This is an interesting episode but the downside is that the sets on the stage look like the same generic "music video" busted up house everyone else was using their videos at the time. (With awful 'faux black & white".) Marilyn still had it and the dancers were still hot but something was amiss at this point.
Well, it's not her fault. It's not Lachman's fault either. It's those execs at Paramount. I thought Charlie O was a nice touch to the show. He had more announcing experience than Robert W. Morgan (who only had an announcing gig on SG).
That's because Charlie O'Donnell was also American Bandstand's original announcer; he even served well into the show's move from Philadelphia to Los Angeles.
@palmercomm Yeah, but Charlie O was more suited to game shows ("Pyramid" and "Wheel Of Fortune") and "Bandstand" - Robert W. Morgan was a radio DJ, and to me, he will ALWAYS be the most remembered announcer on "Solid Gold!"
I know they did come together last July for a special tribute to TV dance and choreography sponsored by the Emmy's. But I don't think it was televised.
As for Jamilah - I don't know what she is doing as a career now. I know that she is alive and well and in contact with at least 1 other SG dancer. And she wasn't at the "reunion".
I watched most of the 87-88 seasons but didn't like it as much. Sentiments are exactly the same as some of the posters below, most of the dancers lack the sexiness and character of those in earlier seasons
As in the sexiness of the "Lester Wilson" era, I would have to agree that I did not like SG 87 but it did grow on me. Now as in SG88, I could not get it due to not being able to get it on cable. But as in the dancers, the only ones who really showed sex appeal would be Jamilah, Paul, Eilene, and Leslie. I cannot say anything about Andrea or Betsy. I do remember Andrea being a "Love Boat Mermaid" and she was a cutie back then!!!
Thanks for posting I was a pretty faithful viewer fr 1980-1986 but didnt watch after that (caught an episode or 2 of the SG in concert during its final year)
I was under the impression the dancers were not used much during the 86-87 season did they dance to the songs in the countdown like they did during previous seasons ?
Love to see more dance clips fr 86-87 season interesting to see how they changed the sets
I agree zgreggz82. Plus I also hated the fact that the ending was taped only once and then reused at the end of each show. I really liked the old was of doing a new ending every week with that weeks opening number outfit. The focus on the dancers went way off course!
As stated in previous postings about Solid Gold in '87 and '88, the show, pretty much, sucked. One reason was the show's focus change, but the other reason was the choreography. Lester Wilson's choreography wasn't "Solid Gold." It seemed he tried to fill up all of the empty space in the new set with wide lines of movement, dancing the entire song. It made the routines corny, to me. I guess I am trying to say is that the routines weren't funky enough to cut it with the fan base to save the show.
I never did like Solid Gold '87 or '88. Aside from the fact that the dancers danced less and less, I felt that after 1986 the show no longer focused on the dancers like it did from 1980 - 1986.
Thank you. I liked the fact that these dancers would perform the entire song. An extra guy was a good idea and these boys were sexy. I wonder why they only kept Jamilah from the previous season. Leslie was like her predecessors Deborah and Beverly. Have you got these dancers performing 'Bad' and 'When I think Of You' by Michael and Janet Jackson?
Actually, if you look closely, Eileen is in SG '87. So Jamilah & Eileen were the only 2 to make the transition. Sadly Eileen was gone after this season leaving Jamilah the only "old troupe" dancer.
No I don't have those requested performances, but I am always on the look-out for new footage!!
the really grey look really made everyone blend in making the routines look blurry as well.

I didn't hear much of Charlie O in this clip.

What a crap ending. The choreagraphy just sucks. They really ruined a great show.

Only saving factors were Charlie O, McCoo, and possibly Arsenio Hall.

But even Marilyn couldn't save it from the mutant creature the show became.

I've said before and I will say it again. For me, RW Morgan was THE VOICE of Solid Gold. May he rest in peace.

Right on with that comment!

@lbCharmed1 Maybe Charlie O and Robert W are reminiscing about their SG days.

Interesting, do you have any idea which dancers showed up for this tribute and did they actually dance.....

I agree, by this time I had lost interest in the new format, set and dancers. Although there are some great talents in this group of dancers....
