  • This video demonstrates practical wing chun perfectly!

  • Ok, why is this guy doing wing chun and boxing and BJJ? This video clip doesn't exactly sell me on wing chun.

  • Why are those attackers taking turns to attack? Wouldn't a real fight be more messy?

  • what if someone takes you down?!!

  • @sehpatr

There is a move we use to get back up in a base with a bridge to keep our opponent at a distance.

The second we're back up, we go back in. Thing is, when you're as good as Sifu Chan, you won't get taken down. :P

  • What kind of masters in wing chun has he trained under? what linage?

  • @shiifu Check out his interview article from Martial Arts Illustrated. Go to the KamonWingChun website, and click interview. Its the 3rd interview on the list.

  • @bbostock Nice Wing Chun and nice video and very good editing!

  • wing chun is the best chineese kung fu art there is...

yip-man owned with this style later on he taught bruse lee later on he became a legend... he was developing a new martial art...

i have been invited to kamon in either mortan hall or st john street

BTW doubledowner he dont teach portsmith

and if you want to see the skills watch (BOTH) yip man 1 , yip man 2

both created by the best fighter there is now donnie chan

  • good job

  • I got to red II at the Portsmouth Kamon, was so lucky to train with Kevin Chan.

Without a doubt the best martial art for practical self defence, I hope I get healthy enough to go back one day. Maybe when I stop smoking.

  • @DoubleDowner Hey I'm going for my yellow1 grading in two weeks, in your experience, is it hard to get yellow1 or relatively easy ?

  • @R4mb0786

Well my reply has come a month and a half late, but how did you do !? hope you passed and with a decent score ! (do they still issue the little blue books for gradings)

  • @DoubleDowner Hey thanks for asking!, yeah I passed ! I got 8 out of ten, and they have little black books now for gradings.

  • Nice video!

To all who say Wing Chun is not made for street fights, it is perfectly appliable for such situations. Just make sure you don't overdo it and get problems with the law. A streetfight won't go to the ground. There is a hard ground, neither the attacker nor you want to go there. You would get too much injuries just from rolling on the ground.

  • @ admbrns WC is very rooted, and great for close range striking, such as mui thai's knee clenches and elbow strikes, however even if you learn BJJ and can fight grappling on the ground shit can happen and you can get stabbed or shot, or one of your opponent's friends could run up and soccer kick you in the nuts. >.<

  • NICE . . . CONGRATS ! ! !

  • Heh, this dude can box.

  • first i'd like to say i like the way you are training, but mass attack and multiple opponent scenarios should not be trained in a one-at-a-time manner.

  • disagree fight should be finished before it goes to ground if your a good fighter, muay thai and bjj are sports,wc is a system designed to immobilise,if you were trapped in a corner or in aphone box you woulkdnt be able to do a spinning back dragon kick, kamon wing chun is the complete system for the streets, ever evolving system with elemements of boxing, mthai, wing chun...

  • i complete system agree that wing chun is definately not a complete system for street fighting. But then it have alot of extremely deadly technique like those quick punch. I think muay thai and brazillian jitsu will form a complete package.

  • there's no complete system for the streets, that's why it pays to be a well rounded martial artists.

  • WC stance is very rooted and techniques are implemented to keep the fight from going to the ground. Having said that, you do need to be adaptive and have ground skills cuz shit happens. you may not be able to do 100% WC in a street fight, but you cant do 100% any other form either.

  • I don't know why Kevin Chan has to do BJJ as well. This proves that Wing chun does need more techniques and is not a complete system for the streets, especialy if the fight hits the floor...

  • in a street fight any thing goes...therefore your targets are different i.e. the eyes, throat, and biting are fairgame now. Size will never effect an eye gouge, they are the most sensitive and disabling target of the body. vital points change the game because now speed wins.

  • True. A good lightweight boxer could easily knock out a bloke twice his size. But size does impact a lot on fighting. If you are fighting a big guy, most strikes that you'd normally use could go out the window (ie a kick to the guys ribs might just bounce off). Hence the need for arts like wing chun etc which work against any sized opponents

  • he got his BJJ black belt from the legandary Mauricio Gomez, but he trained wing chun under numerous wing chun masters

  • Kungfuking166: ..if so, u wont receive the full benefits & essence of what your meant to be learning.

