  • Great Track See how Sunny rescues Tony at 1.39 When he loses his Way. lol

Magic Stuff . Thanks for Posting !!

  • Dedicated to Jeff after 38 years!

  • increible¡¡¡ no me canso de escucharla

  • The female vocalist is Sunny Leslie and what an incredibly beautiful voice she had! The other female in the group at that time was her sister Sue Glover who looked very much like Sunny and also had a beautiful voice.

  • very good.. I love it.. so tender.. :) ★★★★★

  • awesome

  • Very soulful voices with a real message to share...WOW what a novel concept.

  • Shame on you!!! What you have now is a Dictator, astronomical inflation, poverty, famine and worst of all, as you rightly mention, the slaughtering of your own people. Ignorance is bliss!!

  • @ELOOPEEL, I don't know who she is, but she has a bit of that "Grace Slick" air about her, don't you think???

  • Can anyone tell me the name of the female lead in this clip? I love her voice, in fact the whole group is one of my favorites. Thanks for sharing.

  • Gosh, finding this song takes me back to the first days I was first drafted into the armed forces in then the country of Southern Rhodesia(Zimbabwe) and dedicate it to all those brave and great friends who are no longer with us!!

  • @doctorplas1 Oh nostalgic days slaughtering the rightful people of Zimbabwe.

  • Forty one years old and a REAL GEM.

  • Great Song and a Great group.Songwriting at its Best & Real Vocals. No Hype it's all about the CRAFT & Standing the Test of TIME WOW !!!!!!!!!!.

  • Fantastic group and a fantastic song! Love it!

  • I remember the Airlines used this on the TV commercials.

  • excelente.

  • Love, Love This Song & Vid!!!! Thankyou....Anita <3

  • Wow.. amazing. They are singing in tune with the music. They have clothes on. Something you don't see today. Infact totally the opposite except that autotune does that for todays noise and or they just don't sing in tune at all.

  • Fantastic performance, when she looks at him singing its like my wife looking into my eyes,I wish.

  • The very best of Youtube!

  • still give me goose bumps .. love it!!!

  • what a great song

  • Beautiful

    Thank you for posting this

  • Yes, it was a golden age. With such good, happy music, no wonder people took their eye off the ball and let the neurotics and paranoids take over - again. One day the world will recover its sanity.

  • I really expected some enterprising radio DJ who was old enough to remember this song, give it some continuous air play after 9/11.

  • Video killed the radio star and that's why music today SUCKS!

  • Ahh, back to the good old sixties and a trip down memory lane for me. Remember this one very well. Loved it back then and still love it today. Thanks for posting, nyrainbow4

  • I am so glad this came out back when talent and music mattered more than moves and looks. This would never have gotten play with the way we think today...and what a loss that would be.

  • nice hooters! stay away from herbal life -it's a cult AND they will steal your dough.

  • ah....the guy here on the left, the lead singer tony burrows, has a claim to fame in the pop world. he was the first (maybe only) man to appear on totp twice on the same show. i think he sang a song with edison lighthouse then a little later with white plains, both groups had hits in the charts and tony was lead singer in both a very good singer indeed. first woman to appear on totp twice in same show? tina charles, solo and with 5000 volts.

i think i have my pop history right!

  • @nuipret Three times in that one show, Tony Burrows appeared - in the original Brotherhood Of Man line-up, White Plains and, in that week, Edison Lighthouse were at number one with Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes).

Incidentally, one of the girls in that group. Sunny Leslie, had a hit in the 70s, as Sunny, with Doctor's Orders.

  • @arthurvasey yeah mate, i know about tony appearing 3 times on the same totp show! i even went and posted it about half an hour after i sent the one you see here, but what has happened to it?! it was sent ok because i saw it myself, but it ain't here now.

still, quite a feat to have that on your cv. i got the info about tony's three times from watching his interview here on yt, something about the man with a thousand voices. i said at the time that he is one of my pop heroes, and the guy is.

  • It should be the celebratory song for someone who has just completed a complex PCB layout featuring high speed digital and analogue components.

