  • Good informative video, I liked it. What I do with rice is freeze it for a week to kill any weevil eggs and then store it in glass mason jars. That won't make it last 10 years, but it will keep any rodents or bugs out of it. Plus if any bugs do hatch in the rice, the glass jar wiil keep them from spreading.

  • Hello - Thank you for your videos. When you use your vaccum pack, do you still have to put any oxygen absorbers in - or is the vaccum pack, food product/original packaging enough by themselves enough to store it for longer than the original shelf life if it was to stay in its shop bought state? Thanks

  • @misscpb

The point of the vacuum seal is to remove oxygen, so you don't have to use the oxygen absorbers. I have found that sometimes the seal isn't perfect so you have to check your stored goods to make sure there is still a vacuum.

  • @TheLordHumungus Ok thank you.

  • How long do Mayo and ketchup packets last, you think?

  • Respond to this video...

Should last a while, ketchup especially. I would be a little more wary of mayonnaise, as it could go rancid. Not a problem for me though, as I don't like it anyway so I'm not worried about keeping any around.

  • Peanut butter is also good to have on hand. Honey, Jam, dried fruits and nuts are also pretty important for their nutrition content.

I also store olive oil, salt and PEPPER (I love me some pepper) to keep me interested in mundane pantry items.

Those pouches of tuna you've got in video 1, they've got salmon, salmon fillets, and I also saw a chicken variation. Very handy in a pinch, especially w/o the use of tools.

If you can, alcohol is great to have handy.

    Thoughts on pantry milk? (soy/rice)

  • @starblood85

yeah spices and seasonings are very important.

For my milk source I use powdered regular milk (not soy) stored long term in buckets with mylar bags and O2 absorbers, just like the rice, beans, or anything else.

  • Can you pack dry things into smaller cans like store bought size, insted of those huge cans????

  • where can I get powdered eggs and canned butter?

  • @ilovety65 Honeyville Grain and Emergency Essentials, both on line have great sites and decent deals plus great shipping rates.

  • @Herbalpagan I got their eggs, they are great, and did find canned butter, which tastes better than the grocery stores.I wish I could find rainbow canned choc. milk.had that in belize, they don;t sell in the US.

  • Great Video... one thing... when u use your Vac sealer, u need to open the factory seal as to remove the stored air for 2 to 3 times the intended date...Keep up the great prep work. Thanks for the video. Andrew

  • great tip, thanks.

  • Just wanted you to know I just got my powedered eggs...appreciate the tip.

  • Awesome!

  • Thank you, very good advice.

  • What about water. without water you'll won't suvive more then 3 days

  • yeah water is very important. It's important to not only have stored water, but to have ways to purify water, since it is very difficult and not always realistic to be able to store enough water for like a year.

I have a video up about a tip for water storage, and I will be doing more videos in the future about water

  • Great information. Nice to use these vids as a checkpoint against what we've already done. Nice job.

  • thanks

  • Good job ! keep making video to show us how thank you

  • Thanks! Don't worry, I'm just getting started.

  • I See You date Your Food, I even date My can Goods With A Sharpie,And Always Rotate Them ----Thanks,great vid !

  • Thanks! Yeah I always write the date on there. Makes it a lot easier to tell at a glance how old it is.

  • Great videos b.t.w...

  • thanks

  • Particularly on those potatos ... they go bad faster because of the ingredients like butter, cheese, milk ... extra vac seal might not help those to store longer... Same thing with crackers that are butter flavored... for instance Club crackers...

  • Yeah good point, but its not as much of an issue with the dehydrated stuff like the potatos, but it can still can affect them

That's why i cycle through my supplies, so most stuff doesn't even have to go past the use-by date, i just vacuum seal it for double protection.
