Speaking from a lot of experience and after a bunch of research, the absolute best thing to have is Windows 7 Media Center 64 bit, this of course means you have to purchase Windows 7 which sucks but if you already have windows 7 you don't even need to look at this .PDF, after a few tweks and changes with media center studio and some theme alterations and .mkv enabling, nothing beats it.

@kuhne Media Center is the easiest to understand an configure. The problem is people download video and audio in non-mainstream formats. Don't scream FLAC is commonplace and Mainstream its not how many people even know what it is outside of the geek/techie circle? Same with other formats of video. If it was uniform this wouldn't be an issue. Media Center is fine for most people. Mediaportal, XMBC or MythTV are good but there's not enough good to make me switch.

@dj4monie as I said, with the right codecs, media center works like a charm with .mkv and pretty much every file you throw at it. I have a creative labs dock I use to connect to my 7.1 sound system and I play all my mkv's with media center, at 1080p and with DTS audio using shark007 codecs.

There are things in which I just speak out of my ass to create a fuzz but in the whole media center thing, I actualy speak from a lot of experience and I can say there's no reason to use something else

Hmm, makes me wonder if a MediaCenter could work with a FreeToAir Dish or even somehow connect it to a FreeToAir DigiBox and turn it into a Pvr+MediaCenter. I hope someday, I can have a dedicated Media Center, under my TV. I don't just want a MediaCenter, I want the MediaCenter to be my free TV service.

XMBC has the best interface but it keeps crashing like hell I can't even use it know. I tried reinstalling and nothing yet. I'll have to wait till they get a stable version. Do you recommend me a stable media center software for windows?

@jaketvee actually you can get it free... it comes as a standalone install also... many of the usb stick tuners have it bundled also. Windows 7 Media Center is one of the best, I use it as nothing is as good as MC7 and associated plugins.

I use the Vista Media Center, because you need an OS anyway and so Vista Media Center is some kind of "free" too. because the ones he talks about at the beginning can´t do what i need and most of them do not support my hardware. so i think of you buy a HTPC and Vista as the OS you should use the VMC because it fits nice to the rest of the OS

A little update I got Fuppes and Mediatomb to work and ditched Windows XP entirely. The media center was the last thing that was tying me to Windows so when I fixed it I had no excuse anymore!

I have WinAmp, but I might uninstall it. It uses too many resources.

If you're just wantin to watch DVDs or some kind of media file, you're better off downloadin 2 programs - Foobar2000 and Media Player Classic. They do what they're supposed to do and they don't lag your computer. I just got done watching a movie off the Media Player and I gotta say, the thing hasn't failed me yet, unlike this other player that fucked up even before I loaded the disc.

WinAmp and the K-Lite codec pack is perfect for me. I have Media Player Classic too, and I used to use it before I got K-Lite.

Oh, and FLV Player is nice for FLV's before I got a codec for WinAmp.
