trust me i'm an expert at this ;) always take notes when you believe something important has ben said it makes it look like you are definitely paying attention and they want to pick on someone who really isn't. Also forming the trust of the teacher helps (good grades and consistent homework) and when you are called on answer confidently and if you don't know it don't panic chances are you know something similar (like a similar formula) or remember something close to the occasion (english)
