Boards of Canada had *nearly* overused it; but the Mellotron has been around for over 40 years... I assure you it has been used quite a bit! I think you can google for a UK website that has a large list of albums with 'tron. My point is with BoC and BMSR the flute sound is in danger of becoming a cliche, which is indeed bad for this style of music- it becomes a handle for haters to bash the music with. ANY sound can be overused... you must be very young ;-)
you're right, i am pretty young (19), but i knew that the mellotron was a really old instrument. i guess the difference between you and i is that you've heard it used for ages in a lot of different bands, and BMSR was the first one i heard that used it a lot. i can see how you'd be afraid of it becoming cliche though, since its such an awesome sound.
Actually I've never heard any solid mellotron flute in BoC's stuff, unless of course they distorted the crap out of it. They seem to use some kind of electric piano more than anything else.
Actually the flute in the Sixtyniner might of been a mellotron but to me it vastly differs from the one Black Moth uses.
I assure you, 'tron flute is prominent in enough BoC tracks to be "signicantly noticable", and I have never heard it distorted by them. You can hear some processed 'tron violins on "The Campfire Headphase" but buried in the mix on one track. I'm a composer, have owned two Mellotrons though now just use the samples.I love the flute sound as well but will think twice and thrice before using it now, which sucks, IMO.
