It is so horrible how they portrayed Adolph Rupp. They don't realize that his Kentucky teams were always very good running teams so the statement about who they put on the floor is crap.
Don Haskins and the other players didn't even think of it as a racial thing at the time.
Blacks didn't want to play at Kentucky because it wasn't safe for them to play on the road at the other schools in the SEC such as MS, AL, and LA.Thats 5 games right there.
great movie. to bad their championship run was nothing like this. Still a Wildcat till the day I die, but I give them much respect. Bobby Joe Hill was the best guard we have ever faced....well until Saturday when we face Kemba
Also, Texas Western wasn't a "surprise" team. All season long they were ranked in the top 10, often in the top 5. Kentucky and Duke went back and forth as the 1-2 ranked teams, while Texas Western was not far behind.
that's a good point but those two teams and kansas were so much better than everyone else at the time that if somebody even got close to winning it was a surprise.
What was never mentioned in the movie is that in the semifinals, Kentucky played the #1 team in the country (Duke) with several UK players recovering from the flu. Kentucky had a "thin" bench, so most players played almost the whole game, which Kentucky won in OT. The finals were played the next night (no day off). TW had a fairly easy semi against Utah. But the UK players were exhausted. BTW, in 1966, Duke was also all-white.
I cried watching this movie. The hardships they faced, the pain and discrimination. I'm a white and I don't understand what's so bad about black people. I find them cooler than whites and I dont get what is so 'coloured' about them. Blacks are great people, they can be smart, kind, helpful but the people in the past didn't give them a chance >:'-(
Uk has taken more abuse over this game than is WARRANTED ! TX WESTERN has won one FLUKE TITLE, for kentucky it's a BUMP IN THE ROAD. look i am a LOUISVILLE FAN but even UK has gotten a raw deal here
@azbaldy5 Oh hush, if it wasn't for this "fluke" then black players would still be discriminated. And UK didn't suffer any abuse, Don Haskins and UTEP got the brunt of all the abuse after they won, getting over 40,000 letters from racists saying it was wrong for starting 5 black players. You have no idea what your talking about.
P.S. Your a Louisville fan right?? Say thanks to Rick Pitino for me, for giving us (UTEP) Derrick Caracter.
I was in this movie, in several clips, when #44 falls and they show his mom and dad,Im the white guy behind his mom. and to let everyone know it was filmed in New Orleans. Keep you racest comment to yourself
I never liked Kentucky, only reason why top recruits are going their now is because a lot of those kids just like Coach Calipari and he is one of the best at getting guys ready for the NBA, that school will become a 1 and Done Factor but in return Calipari will win a lot of games and even Championships
and stop defending Rupp he was a flat out racist even old players that play against his teams back then said he was racist, he only started accepting Blacks because they started taking over
Rupp only recruted a black player because times were changing and they were taking over the game but by the time he recruited his first black player it was too late times had changed and he was behind the times which led to Kentuckys drought
Adolph Rupp would NOT have liked UK Guard Rex Chapman. Sure, Chapman was a great player and most importantly where Rupp was concerned, Chapman was white. However, Chapman was NOT racist. In fact, Chapman's dating preferences got him in trouble with UK coaches and officials. Chapman dated white women, but he also very much enjoyed dating Black women. He wouldn't stop dating Black women and was told to keep his dating of Black women secret. Let Calipari's players be seen dating white women TROUBLE
I'm a kentucky fan but love this movie, even though the exageration of the racist factor was a little much considering Rupp was the first to recruit a black player in the SEC, but i understand it was a movie
The only racist aspect of the movie that might have been overstated was the confederate battle flags. There were UK fans at that game, sitting in the upper bleachers with a confederate flag on conspicuous display. Maryland Coach G. Williams was a ballplayer for UofM during that era and was at the game with 2 of his Black teammates. He remembers the UK fans using the words nigger throughout the game. The UK fans were racist then, many are now...and Adolph Rupp was a racist thru and thru.
Rupp was NOT the first in the SEC to recruit a Black player. Rupp was NOT the first SEC coach to recruit a Black player. Coach Roy Skinner of Vanderbilt was the first SEC coach to recruit a Black player. Skinner WANTED to abolish the SEC color barrier. Rupp did NOT.
Here is what Rupp's own asst. coach remembers of Rupp's feelings about recruiting Blacks to play for UK...an ACTUAL QUOTE: "Harry, that son of a bitch is ordering me to get some niggers in here. What am I going to do ? He's the boss." - From Harry Lancaster's autobiography.
i met the real nevel shed today. he gave a speech to my class at sac. really touching. i almost cried when he was talking about his parents. lol he's a nice man.
its so funny that back then everyone was so shocked to see 5 black men on the floor and yet 40 years later you will never seen even 4 white guys on the floor at once lol
@XtremeWeatherr I guess you aren't watching the NCAA March Madness 2011. But what hit me about the story was in 1966 raised in Oakland Ca I wouldn't have given a thought to what they did as special. To me then I didn't know white people didn't like black people because they were black. I found out though soon after 1966 I was 12 and all of a sudden a lot of black kids didn't like me because I was white. Raised by my mom by herself, we didn't- couldn't leave during "white flight". Not sad bout it
