Both China and ASEAN cannot afford to go to war with each other since their economies are inherently tied up and dependent to each other. Much of China's raw materials have to be imported from Southeast Asia. And Southeast Asia has a lot of Chinese investments and vice versa.

Any civilized nation should know that it has international obligations to follow, legal implications if you make ask. According to the UN Convention on the Law of the Seas, any island or water that lies within 200 nautical miles away from a state's land territory is part of their Exclusive Economic Zone, since all of the Philippine claims is the Spratlys are about 500 nautical miles away from China's land territory, its claims are invalid. Any country can make up any law, doesn't have to automatically mean they are valid.

They may be ethnically and culturally related to Filipinos but historically, they have never been part of the Philippine archipelago in any way. Even if you take all sultanates, kingdoms and fiefdoms in account that have ever existed...Guam has never been seen as part of the archipelago. The same goes to Palau and the Caroline Islands. They were just incorporated to the country during the Spanish colonial era.

@chineseheart The Philippines as a country was just created/carved out by Europeans. But in pre-colonial times, the archipelago basically had nothing to do with those islands. As I said, as a cause of migration they do have racial and cultural affinities the same way Filipino highland tribes are ethnically related to the Taiwanese aborigines of Formosa and Filipino Muslims related to the indigenous tribes of Sabah in Malaysia. But that doesn't automatically mean the Phils owns those places...

They only have cultural and racial affinities with Filipinos due to thousands of years of inter-migration.

Both China and ASEAN cannot afford to go to war with each other since their economies are inherently tied up and dependent to each other. Much of China's raw materials have to be imported from Southeast Asia. And Southeast Asia has a lot of Chinese investments and vice versa.

According to the UN Convention on the Law of the Seas, any island or water that lies within 200 nautical miles away from a state's land territory is part of their Exclusive Economic Zone, since all of the Philippine claims is the Spratlys are about 500 nautical miles away from China's land territory, its claims are invalid. Any country can make up any law, doesn't have to automatically mean they are valid.
