In my opinion, Detroit is home for the some of the country's most talented drummers. I've never had the pleasure of meeting Thadeus Dixon but I've been a fan of Derrick Sorrell for years. He is among the best Funk/R&B drummers I've ever encountered. He has fantastic foot control. I just wish that Derrick had showcased his lightning quick kick drum techniques more. Although his rimshots show his indepth understanding of dynamic rudaments, the second half of his audition was more fun to watch.

I witnessed the entire audition with my own eyes. I wasn't impressed by the stickler stuff Derrick did on the rims. However, Thaddeus was solid, gritty, and raw sounding, which I liked the most. On Thaddeus's second solo, the kick drum was moving and it was obvious that it affected his playing. They also auditioned on how well they played NeYo's music. It was a given that Thaddeus played the songs much better than Derrick. Overall, Thaddeus did the better job, and he got the gig.
