Johnny was never going back to TV. While NBC pushed him out (with a nudge from kushnick), johnny was tired of it. He had many, many guests hosts the last several years so he could vacation. Plus, he wasn't timely anymore. He's wonderful and looking back- what a talent. But at that time in the
Then why compare them to each other? They're different men doing different acts in different eras. I seriously doubt Jimmy Fallon would compare himself in any way, shape or form to Carson.
From everyone who knew him, Johnny looked and sounded good from the time he left the Tonight Show to 1999. He kept very busy traveling - he once spent 3 months on an African sightseeing safari - and overseeing production of his home videos. But in 1999 Johnny had to have triple bypass surgery and that's when his emphysema was discovered. He went downhill from then to his death in early 2005.
You can here Johnny's emphysema in his voice back then which sadly took his life. Maybe that is the reason he never returned to TV deu to his health and also he was a very private person who would not want anyone to hear that in hsi voice as it got worse.
Thank you so much for posting this video! I didn't even know that after the end of his Tonight Show run, Johnny ever gave another monologue in public. This is really a treasure. And I ask myself: If he did this for Bob Hope and was still so sharp and witty after a pause of one year, why didn't he do it more often? Why was he so strict (after his very final TV appearance in 1994 at Letterman) in keeping himself away from the spotlight?
@Great2C Johnny had a "program development" contract with NBC after he left the Tonight Show. One of the terms was that if Johnny ever again appeared on TV again it would have to be on NBC (or with NBC's permission). NBC was not pleased when Johnny made two brief non-speaking cameos on David Letterman's CBS show and warned him not to do it again. Johnny quite willingly signed this contract as it basically paid him millions of dollars per year to do nothing.
@MegaObserver1 Yeah that is true. People always say Johnny's post Tonight Show silence was because he was so classy, yes he was a class act, I don't think he would have taken another late night talk show run but he would have likely done more public apperances if that contract wasn't there. It's why he never said a word on that brief Letterman apperance. Plus I think Carson just hated NBC after the late night wars debacle, so why would he bother going on their network.
