Whether you like him or hate him Bill Maher had his own experiences with religion which led him him to making his movie. He is just a rational thinker, all he was saying was "Hey I believe in God but not in Religion because it's a system of bureaucracy between man and God it has to much red tape".
Nice video but I think the topic is a little petty I mean do you really think Bill Maher a professional comedian with his own show and being very successful which he is, is going to go out and make a movie and then hire or try to get a couple of kids to boycott his movie for publicity for him. Yeah Bill is probably sitting back laughing at them because there bringing in publicity for him but I don't think hes directly involved. But I thought it was a great movie with many great points.
these guys werent hired by Bill Maher u idiot! their totally independent youtube users that scoff religion for the bullshit that it is, now go scarf a bucket of fried chicken you fatass!!!
wow i was about to write a comment about his fat, but I thought it would be too mean. I kinda think your right tho, and it seems cruel, but. . . for fucks sake these people don't take care of their bodies! And I think he sort of proved what Bill Maher said on 2:15 because this guy is a complete mron who would believe anything on the "mainstream media", but i call that propaganda
OMG, it's just a movie, you don't have to agree with it. It doesn't make fun of religion, it brings up points in it that weren't completely thought out. dumbass.
I am an atheist but i was disappointed by Religulous. I thought he could have done a much better job of deconstructing religion and how its based on mythology and fiction. But instead he just points out that religious people are crazy. Well DUH! not a persuasive enough argument for most chrisitians/muslims/jews.
The vid he talks about it is hard to take seriously but you make the point for Maher (which did not need to be made). The Evangelicals were not going to see the movie in the first place what is the need for a fake vid?
Also 8:34! Way too long for saying practically nothing.
does it even matter? there are enough real life far right christians to observe out there, ted haggard and what have you, i think the point is that the movie is coming out at all, there has never been able to be a movie like this put out into the pop culture for so many to see. its not like people would need to see these people maher is interviewing in the film to know about the beliefs of fundamental christianity.
You claim that in ancient Greece playwrights payed people to respond in the right way to the show. Can you please provide me with some first hand sources to this as I have never heard of this before. If they are in ancient texts that's ok, my wife is a phd in ancient greek and can translate them. Also can you please explain to me how this correlates to your argument when you actually posit the opposite. Of course these guys you are talking about are comedians and they are satirizing.
If you were born in an Islamic country, you would be Islamic. If you were born 3000 years ago, you would worship Ra. There's plenty of stupid religious people, I'm positive Bill didn't have to hire anyone, there's plenty of idiots that believe this crap. There was nothing written about Jesus during the time of Jesus. Either the bible is true or it's not, it is supposed to be the work of God. You probably learned creationism. You sir, are a complete moron. Good Day.
Ok now that I understand what the hell Zach when he was talking about with "The Rapture Right."
Zach now I'm thinking you're just a dumbass and can't see what's really going on. The Rapture Right is just two stoner kids making fun of religion. Look at their other videos where they protest with the Wesboro Baptist "god hates fags" woman.
The Rapture guy has a sign that says "god hates playa haters." I think Maher could think of something a lot better than this.
Boycotting any film for any reason is stupid in my opinion. Even if Bill Maher did hire those dudes, which I doubt he did, who cares? It's a movie meant to entertain and make one think. It's no more shameful than Spiderman 2 billboards plastered all over Yankee Stadium on opening day. In fact, it's less shameful considered it costs less money and it's a movie that invokes thought rather than retardation which is exactly what Spiderman movies do.
Ok, I just watched the video you're talking about here, and did you notice it said something about an affiliation with "Wesboro Baptist" website? MOST christians THINK it is real! It is a spoof, a parody site; satirical. The video "rapture right" guys is exactly the same kind of thing as the Westboro site. Where, exactly you are getting the silly "Maher hired them" accusation?
I loved Religulous. No one has to hire pretenders to be religious right wingers who wish to squash or sensor. There is more than enough REAL stupid, extreme, crazy nutters out there. It may not be believable to YOU, Zach, but there are .
To Zachsmind: Is there a single shred of evidence to suggest that Bill Maher has hired people to "pretend" to boycott his film, or that he has any relationship whatsoever with theraptureright? If so, let's hear it. If not, then WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU COMPLAINING ABOUT???
Thats all assuming they aren't real picketers. Even so, if they were, I'd still have to say the way you are talking belittles Bill Maher and makes him sound as if he doesnt know what hes doing.
Keep religion out of politics, stop flying planes into buildings, and murdering american doctors, and maybe, MAYBE we wont have to enforce the first amendment of the constitution of the United States.
actually bill maher wouldn't need to ask faith believing people because over 16 percent(roughly 45 million people) believe what he does, thats the target group.