Better to focus 100% on one system at a time. Not to say u cant learn 2 systems during the same period, just that u should focus solely on what ur training on that moment in time. Eventually when ur advanced enough in both, they will be 2nd nature to u & blend more effectively, without the risk of mixing both priciples. Otherwise itl b no different from learning from another hybrid system.

  • Sorry I've been late in replying. Haven't been on here for a while

jaywesty - I agree with you 100% and to clarify - we do not teach one week boxing, one week kung fu, one week bjj etc

We train students in traditional kung fu for an intense period. by senior level they know the basics of kung fu. however, we also train sparring which still uses wing chun footwork. the point of the sparring is to learn how to take pressure coming in (ie an opponent who wants to knock your block off)

  • Kungfuking166: Getting students to develop key WC principles is hard enough without confusing them further with an entirely different art, when they have yet to master that of their main system.

Although advanced students would be better adapted to this as they are already experts in WC, thus the risk in crossing both principles are limited.

I view there needs to be a clearer distinction btween both arts when taught. As they say you cant learn new things with a cup half full...

  • Kungfuking166: I thinks its expected WC schools incorporate street scenarios into their classes.

However I sense that by incorporating different aspects into 1 system lies 2 potential dangers: 1. Potential dillution of the main system your trying to teach, 2. Confusion among students, especially beginner and some intermediate.

The principle of both are are very different, ie. WC- relaxation, undercommitted techniques, economy of movement -BJJ requires more physical strength and manipulation.

  • I find that in street fights, if the person does not know wing chun, he is no issue, regardless of size....but then again i am being sued now for turning someone into a parapalegic by breaking their vertibrate under their neck witha throat chop...but i will win because the video tape shows him attacking me. Luckily for me he is also a poor black boy and he is three time smy size.

  • yes size really doesn't matter, street fighters are no match for true martial artists. Though thats good that you protected yourself, normally I'd say try to go a little easier on non martial artists, but Meh self defence is self defence.

  • yeah right htis guy was going ot kill me, i had to take him out.

  • yep, what style do you practice?

  • can remember the lineage ill call my sifu today and find out if i can, he's in chicago.

  • well i meant more of what martial art do you pratice, since you said sifu you practice a chinese martial art. So I'm gonna take a stab at it and go with wing chun, kung fu, or maybe bagua.

  • If you don't think size matters then you've obviously never been in an actual fight.

  • size has nothing to do with anything, the best it will give you is a longer reach. weight matters more, I know for a fact I can take out people larger than myself if needed.

  • Kungfuking166: Is Kamon evolving into a MMA by beginning to incorparate other arts?

I would argue that the idea that Wing Chun needs a bit of work wouldn't be helped by adding to the system. It can only be improved by stripping away elements that are deemed unneccessary without detrimenting the system thus maintaining its effectiveness, how do you expect to elevate WC to its next level by adding to the system? -- there are no advanced techniques in WC, just better use of basics.

  • Good point. In Kamon we have added sparring by use of boxing. This is merely to get the students used to pressure and how to deal with opponents who aren't merely wing chun robots. It is very useful to work on all aspects of the martial arts game, rather than sticking to one game plan. We will never be pro boxers or cage fighters, but we will improve our overalll game.

  • There are lots of inadequate moves in wing chun - hence why it has been changed throughout the years by numerous masters. Kevin Chan is unique in that he is a black belt in BJJ and understands the need for good clinchwork (not chin na which doesn't work). Therefore he has used wing chun principles but also BJJ principles of leverage to work effective clinching. My advice as always is to come down and check it out, whatever level you are at martial arts.

  • awesome !!!

  • Theres emphasis on power by retracting the limb(0.32s)to strike, rather than applying strike/energy from the position your in.I was told by someone who trains Kamon that as well as retracting for strikes u must strike thru. Wouldn't this increase risk of over committing?I feel this slightly diverts from the fundamentals of WC- relaxation & application of energy- & uncommitted techniques.I was told things have changed in how wc is used after BJJ was incorporated can anyone give more info on this?

  • Personally I'd say his Chum Kiu needs to be A LOT softer but I'm not as famous so I could be wrong :p

I was taught to make everything look like it's a single movement and not do breaks in between.

