  • So this is why watching porn makes it feel better .

  • His words were huge! Hahaha Thts what's she said ;)

  • what happens if you hit the fake hand with a hammer

  • @mull20641 haha not quite my friend its a sight illusion not a touch illusion. You mean to say if the real hand and fake hand was WACKD... yes it would appear to the brain like the fake hand felt the pain!

  • @mull20641 yes in many of these experiments the hand is stabbed at the end, and many test subjects scream in pain

  • I've seen enough Japanese TV to know where this is going.

  • lol what if the lady stabbed the rubber hand with a knife?, what would she feel?

  • DATA NOOOO

  • The words were wayy too big .......

  • Vsauce ftw !

  • voodoo

  • Where do I get these rubber hands?... Just asking :)

  • This other trick that might be related to this one is this. Have friend put out their finger, then put your finger against theirs to make a pyramid or triangle type shape. Then you or your friend rub the two finger up and down with your index and thumb simultaneously with your free hand. You will feel as if their finger is apart of yours and you will experience a very weird feeling. Try it! It's pretty weird but awesome.

  • I wonder what would happen if she stabbed the rubber hand

  • Vsauce anyone?

  • I am 16 years old and I have just figured this out! Staring at the other rubber hand like a dumbass

  • he sounds like Klauss from family guy! =D

  • It's because most people lack Proprioception in their hands. And if you're too relaxed, the brain plays a trick on you.

  • i dont trust that girl. she could just be stupid

  • amillionmonkeys.blog.com aren't you curious?

  • FUCKING SMASH THE RUBBER HAND..WHAT HAPPEN THEN HUH?!

  • @Nativeboy0 ull get cancer T_T

  • Now time to trick the stripper i like to get lap dance from.

  • just by the accent, i can say this guy is a GERMAN HAHAH

  • Technically I understand this, because as you cannot see your actual hand, and the motion is in the same direction for the real and fake hand, it allows your mind to see the situation unnaturally and think that the hand which is fake is your real hand.

Wow... I should write a book on that stuff...

  • Interesting

  • cool

  • I think that I am naturally predisposed to be of the percentage of people who -would- feel the illusion, although if I deliberately and consciously engaged my critical thinking faculties I may be able to avoid being 'tricked' in this way. Having never tried and being reluctant to do so, I am unsure.

The power of suggestion and expectation really is quite incredible in the ways it can influence the human mind. Sometimes scarily so, especially in hypnosis.

  • @Harkz0r Hypnosis isn't that scary, you can't be hypnotised to do something you really don't want to...

  • @Seiryuu270 That depends on the depth of the trance state and the skill of the hypnotist, though is true in a sense. The fact is, even most hypnotists don't know -exactly- what they're doing, they just know that it works. That one can leave a cue for rapid re-induction as a post hypnotic suggestion is alone enough to deter me from experimenting with hypnosis. It is fascinating, but the concept of allowing others to access mental processes I consciously cannot just doesn't sit well with me.

  • it has NOTHING TO DO with your BRAIN.

  • @adsfdgfhify obviously it has to do with your brain. what else would it have to do with? everything you experience has to do with your brain.

  • I once went through hand surgery to fix some broken fingers and at the end of the procedure, because of the effect of local anesthesics, I started feeling my arm in a different place than where I could see it was. It felt so real, the weirdest sensation!

  • i have done this had this done to me before where at the end a knife was stabbed at the hand

it is a weird experience because you feel like your hand has been struck

  • This was fascinating. So, New Scientist videos used to be good!

  • i know that this will be stupid but... does it work with porn too?

  • Dear everyone, when you see a top rated comment was left a year ago, that person may not wish to continue seeing replies. More often than not, that person has already heard what you are saying. k thnx :)

And I'm not deleting it because I still think it would be funny :)

  • this is an example of tricks that are used to help people with phantom pains.

  • dude, thats soo cool!

