For anyone who does not sing or is not a tenor, it is difficult to describe what unmatched flow, legato and seamless range this giant of singing had. Really, singing is NOT this easy for 99.99999% of the rest of us!!!! And what underlying pathos that was the basic color of his voice. Hearing it is like having liquid gold poured over your head!
Goddamn booze grabbed him and wouldn't let go! And just like that, he was gone. His voice never flagged. Can you imagine 20 more years of it? We were robbed!
@seektheforce The language does matter somewhat since the vowels differ greatly between the Russian and the Swedish, changing the line. That said, this is a terrific rendition that I have no quarrel with. He was entitled to sing it in Swedish if he felt like it!
It is a beautifully sung performance, but for my ears as a Russian speaker it sounds strange. And Swedish is definitely not the language with the right inflections for this aria. What a pity he did not sing it in Russian....
Singing Lensky's aria in one's final concert, such a tragic irony, the awareness of which made listen to each and every bit of it more intently than ever.
I will never forget the first time and the many other times I heard this magnificent performance. The subtle changes in dynamics and the silken line are temendous
My grandfather´s mother Olga von Knorring was Russian (born in 1856). I bet she attended the prémière of this opera! (she may have left some diary. Who knows?) (one of her sons by the way became a composer. And pupil of Sibelius.)
Tal vez su ultimo recital en vida pero una voz que permanecerá siempre vigente para la historia de la lirica y de lasvoces mas bella de la historia de la musica y no tan solo de la opera.
L'air de Lenski. Es gibt wenig Bessers!

Even for someone who is not a tenor but has sung professionally primary roles knows that what Bjorling is doing here is so incredibly difficult!
A true master of all times.

Très belle version,même si le suédois est difficile à entendre dans cet air.

God, he's so incredibly good.... if you love this aria check out Domingo's (Tchaikovsky Gala, not Rostropovich), and Lemeshev's and Wunderlich's.

Thank you. Much better than his studio recording of the same.

It is not the language that matters, it is the person singing, and the notes that matter.

Esta pieza es tan bella liiricamente hablando que cantada en ruso o en sueco ,suena agradable al oido y en la voz de Boejrling es aun mas melodiosa.
