@fairlytaleofnewyork so glad you enjoyed and appreciated this. It really is one of the most beautiful moments I know from any singer in any work. Perfect, really.
Part of Dame Janet Baker's magnificent art stems from her fidelity to and profound understanding of the character, score and text. She is a astounding exponent of the "word" giving her singing meaning and making her portrayals mesmerizing! Instead of scattering her considerable artistic forces performaning in umpteen opera houses, she chose quality over quantity and concentrated her efforts in a few venues. Thanks to sharky123 for posting and ditogam for so generously sharing!
One of the best opera performances I´ve ever seen! (unfortunately not live. Only on TV.) She was sort of the Judi Dench of opera! (looking like a nice British Dame. But capable of more dramatic expression than anyone else!)
Sharky 123, thank you for posting. People get excited about so-and-so newcomer, and, to a point, that's great. But listening to this aria, we are hearing the voice of one of the *supreme* greats. I'd love to see the last aria, the duet where Ulysses and Penelope are reunited. Again, thanks for this gem.
Dame Janet Baker is admirable vocally, musically and in emotions. She posses a rare phrasing to emotionally make the listener involved. Thank you for posting this video beautiful !
Souful. You completely get that she's barely holdilng back the flood of tears of release.
