The unfortunate little fact that POPE Joseph Ratzinger joined the Hitler Youth has been the subject of a widely observed moratorium. I’ve respected it myself, hitherto. But after the Pope’s outrageous speech in Edinburgh, blaming atheism for Hitler, one can’t help feeling that the gloves are off. Did you hear what he said?
"Should Pope Benedict XVI be held responsible for the escalating scandals over clerical sexual abuse in Europe?" Yes he should, and it's going to escalate a lot further, as more and more victims break through the guilt of their childhood indoctrination and come forward.
Not to forget also that Catholic priest Matthew Fox warned us that Pope Ratzinger (what a name!!) was good friends anad confident to Adolf Hitler literally and the purple robed preists of the vatican and major catholic churches turned in tens of thousands of parishoners to the Germans for rewards . The vatican bank is 2nd largest in the world if not THE largest bank and all hidden secret.. The payments to victims of priests in one district in california alone was 5 billion..
It's about the hypocrisy of Priests & Judges who themselves are imperfect & not worthy or righteous in judging their fellow man, about hierarchy of authority...., that man is unfit to cast judgement on other men.... thats my take on it anyhow..
I wonder if the catholic church or the church of england was taken a hit from Townsend on this? Right now I am upset with some folks at my evanjelical church and this song is like a release for me.
I think it is a dig at orgainized religion, perhaps the catholic church? Yes those who falsely accused Townsend a few years ago. Personally, I can relate to this song to some other religions. Right now I am a little upset with my church, namely a few individuals there. Hitting a burn out stage. Christ is my savior YES!! But the humans bring me down.
GREAT!!! The Who have broke through even more boundries, to bad radio is still playing 80's Aerosmith like it matters. Is this about religion? No. Anti-Religion really. God made man and man made religion. All God want's is a true faith in Him and His Son Jesus. everything else is man made. Don't beleive me, Don't Know, do what Pete did and pray about it. "Preachin' from my chair"
I think this the kind of music Pete might have made without the who coming into existence. He would have been well received but poor folk singer type, especially without Roger, I name the duo Semen(after all The Who are regarded as a seminal band) Gurfunkle
I absolutely love this song and hadn't seen a live version yet, so thanks for posting this. I love the defiance in it ... 'how dare you, do you think I'll quietly go?' ... and the slight tongue-in-cheekness of it despite all the anger that's there too. Gold.
for alot of the tour roger sounded good. towards the end his voice got rough, mainly from being sick, but you can imagine it happens if youre in your 60's
I was at this show, had a bunch of teenagers to my left, and a bunch of folks who were there in the who's prime on my right, cool that the older generation got into this and 'Wire and Glass' before the classics came on again. This song is about Jesus, it's also about the people who used the unfounded allegations against Townshend for political gain. I discovered the Who in 1984, and this, in my opinion, is among their top 10 greatest
Agree, niveks. It's Jesus condemning the Sanhedrin ("you are much braver than you know/for I can't die") and Townshend is drawing a subtle parallel with the way he was treated in early 2003.
Townshend quote, "It is not so much a rail against the principles of justice through the ages, but a challenge to the vanity of the men who need to put on some kind of ridiculous outfit in order to pass sentence on one of their peers. It is the idea that men need dress up in order to represent God that appalls me. If I wanted to be as insane as to attempt to represent God I'd just go ahead and do it, I wouldn't dress up like a drag-queen."
Google Richard Dawkins Foundation and type seach for
"An Audience with the Pope" to really get an idea how perverse the pope is
400 years after Galileo's inquisition they (forgive him) the crimes of priests cannot be covered by accusing others like Peter T.

Pete does Dylan: what a great song!

I originally thought that this song was a protest song against terrorism / Bin Ladin.
But it was a response to seeing the film the Passion of Christ.

Probably the best song on Endless Wire. If you really listen to it you realize how much truth is in the song.

I was there too, it was pretty awesome, to see that Daltrey still was a powerful singer and that Townshend could still rock.

@niveks74 It's got nothing to do with Jesus. It's obviously about those who hypocritically claim to represent him.

@niveks74 it seems to be about the pope not Jesus- It is about Hippocrates.People who do horrible things, yet, tell us what is right and wrong-
