Everyone that is calling gypsy derogatory and saying to use 'Romani' instead, are completely erasing the identities of the original "gypsies." The nomadic people of India. They are not Romani. Romani are the White/European nomadic people. If you want to be PC, find a term to include all the nomadic people, or better yet use the names the people call themselves.

Languages drift and change over time. For example, all polynesian languages have a common ancestor though they are mutually unintelligible. Similalry, most Euopean languages originate in an Indo-European language thousands of years ago. The gypsy languages in the west are descended from Punjabi, an Indian language, though Romany and Punjabi sound very different. The Indian Punjab is where all gypsies originated.

Look at history. Gypsies originated from India. Look within India, how different are we from North to South. They moved, adapted and changed over a period of time. One time I talked on the phone to a family, initially I thought may an Indian immigrant then to find out they were gypsy. I did lot of reading after that.
