Hi Jackospacko. From experiemtning, I have found that the more colours you use, then the steadier the viewers stare has to be. Failing to maintain a fixed stare causes the borders of the colours to become 'fuzzy'. In a more complex image, it simply spoils the illusion.
To anyone who doesn't see it, watch this at least twice. one to prove that the end picture is not in colour and once staring at the dot to see the effect.

the eye gets slighty imprinted with the colours
if you were to layer the first picture with the second you would get colour

it is not an ilusion...i tell you why...turn on at 0:18..and it's black and white...while you dont watch at first time at the dots...