  • I heard this song on the way to Cooperstown, NY in August 2001. Man so prophetic!

  • This is a timeless piece of music. It never fails to move me even after over 40 years.

Indeed, this should be the anthem for all of humanity as stated by fubar1369.

    Thanks for the upload nyrainbow4.

  • Love you, Sunny Leslie!!! You and Tony made for an outstanding team. A beautiful, timeless performance. -3

  • gays anthem....

  • ahhh harmonized guitars/voices.....maybe the best thing that you can do in music ;')

  • This should be the anthem for all of humanity.

  • Once again the Super Talent Mr. Tony Burrows performing the male lead on this one! Tony's voice is responsible for such hits as 'Rosemary Goes', 'Beach Baby' and so many more in the last 60's, early 70's. This guy's voice is super versatile!

  • bring back the multi-pattern puffy shirt!

  • How ironic this has become a torch for America...when it's so English! But that's what makes us both great!!

  • I JUST LOVE THIS SONG!

    FOR UNTED WE STAND!

  • We need song's like this right now in America. Song's like this ended the killing of our brave men and women in Viet Nam and brought them home. The bankster's and the oil cartels have the USA and the rest of the world in a deathgrip. I wish there song's like this NOW.

  • Who is the big guy with no eyes?

  • She should have gotten braces as a kid...

  • JUST SOMETHING ABOUT THIS SONG THAT I REALLY LIKE!

ALWAYS LOVED THIS, SHE HAS A BEAUTUFUL VOICE!

    GREAT HARMONIZING HERE!

    MAYBE THAT'S WHAT STANDS OUT!

    JUST A GREAT SONG , I THINK!

  • Grooooovy outfits.

  • Awesome song from 1970...I was young but, do I ever remember it!!

  • I love this song. It brings back so many memories from when I was very young. I was traveling with my family from Chicago back to L.A. on a TWA flight and TWA has just begun experimenting with in-flight entertainment and this was one of the songs on their playlist. It brings a tear to my eye when I hear it now. For many years I thought that one of the singers must be black so it came as quite a surprise that they all are white but, oh my goodness, Sunny and Tony are wonderful.

  • These people look funny!

  • Goodness. One of the best live performances I have ever heard. These folks can really sing. Each and every one of them.

  • Sunny Leslie, who's real name is Heather Wheatman, was born in India and spent the '60s and '70s primarily as a session singer for Tom Jones, Joe Cocker, etc. She recorded in a duo with her sister as Sunny & Sue and also as a member of Midnight Ladies -- apart from her work with The Brotherhood of Man. In 1974, as simply Sunny, she had a UK hit with "Doctor's Orders," a song successfully covered in the U.S. by a former member of the Chantels, Carol Douglas. At last word Sunny is still singing.

  • @horarwgt Sunny also sang back up on some of Sandy Denny's solo albums.

  • Lovely song. So many thanks for posting this amazing clip!

In 1970, this would have been originated in colour but still looks very nice as a b/w 16mm film recording from the show.

Before the era of colour, b/w broadcast electronic studio cameras used Image Orthicon tubes which produced pictures with very recognisable (and sometimes objectionable) artifacts.

I've handled many BBC 16mm sepmag film recordings. They are often rare survivors from days when videotape was regarded as disposable!

  • john goodison, big guy?

  • @lovetheoldies Yes, Johnny Goodison is the big guy.

  • wow not heard this for years , what a great Song

  • 5 voices 2 Microphones !!! That shows the outstanding talent of

The original and the Best Brotherhood of Man!

  • Does anyone know who the Big Guy is singing here?

he looks a bit like Vigil from the Thunderbirds :)

  • 41 years old and still sounds great

  • Tony Burrows! Sue and Sunny (Both Sue and Sunny did the original backing voices for Joe Cocker's" with a little help from my friends"), and a great great writer Roger Greenaway! great stuff! (God I was in love with Sue!!!X)

  • sunny is beautiful.

  • By FAR the best version of this song!!!

