actually Axolotls can't be found on Mexico's gulf, they are from a lake located on Xochimilco (near Mexico's City, at the south almost out of it), specially on the lake or (if you want to see them) on the aquarium (there you can learn lots about it) study them, they are really fascinating creatures, they can regenerate allmost any severed limb (amongo much other amazing stuff)