I think you need to boycott McDonalds fatso!... What do you have against free speech? If you don't want to watch it don't, go stick ur head in a hole underground with your thumb up your ass.
I still don't really understand what is being objected to here. I don't think Maher would hire people to mock-protest his movie, and I don't think it would that big a crime if he did. What I think is more likely is that there may have been some people who wanted to mock-protest of their own accord. Or even, that their are some legitimate poeple protesting his movie as it was highly contravesial in the religious communities.
I highly doubt Bill Maher would have hired people to try to organize a boycott against his own film just for attention.
Why do I think this? Because he doesn't need to! Honestly, when you make a film that is that controversial, you don't even have to try to get boycotts, you're going to get them without trying.
And for the record, I highly doubt getting a stronger boycott would bring more attention to his film. If anything it would lead to it getting an even poorer reception than Expelled
Suspicious666: "I noticed you wanted Palin in the White House"
And I noticed you need new glasses and a hearing aid and maybe a new brain while you're at it. I NEVER supported Palin.
If you continue posting lies in here I will delete your comments. That goes for anyone, this point forward, who posts to this thread while obviously not WATCHING AND LISTENING TO THE VIDEO in question first.
I was never for the boycott. The boycott was a stupid, cheap publicity stunt that backfired.
Quite the contrary, DeadlyTab. I have been amazingly generous in not censoring this thread. I have let a lot of stupid comments slide. I haven't been deleting everything I disagree with. However, I'm seriously considering deleting anything said by people who obviously didn't bother to watch and listen to the video in question.
"Youtube's a fucking democracy bitch!!!"
You can't honestly think YT is a decmocracy; you either failed at being funny, or don't even know what the word means.
"I have been amazingly generous in not censoring this thread. I have let a lot of stupid comments slide. I haven't been deleting everything I disagree with."
You should not have to censor to begin with. if you make a video, expect a response. The world does not just conform to you. Maybe the fact that you need to censor should give you a hint to think about what you're trying to say. And, yes, I watched your entire video.
Ohhh yeah he hired all those religious nutjobs to further his atheist agenda...you are a moron. The fact is these people ARE that crazy!!! But keep up your conspiracy theories, pal. Next up: BARACK OBAMA IS GOING TO TAKE AWAY YOUR BIBLES!! Your ignorance astounds me, though it shouldn't, seeing as how people like you have been screwing up our country for years.
Unlike theraptureright videos, I stopped watching yours after 40 seconds.
People come on Youtube mainly to be entertain, and somehow maybe get informed when we want to.
Why would we listen to a man talking to his webcam for 10 mins? Just write a blog, it's quicker...
Anyway, I love the work of theraptureright because even if they make home made movies, they are quite funny and delievers a very simple but true message : Christian extremism is ridiculous!
bill maher is very one dimensional and very stubern person. He has a placement that apears to be very srong in the world. as soon as something drastic happens his position wouldn't even exist. he would have no identity. so who the hell cares what he thinks.
I think the bigger picture is being missed. Regardless of whether or not bill maher actually used these tactics to market this movie, his premise that most organized religions are ridiculously stupid is spot on. Those in this country who have been brainwashed since infancy to believe in a fantastical sky-god without ever applying any critical thought to the dogma attached to it become incredulous when their beliefs crumble under the light of reason. Religion is an obsolete social institution.
I seriously doubt that Maher would hire anyone to pose as religious zealots that are asking for a boycott on his movie. He's smarter than that. I'm sure he knew going in that this movie wasn't going to gross $100 million. He didn't do it for the money, he just loves getting his point across. Same reason you made this video. People with strong opinions on controversial subjects love to be heard. This movie had a $2.5 mil budget and so far had grossed $10.8 mil. I'd say that's a win for Maher.
777zippy777: "This movie had a $2.5 mil budget and so far had grossed $10.8 mil. I'd say that's a win for Maher."
The traveling expenses alone for Bill and the crew woulda been 2.5 million dollars (but think of the frequent flyer miles!). It was beat out by a chihuahua in the box office. I'd say any win they could eke out of this would be an empty one.
To be fair, it will make a killing in disc sales and rentals. I didn't go to the theater but I'll probably buy it on DVD. A lotta people will
Zach...buddy, it's a spoof of boycott, u aware of this? But I gotta give to ya, you ramble on like nobody's business. I was mesmerized just looking at your video. You are very entertaining. Let us move on with your next excursion into the absurd. What do you think of the presidential election?
