When the 13 colonies concoted the system, senators were independent, they voted for the good of their state and did not take orders from a central party.
The Senators today are controlled by the national party & washington lobbyists.
I'm a strict constitutionalist and usually agree with jesse, but the electoral college was designed to balance the union otherwise it wouldn't really matter if people in less populated states vote because they would be outnumbered by the notions of the more populous ones. We live in a democratic republic and not a democracy, our founding fathers understood that a democracy doesn't work well.
