued.)

Well, it goes without saying Ninja Scroll and Akira are the greatest anime films ever made. But there is definitely some good stuff still around and still recent. Dead Leaves is absolutely awesome. Sure, it's not as brutal as Wicked City, but it sure is unique. Gantz, Elfen Lied, Claymore - Those are the recent series who still live up to the good old blood and gore of anime. DBZ, Naruto, Bleach, Haruhi, etc. Well, that's just kid stuff.
