  • @BlackTuezday Hey Boon Doc, Do you EQ your drums? I know many producers do it and I dont really know where to start. I've heard people talking about truncating there drums or other terms that im not really familiar with. Is ther anyway you could make a video with some tips? btw i loved the first episode of your documentary.

  • @RAAB0601 truncating is basically cutting the beginning and ending of a sound. done mostly when loading sounds or sampling into drum machines. as for me I do eq my drums just so they won't sound to muttered or closed. it sometimes sounds like jumble.

  • truth.

  • The beat playing while ur talking about whether to quantize is str8 ridiculously dope!

  • banyak cakap

  • i never pressed quantize in my life

  • Elaquent - The love Boon What do you think about Elequents quantization. i think that almost seemingly offness is his vibe. If you have that kind of ear though.

  • would u recommend an MPC or the NativeInstruments 'Maschine'??

  • @ineffect781 i would say the maschine but if you want a full hybrid of hardware and software i would the beat thang i have been looking at videos of that and i wish i would have saved up a little more cash for it instead of maschine

  • I feel like huge di*$@ but I don't know what quantize is, can anybody tell me?

  • Hey G iWas Wonderin If You'd Be Down To Produce For Me?

  • I also make sure to tune the resonance of the kick snare, high hat, and other percussion to the key of the song, if there is one.

  • dopest video out there

  • 9:19 seconds of Real Shit

  • Great Vid, Bruh! Good insight and Enjoyable to watch.

  • Dude knows wat he's talkin bout lol but check out dis beat i been workin on plz ill send u da beat if ur interested /watch?v=cWP-NSNZC_k

  • Your going to heaven based on this video alone. Great teaching.

  • Def agree what is said here. I never use quantize

  • You're inspiring bro, from your attitude to how your teaching. Thanks for the lessons!

  • fuck man, since getting a mpc1000, you are basically my go-to guy for tutorials, plus evrry time i watch a vid, its got some DOPE ASS BOONIE beat behind it.

  • boon!! when are you using the maschine????

  • 7:55 Dat BOUNCE... UNH LOL supa funny

  • what does quantize mean?

  • i like you you're real!

  • great vid, but putting 16th note swing on an 1/8th note sequence like this beat doesn't have any effect? the 'bouncy' notes aren't being played...

  • @muckleby scratch that the ghost kicks are swung like a mf! excuse my waffle and keep up the good work.

  • i need to hear that iam haveing music problems and girl i looked at all your videos never seen this keep ya thing never stop pushing where you wana be

  • Hey Boonie i would love to hear you sample some frank sinatra for a track :D Love that oldish sound :)

  • what age did u start

  • Yo, this is dope! Your boy is mad inspired now. Aye check out my channel and give me feedback on my music. Subscribers can win free beats.

  • Illuminati my ass. They can't take my music from me. You guys should check me out. I've got some pretty nice stuff on my channel.

  • man I feel your video a lot thanks for the ideas and the input

  • nice video and yeah I agree you gotta vibe while laying it down. if your staying overly stagnant during programing it will show a roboticnes to your beat.

also it's good to have an understanding of when to push notes backwards and forwards and how that pertains to rushing or laying back a beat.

    great video

  • this is prob the best vid on youtube, you understand music and you feel it, great stuff, keep it up

  • Boonie how can I get a few tracks form you for my next project.

  • your music should move you if you want to be a good producer. the ones who laugh

and make fun are still learning.. keep it up young blood..

  • i agree with everything he said.

  • i feel you on the body motions boondoc. lol that shit jus helps alot more then ppl think. its like youre almost a part of the beat itself...plus you get the feel of the beat and how you want those drums to bump when you get into it physically...its all about ya soul ya'll..even if you look like you havin full body convulsions,,ya beat is gon sound hot lol..good tips on the drum programing doc..you need to put out one on sampling..keep it hiphop fam...1

  • Im glad you explained it the way you did because so people realy have no concept of setting the resolution when you program

  • You're straight up the best producer on Youtube. Glad I found you early so I can be like "I knew that fool way early" when true Hip Hop finally returns to the spotlight. I kind of have a personal question though. It's safe to say that the music you create isn't the "hottest" and most "desirable" shit that's in right now (Club, mainstream garbage, etc.), so how do you get by? Do you do the music for a living or do you gotta work a real job that's supplementing it?

  • @Ryz0n89 The only reason I ask is because you talked about when you first got started in 03, so you've been in this for a while. I'm kind of in the same situation, I'm 21 bout to graduate college and really wanna put my all into this shit, but I gotta get a job you know? I know in this industry shit can take a while to get started but I'm just unsure of how I should approach it. You're a straight-up inspiration though, glad you have so many videos! lol

  • I just read that you stopped using the mpc. C'mon son. That was your lane. How about doing both?. Nobody wants to hear that smooth shyt all the time. That whole Phlliy, J Dilla, Jill Scott, Dwele, Bilal sound is hot but we still want the real vinyl too.I aint trying to diss you I'm just expressing my opinion like fans do.You got fans from the East Coast too like myself who like it shitty gritty.Dont forget about us fam. We need that fix too.