    The Original and the Best!!!

Forget the Spin off Brotherhood of Man.

There was only one and this is it!!

    Sunny Rocks!!

  • How Good are these Guys Awsome !!!

  • This always made me cry, especially the dramatic harmonies..so beautiful!

  • This was the first hit for this Vocal ensemble, issued in 1968..Their last hit was "Save All Your Kisses For Me",issued in 1973.

  • just terrific!!!

  • Sorry, buddyeagle, your wrong. Brotherhood of Man were British. They were in the charts at the same time as Edison Lighthouse and White Plains all of who were just studio musos and backing singers brought together just to record the songs. In fact they were all the same artists in the three groups.

  • If you guys check out here on youtube the 1975 Eurovision performance of "Ein Lied kann eine Brücke sein" by Joy Fleming, you will see Sunny and Sue, along with Madeline Bell singing the backup vocals!

  • The clarity of this recording is amazing. Kind of makes you realize the modern equipment is not improving the sound, paul

  • How come you Brits don't fix your teeth? She looks like she has two Chicklets in her mouth! She is wonderful though!

  • what a great "live" performance! "KUDOS" thank you sooooo very much for the memories and the fun. tom d brick,nj

  • Omg that shirt he is wearing, LOL. I love see that in color. :P

  • @JewelofaSpace I've seen a still color shot of this performance somewhere (can't remember where) and the flowers on those shirts are bright yellow and bright orange with a white background.

  • United we stand, off course we are americans and we have those silly shirts.

  • thats sunnys sister with the two guys

  • ITS AMAZING THAT WITH SUCH INFERIOR MICROPHONES AND RECORDING EQUIPTMENT THEY CAN SOUND SO RICH AND BEAUTIFUL...

  • USA ---- hey folks, we HAVE to be together!! We can NOT be divided.

  • Sunny Leslie was born in Madras, India.

  • ..... can anyone see Jimmy Tarbuck

  • it is truly terrific,,,

  • Another classic from when looks were less important than talent. How times change!!

  • @JODIMAR45 and when a 30-something could produce a hit single :)

  • Love it!

  • I want one of those shirts!!!!!

    Where is Sunny Leslie now?

  • @RowleyBirkinn IU sed to have one of those shirts. haha. I always liked this song. It's funny that Sunny didn't sound like Cher, but the male singer sounded like Sonny. ;)

  • Nice, little-heard oldie from 1970. The female lead singer reminds me of Marie Osmond.

  • RETIREMESOON- johnny sadly past away a long time ago. But I'm sure putting this song in will be great. What is the movie about?

  • I love this song and the other songs with Tony Burrows on lead, too. But why were the guys dressed prettier than the girls here? :)

  • apologies to mary schwend. I left her at the door as i listened to this song thinking of Becky. two wonderful women. great song. lots of memories as you can tell.

  • Johnny Goodison ( Johnny B. Great) is my grandad. he was a amazing singer and song writter- thank you for all the kind comments about him and his band xx

  • @NicholGoodison Tell him ( Johnny B.GREAT ) that I am working on a movie called "THE TEN DIARIES " and I want to put this song link into the movie.

  • Zowie!!! That white girl has got some Soul.

  • 3 minutes of pure awesomeness.

  • Those were the days when singers could really sing unlike a lot of the stuff now which seems to be rap, crap AND smack!

  • I truly wish the young writers of "popular music" today to create with this kind of passion. Not only is the orchestration real, but if you notice- the strings "lead" the oncoming fervor accentuating their vocal phrasings...

    thanks nyrainbow

  • AWESOME!!! I thought some friends needed to hear this. Love, Peace

    God bless

  • whata great song...

  • I remember this song when it was at the top of the charts!... So Beautiful. One of my all time favorites. No music like this today! I can't believe how much music has went down hill, and I don't think I am an old fogie either! LOL

  • omg!! I just love Tony Burrows!! sucks I wan't born until 1979

  • this will be our song for our new society...! united we stand..devided we fall...!

