Anarchy41, class? What has the mention of Grammar Schools to do with class? It depended upon the passing of "the scholarship" at the age of 11, in the days when children didn't need counselling when faced with an "exam".
Deliciously evocative Betjeman is such a catalyst for a certain area of memory reserved for a certain range of English person. As a Grammar School boy born in 1948 I am lucky enough to be in the range. One can almost taste the Horlicks and the lemon curd.
Yes indeed. I was a Grammar School boy in the early and mid '50s and tie into all that nostalgia. England was a different country then. Now we are not even allowed to describe ourselves as English. British? Pah!!!
I had a secondry school education.......am I not allowed to understand poetry?? Poetry is in the blood.....please dont diagnose it by class. Oh and by the way, I am a published poet! With just CSE's...shock horror!!!
This is how we all talk in Leamington Spa. Even when we order a take away..... Class or not, but we give away our true class when we add ketchup to the order. Keep up the good work my friend.
