Actualy, those SD40Ms were not rebuilt from SP units, they were originaly from several different railroads.

13 years after the SP merged, original locos still roam the country. 39 years after the BN merger and 14 years after the BNSF merger, there are still GN, NP, and CB&Q cars across the country. Its amazing what still survives on railroads today.

When UP and SP merged, SP management assumed control of the new company, and took the Union Pacific name. They should have kept Southern Pacific instead.
