I dont know if you had an issue with the tail making extremely high frequency vibrations, here in venezuela there was only one trex 450 kit available, and it was the sport, unfortunately i bought it, and didnt knew it was going to be a pain in the *ss to correct those wag problems and vibrations, my vibration is coming from the tail as soon as i put on my tail blades, its weird though because those blades are balanced in every way!, if u had any problems with vibrations please let me know :)
Damn that's a 60 dollar servo and 150 for gyro. That's a lot of dough to drop on my cheep hk clone! My plan was to replace parts I break with align parts, because my heli budget is microscopic. So I must ask, how well will this gyro do when forced into concrete from 200 feet? I know I can rebuild the servo but I want to use whatever gyro I choose on several helicopters to save money. Also I really want to end up with a 600 size fly bar less one day. So do I skip all this and save for a micro b
@Dannysrc .Well…. I’ve had many crashes and I’ve destroyed everything more than once, but never damaged the gyro maybe I’m lucky, so in regards to what gyro you should purchase all I can advise is your heli’s weakest point will always be the cheapest part and/or the pilot.
Good video and great comments! My conclusion is to save and get that gyro and servo for myself. I am new to helicopters and watching videos like this and reading your comments helps accelerate my learning curve tremendously. Your heli IS rock solid.
I have the same model and same exact problem with wag. I appreciate you posting your solution, though I hope to cure it somehow without having to buy a new gyro. Maybe figure some way to isolate the GP780 from vibes, but it's difficult because there's almost no extra room in the gyro mounting area for any padding.
Man I tried everything, the last thing I wanted, was to spend £150 for a servo / gyro. Unfortunately I tried everything, the wag did improve slightly, but was always there, slap back was also a massive problem I still today talk to different people and most agree the stock gyro is too vibe sensitive for the 450 size heli, The tail servo in my opinion is S***T, I would change the Tservo immediately, you will see a massive improvement, it might be expectable to you. Good Luck my Friend
@MrSpeedy01 Thanks for the reply. I've noticed the spartan quark gyros are often mounted with a metal plate sandwiched between 2 pads. I read that this can help greatly so I am going to give this a try before spending that much cash on a new gyro, cross your fingers. :)
Also I notice the extra clamp on your boom right next to the boom block. I solved my boom problem the same way, an extra clamp so the boom doesn't slide into the block during flight. :)
@MrSpeedy01 I tried the metal plate sandwiched between two Spartan gyro mounting pads and after a quick (2 battery) test flight it seems to have made a significant improvement. I'm guessing 90% reduction. Had to move the gyro to the front by the motor though, the pads were way too thick and would not fit in the original gyro location. Very big improvement, well worth the effort!
@abcd123443211 that’s great news man..... I also positioned the gyro at the front of the heli, although i found it to reduce T wag significantly, unfortunately i also found the heli to be less responsive for 3D flying, I couldn’t live with it, theses heli's should be rock solid.
Got the same setup (GP780, s9257). No problems with grounded tail, boom and chassis. Without grounding, I got a wag, too - especialliy in cold & dry weather conditions. S9257 is a must-have for advanced pilots. Great Video - lot of work ! Like it.. Spartan Rocks, anyway !
This is an awesome video. Lots of good information and now I feel these is hope for my new 450 Sport too. You did all the hard work, but let me tell you I appreciate you putting your personal experience up here and making things easier for us. It's a crappy feeling when you have put out the kind of money it requires to buy this heli and all the time it takes to build to deal with these problems. Same problems, in addition my rotors are so far off it takes 3 revolutions of 2" tape to balance.
Firstly the aerial cables connected directly to the receiver should always be stretch out horizontally however, when i handle the copter the cables get pushed and twisted back into the frame and I'm forever pulling on them too straighten them, after a while the aerial cables break.
That’s great news mate, and you should count yourself lucky. I know quite a few people that have built this particular model, most having similar problems with tail wag and slap back, some can live with it, some can’t and they’ve had to change the gyro in most cases, or / and the servo to get this heli to fly correctly.
I was told by a technician working for Align that two exact gyro's will have different characteristics making each gyro unique from each other.
@38super I did think at one time static could be the problem, but why did the tail wag virtually correct its self when I replace the DS420 for the S9257, I only seem to have a very slight random tail wag thereafter, surly if static was the cause of the problem, tail wag would have still continued. Anyway, apart from that, i still had slap back which i couldn't eliminate, that's why i replaced the GP780 for the Quark. You don’t know anybody that wants to buy a GP780 / DS420 do you!!!!! Lol
@SmilingBumpy As stated in my vid, I tried everything but the heli always gave me Tail wag /slap back which was unacceptable, Hey.. I was unlucky with the GP780 / DS420. Check out some forums, it seems that quit a few people have the same problems with the GP780 and the DS420. I’m glad you’ve got no problems with your heli, and I’m happy that I’ve replaced those Items for the Quark and the Futaba now I’ve got no problems with tail wag or slap back, my heli is just rock solid it’s quite weird.

@wretchedmaniam The new mount definitely resolved 98% of the problem for me, apparently the GP780 really really does not like vibrations. :)

Static electricity built up from tail rotor belt. Ground your tail to a motor mount

What is wrong with the gp780 and the DS420? I've got the sport super combo myself since last week and i find nothing wrong with it?
