As far as I know, the Xeon series are processors for servers or data farms.

Yes. The new Intel Xeon processor 5500 series is for 2 socket servers. Core 2 processors are typically used for consumer computers, not servers. If you're looking at getting a 2 socket server, look at the Xeon processor 5500 series. If you're looking at getting a desktop and want the best performance, look at the Core i7 processor. If you're looking at getting a notebook look at a Core 2 processor.
