@shanepinfist I saw Link in Helsinki 1997. Couldn´t take my son with me ´cos he was just a baby (born in the same year). But now he´s 14 and likes to play Rumble with his guitar...
So awesome, raw and raunchy. Link is the shit. The only artist to ever have an instrumental banned from the radio for being too obscene...lol, long live Link Wray and this badass music
I saw Link Wray a couple of years before he died. He played at Little Five points in Atlanta, Ga. He was in his 70's He could still make his guitar smoke. I remember Rumble when it came out and was a hit in the late 1950's Link had bad memory problems and repeated the same story several times in his performance. He put on a great show. respectfully old -ED
@highschoolmusical841 Ok maybe I didn't use the best choice of words. but still the bluesy rock 60's? esque sound gives his playing a "I hang out in Back Alleys" kind of feel. mind you I play a little guitar myself. (not that good) But it puts someone like Link Rays abilities in perspective for me.
Link Wray's style evolved around that great hit of his called 'Rumble'. There certainly are overtones here. I read once that Link Wray got that distorted guitar sound either by driving a pencil through the amp speaker, or shredding it with a razor. Can anyone elaborate on that?
@aurlis2012 Indeed, Link was one of the greatest that ever was. Without argument, one of a literal handful of men who shaped rock. Some have even said that it was pretty much between him and Chuck Berry. So glad that I got to see Link play before he passed.
To hell with the hall, Link is too damned cool to be enshrined next to the likes of Michael Jackson and Billy Joel... Id hate for his legacy to be commercialized. Hes a legend to the ones who know who theyre talking about, and that a bigger honor than any stupid hall of fame run by those-who-dig-pop-doo-wap. Let Elvis have his trendy-ass wanna-be audience & fame, hopefully his fans stay away from the shows and scene Wray, Perkins & Burnette fans inhabit.
I used to make .22cal short zip guns from broken off car aerials. No Link Wray in the R&R Hall of popularity is a travesty. They have some real questionable people in that club, but the ones not in it piss me of more that those who did make it in. I would trade Link For Sweet Baby James any day, as well as several other slugs.
@youhavegeniusshins i meant its rare finding a good joint in america with music like this always on instead of the fuckin bullshit you hear all the time once the radio is on
saint clair shores , jefferson beach's midway rock and rumbled every weekend in the late 1950s , yea -right im 68 and still the baddest dude wlkin the midway
Music To Slouch & Loiter To. Those asshats at The "Rock And Roll" (?!) Hall Of Fame have James Taylor in there, and no Link?!? They need a visit from a bunch of hoods with broken-off car aerials.
