Possums are actually some of the most docile creatures. It's no coincidence that their main defense is playing dead. I know you're releasing one so this comment isn't directed at you but I wish people would just leave them the 'F' alone.

Opossums are bluffers. I caught two in one trap yesterday and I reached right in and carefully grabbed it by the tail and released it. If you have a little bit of confidence and remain calm, the animal can sense that. I wouldn't try it with a raccoon though.