YES dammit I know it's a spoof of a boycott! My point is that it was a BAD spoof. I got no problem with the movie. I'm a fan of Maher's. I just found the marketing scheme behind the movie an insult to my intelligence.
As for the presidential election, I'm trying unsuccessfully not to think about it.
Did you actually watch my video? I'm not for or against the boycott. I don't give a shit if you boycott or not. The movie crashed and burned anyway. The argument's moot now.
To get other people to go along??? He just said that Bill Maher has paid people to "pretend" to boycott his movie so that people will follow suit and atually boycott his movie... WHAT??? Yeah, as an entertainer he wants his movie to be an absolute flop... I mean who gets in to the entertainment business to make money??? No comedians that I know of... yeah they all want to be dirt poor but its just their bad luck that they are funny! Really is anyone taking this guy seriousy?
you haven't convinced me of anything. religion is a waste of good time, it keeps you blind to the negative things you indulge in, no matter how aware of them they are.
morality is not written in a book, its in human nature. if you have to read for common sense you must read for all knowledge, making you subordinate to another's dictation.
live right and be proud, but don't force religion.. don't boycott as if you're a pro-religion puppet. as if you're helping anything at all.
"morality is not written in a book, its in human nature."
Actually, morality is NOT human nature. Self-preservation is. Tribal community instincts only so much as it adheres to self-preservation. Without religion, mankind would still be scavenging for bug leftovers and running from predators instead of being one.
Theology made Man believe in a Higher Self, which for better or for worse, dragged us kicking and screaming out of the caves. Abandon theology completely, and Mankind will be lost.
How do get the nerve to dispense your religious nonsense over the internet... if you wanna believe in scripture and invisible sky-daddies, stop using tools made through the influence of logic and reason... you have a cowardly scared mind... you are scared to try to understand more... whats ironic is that what makes us human is reason... the religious are mentally closer to the other great apes than the non-religious.
christians decended froms great apes and atheists are gods chosen people! ha
Actually reason and logic are based in a little something called reality, are you familiar?? We have an entire universe of matter and mathematics to prove our point, while you have some absolutely INSANE book that would lead us, if taken literally, to stone gays, along with people who have sex while their partner is menstruating.. But hey thats where you play the whole "its a different time" bullshit. If god is perfect and all knowing, then so should be his word, however, it's far from perfect.
Wrong. I believe in understanding. You believe in someone else doing it all for you. Whats ironic is that my "god"/reason actually grants me wishes. If you pray for a machine that can perform tasks for you, it will certainly not happen. But if I put my mind to it, I can engineer something that you'd deem designed by a supreme being(thanks, i know). In fact it is collective reasoning which gave us a better way of life. People evolve technology by understanding it. Hence, get off our CPU!
exactly... i don't. So believe what you believe, but dont call it god. If you can't help calling it so, at least then admit you're alone in that particular belief. RELIGION IS A SCAM AND YOU ARE A LIAR
And you don't have a clue what I believe. I'm 100% sure you do not understand evolutionary theory or general relativity or anything really important in explaining how things are. We both might be ignorant of eachothers beliefs, but mine are backed up by evidence and reason. Yours are, well?
"because you are ignorant to the truth: science is just another religion. " "science is just another religion."!???? woah.....AFTER such a completely stupid statement, you lose any and all credibility.
religion is blinding. morality tells us what's right and wrong. when you hear the word atheist, you think godless, or lacking morality. that is close-minded.
i'm not an atheist, i have a religion. its intuition, the sense of instinctual nature that is embedded in everyone's DNA. you don't need a book to enforce good nature, just as some christians are pure sinners.
churches are doing a great job, look at everyone dying in war over god.
absolutely false, even IF the bible is true, which it isnt, how the hell did the jews wander the desert for forty years without stealing, killing and cheating etc. Second, why is it that people with no religous belief are just as moral as religious people. Thirdly, it is technology and knowledge/science that have progressed humanity, and if you argue that, you are a blatant liar or a moron. You ever wonder why eve was punished for eating from the tree of "KNOWLEDGE"?? Religion halts progression
riffMaster8686: "why is it that people with no religous belief are just as moral as religious people."
That's not always the case. There are those who claim to be religious but are not moral. There are religious minded people who actually practice what they preach. There are nonreligious people who abide by some moral code (differing resources), and there's blatant amoral assholes who do whatever the fuck they want and screw the world.
That proves nothing. There's no direct correlation.
