Finally I had to re-lay the bark on the lid to cover damage and other work so I layered bark on it after smothering it with wood glue. I held the bark down with pins until it all dried.
The hardest part was carrying it to the location without being seen :)
I chainsawed the top off the log, did the same to another part of the same log to make a decent fitting lid, and then used one of those drill bits that makes a 1 inch hole - dozens of times. Then a simple hammer and chisel job to neaten it up a little.
Couple of hinges and a door latch with the handle mechanism sticking though another hole.
Unfortunately the moss and the mould all died so it now looks the same as when I made it, albeit a little more weathered.
