As far as I know, he was originally trained to be a keyboard player, but also dabbed around on the guitar. And then he started dabbing some more...

I saw mike on the G3 tour with Vai...he played along with Fripp and it was amazing...He is definitely a gifted man that deserves more recognition than he has gotten.
