I was blown away by this entire movie/soundtrack! The ending was one of the most beautiful and gut-wrencking I have ever seen. Once again Danny Boyle creates a masterpiece regarding the human condition in extreme circumstances. Thanks
“Imagination is more important than knowledge..." - Einstein
I feel the above quote (cut short) explains why people loved or hated certain aspects of this movie. I loved this movie. Sure, there are parts that defy logic and physics but so what? This is a science fiction film, not a science documentary. This film is filled with imagination. Personally, I perceived that he died instantly and the slow-motion part is a "life flashing before your eyes" moment, like embracing the moment in death.
Best scfi hands down. Everyone is right, this movie did not get near the recognition it should have. The only part I didn't appreciate is the "bad guy" near the end. That part seemed a little out of the way for me, but other than that, I highly recommend this movie
it is so good that i know i'm not the only one who loves this film. Most people i know have never seen it,but it truly is so moving. Every time i watch this i cry,we are made of stardust we are beautiful like the sun. And Sol is only one of the almost infinite stars in our universe. I lose myself in images from the Hubble telescope. It truly is wonderful to live in this age of discovery.....
Great movie. Their payload was a stellar bomb that was going to cause a chain reaction and reignite the sun. Why do people have such difficulty with that?
look, nobody knows what exactly happens in the middle of the sun, so saying things like "ooh he broke the laws of physics.." ..says who!! there are lots of laws of physics we don't know about yet, and the perception of a human being whilst inside a giant star is entirely open to speculation.
An interesting interpretation of the movie end came to my mind. The song "To Heal" from Underworld is slightly modified and called "Capa meets the sun" here. It is of course non-scientific and a personalization of the sun at large, but Capa is the 1st human to basically touch the sun. In a sense, it is the sun that stops time and meets one of its children. And THAT encounter may lead to the sun raising activity. Not the puny nuclear reaction the human has brought with him.
@JCdenton50 On the commentary Danny Boyle said the the forces from the sun's gravity warped time and made the last billionth of a second a lot longer from Capa's perspective.
I love the symbolism. As the bomb detonates, Capa is standing on the balance of science and nature; and he's kind of seeing God for the first time. Such a beautifully well-made movie.
@Otochiro1 He doesn't die, he gets stuck in the middle of nothing, time doesn't pass by, he doesn't die as there is no time. He's just there for all eternity.
It was September 17th, 2056. I was turning 60 years old, the last time I saw the sun I was only in my mid 20s. I was 24 when I last saw our beloved sun and I was just joining the Air Force to become an Airman. I would go on to serve for 10 years and leave as a Master Sergeant. I would finish a Graphics Design degree at the University of Florida. I had three wonderful kids who never saw the sun, or an honest summer day. This was the greatest birthday gift of my life. I cried. - from a fanfiction
@FallenAndRised there is a commentary in the DVD by an astrophysicist from the University of Manchester who explains very well the physics in the movie
I don't understand why the explosion stops right before Capa instead of just going right through him. Isn't that a little too convenient. Don't get me wrong, its beautiful regardless, but im just curious.
@mooneclipse2010 Near the beginning of the movie they were talking about how the gravity from the sun would distort time, so you can only assume that is what is happening to Capa
I really liked the movie but I don't buy the premises. The energy output and sheer size of the sun relative to Earth is so absolutely massive most people have trouble grasping it. An atomic bomb on the scale the movie portrays would be like setting off a firecracker. In other words, if you were to watch the sun from a distance as the explosion occurred you wouldn't even know it happened.
@Son37Lumiere it wasnt the explosion you see, but the sun recharged
more wierdly a bomb that if the sun were a football would only be the size of a spec of dust, and thats supposed to recharge it, then again that fucker has been burning for millions of years i think if humanity had that much hydrogen in a pump station we'd have rann out after a millenium
I'm always interpreted this scene in a metaphorically. What we see isn't literally happening in the world of the film, it's more of a way for the film maker to show us something with symbolism etc. The movie has an overall theme about religion/atheism. One interpretation of this scene is capa coming face to face with his creator/god, As a man of science, Capa understands man just comes from stardust. ie his creator is a star/sun.
@Jokker88 you do understand, that there is only one God? God means supreme master of everything, the strongest one, etc... Sun is not God, because we have many Sun's. Sun is creation of God.
the movie was to make us believe Sun is God, making us to accept paganism-pagans worshiped Sun as their deity. The symbology is simple-Earth is dying, and Sun can help her-World is dying, ''god'' can help us-I think movie has something to do with the future, but don't know how...
I'm guessing that the sheer size of the explosion created some sort of distortion in space-time? Whatever, I'm not good with these things, just such a wonderful and unexpected way to end it - that fade-out shot of Capa holding his arm up and smiling. One thing I don't understand though is how exactly she knows that it's 'time'. Maybe I missed something.
im not saying this movie should have never comed out but if boyle would have never camed with the idea of doing this 28 months later would have been out sooner
This scene still affects me as deeply as it did the first time. Capa has come so far, faces his ultimate fear, is beyond all hope of rescue, and it is *beautiful*.
This movie, can only be described with one word: BEAUTIFUL! Go capa! Absolutely beautiful movie, and performance by Cillian Murphy! Best movie ever, period!
I view Sunshine as good ending towards the movie Ice which shows the Earth's Sun dying and the Earth Freezing. If you watch the Movie Ice you get depressed that the Earth is going to freeze but after you watch Ice you watch the movie Sunshine which shows humans doing something about it.
This scene is fucking incredible! Really shows the beauty of the human spirit....even though Capa knows he's going to die...he's never been anywhere as beautiful and gives one final smile as his destiny has arrived. Boyle and Garland are both geniuses.
@MovieMaster0001 It seems ironic that in the end, the character believed in God, but Cillian Murphy claimed he went from agnosticism to atheism while making the film.
The shot at 2:00 looks like a "science-meets-nature" kind if thing. The way I interpret the ending is that Capa, who previously said he doesn't believe in God, rediscovers his faith as he gravitates toward the side of nature. I believe the entire film is a metaphor for a renewal of faith from those who distort it, to its principled core. And having faith makes our world a whole lot brighter.
@MovieMaster0001 I think you've got the wrong of the stick there my friend, Danny Boyle never stated that was his intention. And while sometimes faith may make things brighter, sadly a lot of the time it brings hurt and destruction :(
been thinking bout this scene. earlier in the movie they state the gravity from the sun would increase volocity and distort time on desent..........so i assume capa views the bomb explode in this distorted time frame, hence we get to see the detonation sequence. some directors would of put a fuck off explosion and then cut to people cheering on earth. danny boyle wound the film up perfectly.
@nicmafia But that would mean time would be distorted for him too. Humans can't act independent from time. And the wall of fire would have burned him long before it reaches his face. This scene was made just for artistic reasons and that's okay. This is not a documentary so who cares about physics except some butthurt scientists.
@TrickyEmu - “Theory of Relativity.” states time is relative to ones perspective. he is travelling at great speed. time is slow to him, the sun is not travelling at this speed so is normal, so he is independant from time as we would imagine it. as time slowed and the hull of the bomb was breached by the sun, the light would of hit him before the heat, hence the scene as it played out. the point is, its the attention to detail which makes this a good film imo.
@nicmafia Relativity says that things make sense locally for any observer in any frame of reference - the speed of light is always 'c', causes always precede effects - but distant observers in other frames might see things differently. In the context of the film, the people back on Earth - and us, watching the film - are distant observers... so this scene's timeless moment stretches out for us, but not for Capa... a bit of poetic license that is quite fitting for such a poetic moment.