  • Theres this trick where you hit the rubber hand with a hammer, then the person freaks out a and gets a bit dizzy

  • @Devonmeister i think that might be because of that thought of 'what if that were a real hand, omg that that would rly hurt' that might make them freak out. it'd be like watching a wax figure being put throuhg a mulcher; i'd feel kind of sick thinking what if that was a real person.

  • "If this visual and tactile information is applied synchronously, and if the visual appearance and position of the dummy hand is similar to one's own hand, then people **MAY** feel that the touches on their own hand are coming from the dummy hand, and even that the dummy hand is, in some way, their own hand"

Psychology should not be compared to the real sciences like physics, biology, chemistry

  • Lame. it only works because she wants it too. Since i thnk psychology is crap i would not fall for that b.s.

  • @CardinalRaker It doesn't matter what *you* think - it's the way your brain works. So, yes, you'd fall for it.

  • @SpiderJon I actually went down to University to see if they had this and they had a setup. Guess what..i didn't work. They said a small percentage don't react to it even when they did the hammer part since that percentage knows it's not their hand.

  • @SpiderJon Psychologist aren't mind readers. Yet people put alot of faith in these people . legislations is sometimes based on their personal ideology and they use their psychology "expertise" to legitimise it. people forgot how Gays were considered a mental disorder by them. John Kennedy's(and others) sister was lobotomised by them, Even if this trick works on most people(didn't on me). it's just a trick. Magicians and Con Man are better at reading and tricking people

  • @SpiderJon I forgot to add in my rant(i despise psychology). The guy said 2/3 would respond well im in the 1/3.

  • would this work with the clitoris too?

  • @crumpetfuzz An important question would thus be... do you have a model clitoris?

  • SCIENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (not really.)

  • "Rubber hand..." ROFL

  • Alien hand!

  • I am highly sure that using an altered version of this techique could make the brain could help prevent rejection of severed body parts. I don't know how to do it though.

  • Oh, and I wonder if it would work if the false hand did not look like a hand but rather say, just some blocks. Or if the hand were a different color/skin tone like black or green.

  • Sure, this makes sense. Whenever I see someone getting a massage on TV, I feel it in my back. I think the key is the prior sensory experience: it gets activated when you see the same stimulus, even if you aren’t actually experiencing it directly.

  • Now if only the last few seconds of this video consisted of a quick knife jab and the woman screaming...

HAHA, JUST KIDDING, I wouldn't do it :)

  • @Yoshi5020 No really. I was wondering if they would poke the plastic hand to see if it elicits a pain response from the subject (sorry, I mean “participant”). I’m sure some of the experiments have, just not in this particular instance.

  • Crazy stuff.

  • the illusion is working only because your actually getting into the hand

  • Also I noted one thing; this illusion stays in subjects mind for couple of minutes. After test they did whatever they wanted, ate sandwhich and watched TV. Then I asked they back and thouched only fake hand. They felt it, but sensation wasn't anymore so strong. Also I hit fake hand and he said ouch, even though he didn't feel any pain. Another person pulled quickly his arm.

  • I tried this, success. I also tried how realistic hand must to be.

I cut cartridge look like hand and then about 5 minutes simulating it had effect. Well, I think effect wasn't so strong as it would have been with realistic-looking rubber hand. And test failed only with one person.

  • lol she doesnt sat "fourth hand" she says "False" hand xD its because of her accent

  • 1:23

"the feeling of having a fourth hand"

    Yeah that must be weWHAAAAAAAAAAAAT

  • @jmerridew124 it's actually false hand...

  • @mexicanita18 "FOURTH hand."

  • i wonder if that would work for your penis..... :O

  • This is just conditioning.

I don't know what this proves other than that.

It's like the phantom arm when someone loses an arm.

    Our minds condition to situations.

  • I like how she said that "It felt like a forth and" she has three already??

  • @VloggSpott I think she said "a FALSE hand belonging to me" with an (british?) accent.

  • @VloggSpott She's saying "false hand" not "forth and" numb nuts

  • I think Error081688 is right!