  • Your genuineness comes thru the screen bruh. You appear to be a good natured natured, down to earth dude. I'd put you and Jdepina up against the industry's best when it comes to them MPC skills anytime. I thought an independent label like Stonesthrow would have holla'd at you by now. The internet is full of hidden gems like yourself. Keep up the good work . Real Hip Hop heads appreciate it.

  • shit i have no clue how to quantize...i try but havent really dove into it yet...i just go from my own swing

  • yo i was pissed off when just blaze and premier chose you in the battle. i wanted to see you battle 14kt. It would have been so epic. Anyway, i got your video on my facebook fam. can't wait till next year bro hope im in the redbullbigtune again.

  • Sully Erna and Shannon Larkin check em out...

  • yo boonie professionally speaking, what do you do to earn cake? i know most producers have that side hustle... that 9-5. im just dying to know what you exactly do for your night job so to speak. just trying to build a basis for my producing life aswell

  • "Everybody's Soul Has Its Own Rhythm" - BOON DOC

    You're a true inspiration man

  • yea my beats on my channel not quantized, check m for exam

ple,i just go along wit the sample

  • the swing is the thing i wana lern more about...its so true what boonie is sayin about not alot of people can hear it....id make beats with my friends and id always say it hasnt got that feel im looking for, they would look at me like im mad lol, so now i do it with the quantize off to get that phantom beat and loos hi hat...but i wana know how the swing works because i want the mpc to do it for me damn it lol, but for real tho, if you could elaborate more on how the % works id be realy grateful

  • yo boonie!! feelin' it like always!

question i hope you can answer: how do you filter samples to take away the drums in it and still make it sound so full! i dont have a MPC for information, i use ableton live 7 with a MPD and the same keyboard that you have!

oh and the song that i uploaded, thats swissgerman... i live in switzerland -.-, was born in south africa tho... HOLLA BOOONIE

  • Comment removed

  • Oh, he said Flying Lotus. You just won the "Educated in Hip Hop Award of the Day" lol

  • the last 60 seconds explains why black people have the best rhythm

  • lol I'm not a dancer but I totally know what you mean about movin ur body and stuff to help with producin haha

  • Hey Boonie hows it going?

I have a quick question. During the times that you dont quantize do you still feel the need to use a metronome? I know for me as a producer/beat maker and bass player sometimes its needed and at times its not but how is it for you as far as using metronomes

  • @Eturnal718 when I'm not quantizing (pretty much all the time), I only use the metronome for when I lay down the kick, snare and hi-hat... once the main rhythm is laid down, I turn it off. Because the click becomes SUPER off beat compared to how I laid down my sequence lol. If I turned the metronome back on after most of my beats are finished.... people would be like "wtf???... that's waaay off" LOL!

  • @BlackTuezday word!dont quantize your piano,guitar,main rythm track!!!ever,sounds like shit,wastes time,turn that bs off,it only dopenesses drums

  • @BlackTuezday the same exact thing happens to me! I purposely do my hihat and snares a little off beat, so when i put the metronome back on after the beat is done, it sounds way off. I couldn't even quantize my shit if i wanted to after the drums are done since it wouldn't match up with the tempo of the drums

  • i thought he sold his mpc?

  • @rakitic15 ...lol for the millionth time... when I said I was I not using the MPC anymore, I specifically said that I still had it, but wasn't using it. I'll never sell my MPC. I sold the motif rack and the synthesizer keyboards...that's it.

  • 7:57 hahahahaha nigga ur fuckin funny as shit, not at you, with you

  • you can hear it spur

  • great info

  • This is a very ignorant question but what exactly is quantizing? And what is setting the swing?

  • @OGtony88 quantizing is a thing in your mpc/software that correct the timing of your music pattern . swing is a mix of velocity and timing that i would have trouble explaining in a sentence

  • BoonDoc as a sensei, i like that :)

  • I was well pleased to see this tutorial. It was well thought out and well put together, Boonies passion for music is evident and it energizes and empowers others to grow and become vibrant producers as well. I used to hate when producers I looked up to hide their forbidden production secrets, but, you revealed and exposed those techniques and empowered up and coming producers and this is very VINDICATING! We'll continue to expose insider techniques, and spread knowledge by empowering others.

  • Youre right bro,i can really hear the difference.Thanx Bro! =)

  • boon doc, real shit...the beat u playin in the background from 2:06 man, that shit is ridiculous. talib will murk that and just a tip, talib is in the studio workin on his next album. HINT HINT man...

  • thx alot man u really helped me on this vid n what reflection filter are u using over there?

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah great video....