You might want to work on your people skills, but I'm sure aside from that. you're probably a wonderful, compassionate human being, and a fascinating person with whom anyone would want to have a few beers.
is it out in cinemas? or where have you seen it? Is there a way to download it yet? I'd love to see it. btw. this video is publicity as well lol I wouldnt have known about it if not for clicking this by mistake... :) Thanks bearded guy!! Keep up the good work!
Nothing to be sorry aboout abm0762. I didn't boycott the film. I didn't go see it (yet), but I didn't boycott it.
A friend of mine asked me the other day if I'd ever seen Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ. My answer is no. I already know how it ends. Why would I need to watch two hours of JC getting the crap beat out of Him? Seems rather masochistic to me.
Same here. I know what Bill Maher's saying. Let's just say it's not a high priority.
I bellive that morality and normalcy are nonexistant. Think about we belive somthig is bad becuse were we raisd to belive this vise versa with good. and if you realy think about at the core were no diffrent from animal infact were are animala just far smarter. If there is a one trith than more than likely than truth is survival we as a human race must do as much as we can to survive and thrive. I know my theory is all over the place ive been thinking about this for alongtime like 15 years.
If society were to embrace your 'theory' it'd take maybe three generations before humanity was back to picking fleas and ticks off each other. Morality and normality may be human invented concepts, and I happen to agree that normality is over-rated, but without a set of guidelines to human interaction, anarchy would give way to mob mentality, which would devolve into primitive theologies. Mankind wouldn't leave religion, but embrace it. Forgive me for not subscribing to your point of view.
Believe want you like in the end we all work for money (with minuscule exceptions), and sheep live for grass. Just an analogy, i.e quite broad, but simple and in view true.
I think your reading way too much into it, if u watch a few more of their videos you'll see they not trying to get people to picket, they are just messing around. Watch the one where they are at a rally wearing Hitler-esque uniforms. They are simply poking fun at Christian activists. Maybe Maher's pr department is responsible for some of the things u speak of, but these guys arent part of it I can almost guarantee u that.
For years I have been saying that religion is the root of just about all evil in this world. Bill Maher documented it and for that I thank him. How much human suffering must there be in the name of "my religion is better than yours." If you think about it, our president is really a lot like another religious zealot currently adding to the human suffering in the world. Namely, yup, Osama bin Nutjob. A fundamentalist christian wacko vs. a fundamentalist Muslim wacko, there is NO difference!!!
It's not that cut and dried. Blaming all religion for war and suffering is like saying guns kill people. It's absurd. There are ripe bastards on this planet who are purposefully hiding behind religion to accomplish their own twisted self-serving goals, and there are fools and sheep who follow those expletives into hell, thinking it's a shortcut to heaven.
Those same bastards also hide behind other banners. If religion disappeared today, they'd use something else. Not all religious people suck.
Your right if their end result is to get more publicity for Bill's movie they went too over the top. I saw RELIGULOUS the next friday after opening day with maybe 7 people in attendance. I like Bill he pokes much warranted fun with no solutions. He offers people who choose to call the First Cause of all things God, nothing. He calls us all "ridiculous" because we wish to think of this First Cause in a divine light and then has no answers. Everyone is ridiculous but him who offers again nothing!
I saw the movie too. I think you may have missed the point. Sure, he did poke fun at religion (it is a comedy. -from Maher's mouth not mine) but the point was that we don't have all the answers and shouldn't expect anyone else to. The point wasn't to say that everyone who has faith is stupid or ridiculous.
I guess what I took from the movie is that he thinks that the religion is ridiculous, not the people who believe it.
MGAVBRACE: "thanks for letting me know about this film. cant wait to see it. your doing a good job promoting it.. oops"
Why thank you MgavBrace! That's perhaps the sweetest thing anyone's said to me in this entire thread! Yes, absolutely this was my Liberty Left way of supporting Bill Maher's movie. Thank you for noticing. Had I not wanted to support Religulous, I would have done what ACTUAL Evangelicals did across the country - keep my mouth shut, stay home, and not bother boycotting it.
I could believe they are accurate and I saw it on dvd I loved it but I felt he was too soft but as for ringers he probably let them know so they had the option to let him have it

Tabor13 3 years ago
Ok, I just watched the video you're talking about here, and did you notice it said something about an affiliation with "Wesboro Baptist" website? MOST christians THINK it is real! I still don't really understand what is being objected to here. I don't think Maher would hire people to mock-protest his movie, and I don't think it would that big a crime if he did. What I think is more likely is that there may have been some people who wanted to mock-protest of their own accord. Or even, that their are some legitimate poeple protesting his movie as it was highly contravesial in the religious communities.
marKism69 3 years ago
I highly doubt Bill Maher would have hired people to try to organize a boycott against his own film just for attention.