  • I was waiting for the sledgehammer to come in, it didn't :(

  • Red Faction had one nice sledgehammer , hahaha :D

  • @evilmarc

Me too, looks like i'll have to get a rubber hand and do it myself. -_-

  • i wonder if they would feel the rubber hand getting smashed by a mallet?

  • if i was to believe the couch i was sitting on somehow was a part of my body... and someone came up and punched it, would i feel the pain?

  • @SamUKest89: No. The fake hand doesn't have any nerves in it. Instead, you're localizing your real hand in the space occupied by the fake hand.

If you threaten the face hand suddenly with a knife, or smashed it, the person is very likely to pull their real hand away, even though it's not in any danger.

  • 1:01 after 2 minutes of stroking?

  • @BoStErO1905 Hehe yep. Actually it’s just to create constant stimulation in order to habituate the nerves.

  • The whole universe is one hell of a delusion actually :D

  • The universe is your perception.

    Your perception is your reality.

  • If you live your entire life in a simulation.Like fantasy universes usually are , then everyone who claim that cars and rockets are real , but magic is superstition begins to look like a deluded nerd.Because off course magic is real , you've done that your entire life and in this simulation its far more than just some silly woodoo rituals and new age superstition. For you , orcs are more real than telephones or computers themselves. Here is a deal - fish doesn't know hes in a water.

  • mmm rubber feel good on penis

  • and then hit by a hammer! :D

  • Haha :D lol

  • nice "Hand Job"

  • I wanna try it and then stab it but i'm afraid it might be too traumatic =S

  • there is actually research showing that people have reactions to threats to the rubber hand after the illusion has taken effect

  • I did this in class just now XD

  • they should try this with a pair of rubber balls

  • ROFL

  • ropfl

  • Lmao xDD

  • After they get the feel like it is their hand quickly smash it with a hammer and see if the person pulls their hand away.

  • looks like it feels good

  • STAB IT

  • My thought exactly!!

  • LMAO

  • this is weird i actually felt what they where doing in the video

  • aww shieet im trippin so much balls right now...that was fuckin crazy!

  • im not sure if stabing the hand would work because they get the person to get used to the feeling of that brush first changeing it might not work this is realy interesting though how powerfull the brain is who knows mabe this hole world isnt real mabe its all in our heads

  • look it up, stabing does work.

  • Somehow i feel that my whole body is like the rubber hand illusion :P

  • Get a life dude.

  • everyone is thinking what i was thinking . STAB IT

  • so true

  • that has been done and the subject freaks and thinks it is their hand being stabbed.

  • @Dynamics18 i was thinking hammer

  • @Dynamics18 Bahahaha I was thinking this exactly

  • I think at the end of this they should smash the false hand with a hammer to see how the person reacts.

  • hahaha xD

  • @Error081688 Yeah, lol

  • @Error081688

they've done it, it "hurts" in the way that one feel paints in a dream -- which is more schocking and ephemeral than real pain, but is still a kind of pain.

  • hell yeah :-)

  • @Error081688 LOL

  • @Error081688, Or smash the real hand with a hammer and see if the subject notices.

  • @Error081688 this and more has been done! search google: rubber-hand-illusion hammer -- you should find a psychology today article online.

  • @Error081688: This HAS in fact been done before. The result was that the test-person actually feeled pain in his hand, and screamed out.

  • @Idharae As far as I've seen and heard, they don't feel pain - they might scream out (just due to surprise), but they just get a strange feeling when something like a hammer comes down.

  • @Error081688 I commented this just because of your more recent comment :)

  • @Error081688 The Rubber Hand Illusion - Horizon: Is Seeing Believing? - BBC Two - search this and you will see it happen !

  • okay i meant to say,

i believe it so that SHITGRAY person

    | down there, can go suck his momma (:

    V

  • i believe it so SHITGRAY and suck it ;)

  • i'd rather see the whole experiment including beating the fake hand with hammer :))

  • Imagine the girl suddenly taking out a knife and stabbing the rubber hand... I would pay to see the reaction.

  • ME too!!!