  • I always loved this song..brings a tear to my eye...40 years ago!

  • Their song cries out to humanity. it's all baby steps. erick

  • Did he forgot the lyrics @ 1:40? Still, love this song!

  • @justmiau Yes, he started to sing the wrong lyric but recovered nicely. :)

  • I am so happy I was born in 1970...Carpenters hit the top of the charts, Judith Durham's first solo single is released, Mary Tyler Moore Show debuts, and this beautiful, inspirational gem comes out...who knew how good we had it.

  • Ain't it the truth! :-)

  • The dark haired girl singer looks like a cross between Marie Osmond and Elsie Tanner.

  • I lived thru this era and we just took it for granted that this was rock music..then one day it stopped..and the muse just seemed to be gone...glam rock,,disco , new wave , punk all ried to be great but by then it was over

  • @rds1958 Too bad ypu guys let this good music die and replace it with trash.

  • this amazing considering its live. Nice to hear Sue Glover clearly too. Great stuff

  • @leatherbruce There is also a video on youtube of "California Sunday Morning" where Sue sings lead.

  • I also loved Friends of distinction - Grazing in the grass I can dig it

  • Phenomenal group of artists! Particularly, the lead female singer! She's awesome!

  • United we stand.. Divided we fall..

    Never a truer word spoken..

    ♥PEACE♥

  • 40 years ago,my God,I drew my pension last month.

This was proper music, were we lucky or what?

  • Does anyone else think their harmonizing in this video sounds more terrific than their studio recording?

  • @AccordionManiac

Top of the Pops sound & music staff should be given kudos for their handling of the live performances on this show. Quality is fantastic. It's a gift for the ages to us.

  • Just watched other groups perform this, including the "new" Brotherhood of Man group that was on Eurovision. NO ONE sings this song as amazingly as these 5 singers!!!

  • @AccordionManiac I love you and couldn't agree with you more. What a brain and what a set of ears you have.

  • The notes they hit together at 0:44 - 0:47 sound just so amazing. Fantastic voices

  • a real classic! that can never be duplacated' no matter who 'is the artist singing this thair is only the best and then thairs the rest /brotherhood of man thanks 4 all the 'memories 'you gave us and one the song that defines what we are today and 4 ever as( americans )god bless

  • @gypsy2091 very true, can't be replicated!

  • Beautiful song. Love it

  • Loved this song then, love this song today. A good rally song.

    Thank you for sharing.

  • Thanks for this TOTP clip. Amazing - what was considered 'pabulum,' 'pop,' 'bubblegum,' etc., and now the so-called people making music (that's a joke) can't sing, nor write... they just 'keep it real,' TALK - or autotune...pathetic what's going on now.

  • @uszoninyc -- Careful. Your age is showing in your negative attitude toward today's "music".

BTW, today's "music" just plain sucks. There! ..... MY age is showing too.

  • Good Lord !! I never realized how under rated Sunny Leslie was. Beautiful pipes that were full of soul !!! I wonder what ever happened to her ? They just don't make em like this anymore...

Thanks for the feel good nyrainbow...

  • @Svette1T .. Yes .. the great Sunny Leslie .. Sunny duetted with the other lady in the Brotherhood of Man under the name "Sue and Sunny" in late 1970 .. I can't remember the name of the girl who was Sue or the name of the single .. can anybody help here? Sunny also had a solo hit in the UK in 1974 with "Doctor's Orders" .. covered in the US in 1975 by Carol Douglas.

  • @Svette1T Yeah Sunny is an excellent vocalist, you should hear her on Everlasting Love by Love Affair, is so clear and on Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes by Edison Lighthouse. pure class! xx

  • @Svette1 Thank you my Friend for saying what was in my Heart~! Your Friend, Donny

  • I always thought that "The Brotherhood of Man" was a black group. I have always dug this song. This song was used in the early 70's in a United Airlines commercial.

  • And yes Sunny is the hottest thing ever.

  • Never mind all these girl groups and boy bands of today. This is how singing should be done - and live too!

