What malfunction was this? I'm new to skydiving (on AFF level 5). This, to me, looks like line twist. Why did you initiate emergency procedures instead of kicking out?
I am NOT criticizing your choice to cutaway, I'm just trying to learn.
i may be wrong, but it looks to me like a spinning linetwist, and one of those its better to cut away because you're loosing altitude much more quickly than a standard line twist. you wouldn't have time to kick it out.
@bqmassey the first looks like spinning linetwist with cutaway + RSL activated reserve, I guess wingsuit jumps are very difficult for kicking out of linetwists...
another one looks as the same problem (while opening main - left side stay collapsed and start spin too) without RSL assisted reserve opening (i guess)
probably because hes jumping a highly loaded canopy with about 4-5 line twists AND hes spinning. when you start jumping these kind of canopies (if you ever do) you will see that kicking out of linetwists is very dificult sometimes, add a wingsuit = cutaway 99% of the time.
did you figure out the reason for the malfunction -- a problem with the packing or the canopy? If I had a mal I would be tempted to bin the canopy and purchase a new one by any means. It sounds scary that both you and the video poster here had malfunctions on the same rig one day after the other. It sounds to me like *more* than coincidence when a rig fails *twice in a row* : )
You don't skydive, do you? Parachutes do malfunction just as engines in planes do. That is why you learn emergency procedures.
On myfirst cutaway it was my error in packing and coice of skydive equipment. I tested a differnet brake setting and should not have jumped a wingsuit on that jump.
On the second one it was a combination of a very minor malfunction combination (knot in brake line), unfamiliar gear and very turbulent thermals that made me decide not to land that configuration.
I'm about to do AFF, trying to learn some stuff before I go. Your explanation sounds fair enough, so coincidence only.
But I would I be right to guess the first mal cutaway gave you more confidence to do the second cutaway the next time, right?
In this video here though it looks like the guy is using the same one twice, and it looks like the same problem recurring. I wonder what his reasoning was, perhaps he thought the first mal was a packing problem. All hypotheticals I know but interesting.
the second one looked horrible D:

Why he is not choosing to kick out of any of these is because of altitude.
Gustaf69 2 years ago
@Gustaf69 I believe these cutaways were due to the spin... can't kick out of line twists when you're spinning horizontal to the ground. ;-)

what size is your main? seems too small for wing suiting.

Do you have a Skyhook on that rig?

Hey partner! I did the same: My first and 2nd reserve one day after the other and only one jump between them. ;)
Enjoy the sky!

freifallspoiler, were you also using the same malfunctioned chute the next day??
dmc3 2 years ago
No, my system was at the rigger's the next day. But I would have if it could have been repacked quicker, no problem!
I did about 100 jumps on it later.