  • yeah, thats why i searched for this damn illusion, i just saw a picture describing different illusions, and one of them said if you stabbed the hand the person would be like "WTF!?"

  • hehe lolz i was thinking the same:p

  • @Dark3x Man, that would be so interesting to see the reaction, too bad theres no footage of that!

  • @Dark3x i thought the exact same thing. she wouldnt be smiling in amazement id tell you that.

  • what would happen if you chopped the fake one in half after the stroking, would you feel it?

  • @netiaz They should have a girl blow the fake one..

  • I love how you get on your high horse now, thinking you have some sort of divine truth here. But all I can see here is delusional delusional delusional.

How about you dream about a new planet popping up in our solar system, nearby, one habitable for us? How odd, that would never truly come into existence then. Maybe because a dream is merely an EXPERIENCE, its contents are not real, only your perception.

This quote shows it best: "Reality is that what remains when you stop believing in it."

  • Funny I thought about this a little while ago, and now I saw this and I want to try it!

  • hahahaha i'd like to stroke not my hand on this way hahahaha lol to prove it.hahahahahaha

  • i was so not listening to this guy... =/

  • me too...

bcause i am focusing to the title

  • if she kinda "belive" that the fake hand was her own hand after a while, I would love to see the guy smashing the fake hand and see if she would have reacted. like pulling her arm away or something :p

  • id like to try this sometime. it would be interesting. where do they do this kind of thing?

  • the mind is a powerful thing, dont let it go to waste watching youtube rofl

  • How do we know thats real!?!?

  • Try it.

  • Good question! That's quite an inquisitive mind you got, therefore I would suggest you satisfy your minds curiosity and have yourself a little experiment, have a friend over an try out!

I would also suggest trying this out during a party, inquisitive minds dig this!

  • wats gonna be next? a rubber dick?

  • roflcopter

  • good one

  • LOL! when I first read this I thought you said rubber duck :o

  • all this talk about hands, stroking, stimulating, fake, felt, is making me want to...you know...eat some more pork rinds

  • lmao!!

  • at 1:47 her hand looks pretty much the exact same

  • she has nice hands

  • ok now in english

  • Maybe the whole world is illusion , in this case my whole body is some rubber hand illusion ? :D -no wait , world is illusion.

  • WTF??

  • what a croc!!!

  • Besides, still calling it 'creating reality', when you're in fact not doing so, can also be misused by those annoying New Age people who like to claim all sorts of things with wishful thinking. Therefor I think it's more correct to use terms that reflect more what you're getting at: experiences, and people acting as if something is real, even when it's not.

  • Our experience is fundamental to ourselves, it shapes who we are in many ways. This, however, does not validate your use of the word 'reality'. If I see an alien then that alien doesn't necessarily exist in reality. Therefore, what you observe is not equal to reality. That you still act as if it was real is merely the effect of people's experience/belief. It is not the same as 'creating reality'.

Dreaming is also not creating reality, since what I dream is often not real.

  • No one cares.

  • You can't spell for shit. Druggies: 1 You: 0

  • SANHEDRIN666, your an idiot, just shut up.

  • Hahahaha, I made some kid mad with an offhand comment. Thank you, you just made my day.

  • I have no clue wat the FUCK quelorepario is talking about...no offence

  • You don't? It is quite simple. Quelorepario is saying that a person who have been previously hypnotized is easier to hypnotize again, as the consciousness gets used to it and the "wall" between the consciousness and the subconsciousness gets thinner. If it is thin enough the person can be put in trance even against will unless the subconsciousness inflicts. Prophylactic comes from the Greek word for "an advance guard". A prophylactic hypnosis is done to prevent something, like unwanted trance.

  • I wonder if this could be used as torturing method without leaving any physical traces of it.

Might someone get in a psychotic state after the abuse of it or the mind would finally realize that the pain neurons in the hand is not storming signals of pain? Or would it become a psychosomatic experience so hard that the mind will believe it is receiving it disregarding the real lack of signals?

The next question brings me to the Matrix, if your brain believes you are dead, would you die?