  • Geez, I remember outfits were hideous in the 60's and 70's, but I didn't remember them being that bad. Those are definitely the worst I have seen.

  • @beentheredonethatb4 They're mod Man! You dig?

  • @beentheredonethatb4 Did you try to say that outfits now I not hideous? I wish you could see a colorful world of sixties and seventies.Torn up jeans and T-shirts were for working on a car , not going on a date in a TRUCK! Trucks were used to haul manure,LOL. Also this video is black and white...and it makes it all look grey.

  • @chriskar5 I grew up in that era. I didn't like those outfits then either. I mean get serious. His shirt looks like a clown's outfit.

  • This is the story of the Czech Resistance as they were hunted down by the Nazi's following their assassination of the Gestapo chief Reinhard Heydrich outside Prague in June 1942. Listen to the song again with that in mind.

  • They sang... this song.

    >Message puts any breathing being in tears or at the very least moved.<

    Shake em' if it doesn't.

    ;0)

  • How about that Sunny Leslie? Ain't she hot?

  • That's Elsie Tanner!

  • Is she Amy Werinhouse's mom?

  • Sunny is the main singer, she also sang Doctors Orders!

  • What beautifully pure singing! I couldn't believe how long it took until I could tell that it was not a lip~sync. One of the great posts to me. Thanks!

  • Happy I lived this music. Most of the 60's, 70's.

And to the "dumbass" commenting on Tony's flubbed line - you're watching too much American Idol. Pros make mistakes in LIVE performances and go on without getting flustered. Make it part of the act and even have some fun with it. I'm sure Mr. Burrows is thrilled it's forever on record. And he can make that mistake thousand times over and still have more talent and ability to deliver than you'll ever hope for - stupid comments.

  • @derekec You totally misunderstood. Read my comment again. I was never criticizing anyone about the flub. Rather, that Sunny and Tony looked at each other when it happened, and smiled knowingly at each other, she added some vocal embellishment and they went on. It certain does demonstrate how professional they were, but also that they were really having fun performing together on this one. I have all the respect in the world for these two, this performance, and the song, was brilliant.

  • @Sctmpsn Not directed at you. You're comments are great and insightful. Some idiot threw a one-liner thinking he was smart instead showing incredible ignorance. For that one, my comment stands. Classic song with message that will "stand" forever.

  • The more I watch this video, the more I'm convinced this is the PERFECT record.

Title, arrangement, phrasing and ad-libs by Sunny, a most underrated (along with

Johnny Goodison) Blue-Eyed Soul singer(s) of ultimate porportions.

They're jamming on this record, watch Sunny explode at 2:09 thru 2:32!!

  • I can understand why Tony Burrows left the B.O.M after this mega-hit.

How could you ever top perfection, the perfect phrasing of Sunny Leslie

and the powerhouse background vocals of Sunny sister.

Sunny's talent equals or surpasses Judy Durham or Dusty Springfield.

    The perfect record.

  • Heavy Set 30 something people trying look like like hippies. The look didn't work but the song sure did.

  • Hi mrjoshjones1, think you'll find Sue Glover is the lead singer, Sunny Leslie, Sues sister is on the right, between the 2 guys. Regards

  • @rickym49 My mistake mrjoshjones, I do beleive you are correct. Apologies.

  • @rickym49 Thanks for the correction, except that you are mistaken. Sunny Leslie is lead singer on this one. There's no mistake on this one. Sunny is an amazing talent.

  • Sunny Leslie was a powerhouse of a singer, and she's having a blast on this

    record.

One of the best match-ups of British Pop singers ever assembled, as it shows

on this completely unforgettably beautiful recording.

  • Watch them smile at each other when Tony Burrows stumbles over his line at 1:42, I think it's cute. Sunny is there to pick him up and they go on. :)

  • Her name is Sunny Leslie (a.k.a. Heather Wheatman), and she is gorgeous with a lot of soul! She was a session singer, but United We Stand really shows us for all time what amazing talent she had.

  • This should be to number one song played at weddings.