Why do I think this? Because he doesn't need to! Honestly, when you make a film that is that controversial, you don't even have to try to get boycotts, you're going to get them without trying.
And for the record, I highly doubt getting a stronger boycott would bring more attention to his film. If anything it would lead to it getting an even poorer reception than Expelled

420ALI3N 3 years ago
I think the bigger picture is being missed. Regardless of whether or not bill maher actually used these tactics to market this movie, his premise that most organized religions are ridiculously stupid is spot on. Those in this country who have been brainwashed since infancy to believe in a fantastical sky-god without ever applying any critical thought to the dogma attached to it become incredulous when their beliefs crumble under the light of reason. Religion is an obsolete social institution.
psuguy65 3 years ago
I seriously doubt that Maher would hire anyone to pose as religious zealots that are asking for a boycott on his movie. He's smarter than that. I'm sure he knew going in that this movie wasn't going to gross $100 million. He didn't do it for the money, he just loves getting his point across. Same reason you made this video. People with strong opinions on controversial subjects love to be heard. This movie had a $2.5 mil budget and so far had grossed $10.8 mil. I'd say that's a win for Maher.
777zippy777 3 years ago
777zippy777: "This movie had a $2.5 mil budget and so far had grossed $10.8 mil. I'd say that's a win for Maher."
The traveling expenses alone for Bill and the crew woulda been 2.5 million dollars (but think of the frequent flyer miles!). It was beat out by a chihuahua in the box office. I'd say any win they could eke out of this would be an empty one.
To be fair, it will make a killing in disc sales and rentals. I didn't go to the theater but I'll probably buy it on DVD. A lotta people will

you haven't convinced me of anything. religion is a waste of good time, it keeps you blind to the negative things you indulge in, no matter how aware of them they are.
morality is not written in a book, its in human nature. if you have to read for common sense you must read for all knowledge, making you subordinate to another's dictation.
live right and be proud, but don't force religion.. don't boycott as if you're a pro-religion puppet. as if you're helping anything at all.
spensergavin 3 years ago
"morality is not written in a book, its in human nature."
Actually, morality is NOT human nature. Self-preservation is. Tribal community instincts only so much as it adheres to self-preservation. Without religion, mankind would still be scavenging for bug leftovers and running from predators instead of being one.
Theology made Man believe in a Higher Self, which for better or for worse, dragged us kicking and screaming out of the caves. Abandon theology completely, and Mankind will be lost.

ZachsMind 3 years ago
Actually reason and logic are based in a little something called reality, are you familiar?? But hey thats where you play the whole "its a different time" bullshit. If god is perfect and all knowing, then so should be his word, however, it's far from perfect.

??? You honestly haven't a clue what I do and don't believe, and your assumptions are laughably off base.
ZachsMind 3 years ago

ZachsMind 3 years ago
you're drowning this baby in arsenic bathwater.
religion is blinding. morality tells us what's right and wrong. when you hear the word atheist, you think godless, or lacking morality. that is close-minded.
i'm not an atheist, i have a religion. its intuition, the sense of instinctual nature that is embedded in everyone's DNA. you don't need a book to enforce good nature, just as some christians are pure sinners.
churches are doing a great job, look at everyone dying in war over god.
spensergavin 3 years ago
absolutely false, even IF the bible is true, which it isnt, how the hell did the jews wander the desert for forty years without stealing, killing and cheating etc. Religion halts progression
riffMaster8686 3 years ago
riffMaster8686: "why is it that people with no religous belief are just as moral as religious people."

Yort515 3 years ago
If society were to embrace your 'theory' it'd take maybe three generations before humanity was back to picking fleas and ticks off each other. Morality and normality may be human invented concepts, and I happen to agree that normality is over-rated, but without a set of guidelines to human interaction, anarchy would give way to mob mentality, which would devolve into primitive theologies. Mankind wouldn't leave religion, but embrace it. Forgive me for not subscribing to your point of view.

Maybe Maher's pr department is responsible for some of the things u speak of, but these guys arent part of it I can almost guarantee u that.
funkyfunk69 3 years ago
For years I have been saying that religion is the root of just about all evil in this world. Bill Maher documented it and for that I thank him. How much human suffering must there be in the name of "my religion is better than yours." If you think about it, our president is really a lot like another religious zealot currently adding to the human suffering in the world. Namely, yup, Osama bin Nutjob. A fundamentalist christian wacko vs. a fundamentalist Muslim wacko, there is NO difference!!!
perfectbark 3 years ago 2