  • Boonie i really appreciate the vid man you should make more like this one. Its very informative and its nice to see your thought process and how you break things down.

    stay up!

looking forward to more vids like this one

  • As a listener of the beat do i hear the swing factor differently compared to the person who lays down the drum pattern, i'm kind of confused because it seems the swing is based on the emotion of the person laying down the drum pattern

  • i love hearing your opinion on this kinda shit.. i can talk HOURS about production philosophies. youre one of the few cats i'll actually sit and listen to and absorb

  • Is there any swing knob on propellerhead reason?

  • @AGT415 Reason 4 introduced ReGroove which you can use for the swing. It also contains loads of presets even some from the MPC as wellat different %'s.

  • Really got your swing down boon.

Besides swing, you really need to play with your strength, non-quantize and random quantize settings. Setting these right can make it groove a lot better. One really good idea is to use a low strength for a loose feel, along with some swing. Random quantization can do wonders on hihat, but is hard to get right on other stuff.

  • I love watching this guys videos, he's such a great decent guy, not like all these gangsta idiots tryna be all that, this guy will go far and end up leaving the low-lifes behind :)

  • @VolvoSupport word

  • dope.

  • Good breakdown of swing boon.

  • to me it's two different styles sort of... I most of the time quantize my kicks/snares but my high hats I don't quantize

  • great video(s). you should make more producing tips videos like these, very helpful and interesting to hear your opinions

  • Welcome back!!!!!!

  • Good information bro

  • nice video

  • Thank you so much for doing this. I cannot get enough tutorials on how to get good sounding drums.

  • Thank you Boonie ! Keep it up! Helps me a lot ! Peace & Love

  • Thanks for the tutorial Boon Doc!

  • Thanks a lot Boonie really helps bro thanks again peace.

  • yo you help alot ive been producing for a few years now and man i feel like i dont know anythin lol

  • @Fperez04 then quit.

  • @Nazaret99 you dont do shit with your life eat a dick hoe

  • @Fperez04 check myspace(dot)com/ruslanmusic, and get on my level.

  • @Nazaret99 Checked your 'level' - You should stop hating!

  • Dont forget velocity, the hardness and softness of playing those drums.you dont have to bang every kick and snare out as well.Just a thought to be added.

  • @aworthlesslugg yeah, but not when you have pads that are worn out and weren't made with the best with sensitivity.

  • @BlackTuezday 12 and/or 16 levels mode can be ur best friend :)

  • u always got the info and i seen you on the red bull competition you doing it big

  • u always got the info and i seen you on the red bull competition you doin it big

  • Accidentally hit dislike at first, but canceled it out. Thoroughly enjoyed the tips. It really made me want to get back to work on my beats. Really going to put these tips into effect. Thanks.

  • Love the process stuff, Boonie. I hope you keep doing this tutorial type shit, or at least explaining your working methods. Your finished music is dope, but more than that, YouTube is perfect for the kind of shop-talk conversation you do so well.

  • i know some people do quantize at double tempo and 1/8 note with some swing and they say it sounds great.

  • boooney THE MASTA! thanks!

  • When did you get an MPC back lol

  • Darm man, I like your honest, but nice way of talking. I mean, people be all up on youtube renting about stuff, because there personal viewpoint is different then others, but you understand too respect other people. That's cool man. I'm a big fan

  • we got soul in FL too. burn one with me Boonie!!

  • @Papparazzi18 but its easier expressing them with your fingers than with clicks (i know u click with ur fingers^^,but u know what i mean)

  • Detroit has much love for Boonie May.

  • Big Video shouts from the UK

feeling wat your saying you gotta get that mix of your sounds with the right swing on each practice makes perfect

Def gotta quantize club music too hate tracks that are bangers and can't be mixed well chopping is Amateur

  • i prefer non quantized but sometimes quantized is needed

  • Thank you Boonie!

  • great stuff man

  • cool man thnx 4 the teachings ;)

  • Boonie!!! Make Me Your Prodigy!! Mentor Me, Grand Master Yoda!! *serious face*

  • I'm french , but with boon doc i'm understanding all that he says ! haha magic !

  • Very important to understand this! Great tutorial. Even the best drummers (on a drum-kit) are slightly off when they play.. that makes it sounds natural instead of a programmed feeling. Nice!

  • I agree i usually always quantize my drums, the only thing i don't quantize al the time is the sample chops , just play them till it feels like same as Kev Brown does peace1

  • good video :) but please don't talk about travis barker! he sucks! talk about all the gospel drummers instaid,Tony royster jr,Thomas pridgen,Teddy Campbell,Aaron spears and guys like that ! Peace

  • PLEASE DO MORE OF THESE. Thank you so much.

  • good to see again, more videos like that! thank u!

  • lol the body thing is so true I don't dance on my chair but my feet do some really convoluted movements when trying to get beats and rhythms :)

Great vid gonna watch part 2

  • this should be a 10 part series cause it a great topic for hip hop producers...Great stuff Doc

  • So true :)

  • NICE

  • Thanks for the video, man, this is definetly goin in the favorites.

  • good to see you up again brother..... you can only get stronger
