This region is responsible for most of the annual tornadoes in the Us and covers most of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and some regions of Florida, New Mexico, N/S Dakota...just google inage "Tornado Alley Map" and you will see it.

Shelf clouds usually don't pose the threat that wall clouds do. Shelf clouds are formed when the downdraft from the storm spreads out ahead of the storm, and forces the warm, moist air to rise upward and roll due to wind shear, which in turn forms the "shelf cloud". A shelf cloud is usually a sign of high winds, and is usually followed by rain. I can understand why one might want to take shelter after seeing that, since it DOES look a little threatening, but I doubt there was a tornado threat.

@CastleofAnime It's definitely not unheard of for a storm that strong to produce both tornados and straight line winds. Its just that the tornados forms where the updraft is strongest which is usually in the rear, away from the downburst(where the shelf cloud is)

May 3rd 1999 I wason I-70 east in south eastern Colrado...to my north I saw this very strange cloud that looked as if it was stacked..I mena like dishes stacked upon one another that went up..up..up and appeared just southeast of the rockies...it appeared to be headed south east too...really really weird. To the south was this 1/16th of an inch almost purple front moving deep across the plains way way off....weird indeed..can anyone explain what i was looking at? What was happening?

We just had one of these a few hours ago the storm looked fucking scary approaching it was scary it was like 65 degrees then all of a sudden the wind picks up and the temperature feels like its about 40 it was scary but the storm actually wasn't that bad.

u did'nt t have to go downstairs yet thats the downdraft part of the storm in the front, tornados form in the updrafts at the back end. u could have stayed upstairs for like another 10-20 mins and then if its clear enough after the rain to see the tornado if ther was one you could of stayed the entire time.