  • going to his new sxchool on thursday. Ive heard good things about him on my MA forum but I've never done martial arts before properly

  • Another excellent Kamon Wing Chun video, top quality-Sihing Steve,Croydon class.

  • without giving surnames away, epsom steve or sutton steve?

  • Epsom Steve, aka Big Steve...

    Why?

  • I currently train at Kamon and have trained in many other wing chun schools, and can say that there is no better instructor in the UK than Master Chan.

That is not to say other chun schools aren't good - I am pleased to live in the UK where the standard of wing chun is extremely high

I just feel that Master Chan has the whole package - given that he is a black belt in BJJ and an extremely proficient kickboxer, he knows the areas where wing chun needs a bit of work

  • Just wonderin, used 2 train with Less Big Steve in Sutton and Anna in Surbiton/Wimbledon, training with Sifu now in Portsmouth. My hip still hurts from when you took me down in a Surbiton session..thats the last time I get cocky n defend against ur bong/lap/chop when it's your turn on the feeding techniques!

  • I'm one of Kevin Chans students for wing chun. Absolutely amazing si-fu the things he can do with his body are mind blowing.

  • I've recently joined a Kamon class and find it highly rewarding. The sifu at my class is awesome.I've just bought 2 Kamon dvd's,Siu Nim Tao and explosive power and it's certainly worth the money and a real eye opener.

  • im also a kamon student master kevin chan in the video shows the small man can win agianst abigger man if the technic is right but it takes practise i also recommend catford its instrutor is bye far 1 of the best instrutor in kamon

  • Looks good - doesn't he train in BJJ too? I recall reading that he's a blackbelt in it or something. Be interesting to see how these arts could combine, or if they share principles at all. Nice clip.

  • he got his black belt, just a few days ago, or a week. i forget its on the website. kamon wing chun . com

  • kevin chan recently got his bjj blackbelt from roger gracie!! so he aint no mug

  • why simulate? just hang around a shitty neighborhood

  • lol...as soon as i read that i immediately thought of jersey...

  • kevin chan is brilliant iv got his explosive power dvd where he talks about the secrets of the one inch punch and its very good..he knows what hes talking about...i would love to go to one of his classes

  • i've been to one of his demos. incredible

  • basingstoke has a great instructor!

  • ofcourse this is choreographed, its edited together different angles like a action movie. But its still not bad. It just demonstrates how wingtsun works

  • I recently joined a Kamon class, and have found it to be most enjoyable and fulfilling. I have yet to have the pleasure of meeting Master Chan, or the honour of training with him, but judging by the quality of his instructors, I'd label the man a true physical genius. I look forward to exploring more of his style.

  • Overall i really liked this video :) I think you did well to get the balance between looking realistic and not acctually hurting your partner. However it would have been nice to see the three guys attack at once when you did the 3 on 1 section.

  • Rhypes99 u donut youd need a bat and two friends

  • this is choreographed - I do not doubt his athletic ability. try that move when someone is coming at you with a baseball bat and you will regret it.

  • it's not choreographed. admittedly, he knew what attack was coming, as he was holding a bat, but the response was instintive and unplanned.

  • im a kamon student. and i give u a challenge! try and find a better instructor. sifu master kevin chan is somthing special!

  • a baseball bat requires a certain amount of distance. if someone trains to even half this dudes level, its not too hard to dodge the first attack in order to get too close for him to use it again. then u can drop a knee, elbow, or headbutt. whatever turns u on.

  • good 'ole sifu :)

  • nice i ve also trained with a guy who i feel is very good! Kevin Chan you are fast i say by watching that clip. nice hand work!

  • whoeva sed they could "whip his butt" they need to know who he is first, he trains with top-ranked boxers and he knows lots of other martial arts along with brazillian ju-jitsu and if u wana fight him ide dare u

  • I cant tell his fighting skills but he stays gorund nailed on the club atack, now I dont realy think that is good thing. But it might be just me.

  • Hi Kamon is one of the best WC schools to learn from. In general the teaching is like second to none! If anyone lives in tooting you should check out Jason Gowans class for a great kamonwingchun practitioner!

  • I'm a fellow tooting kamon student and have to agree with nainesh Jason Gowan's class is hard as nails and a top notch instructor. Definitely recommend the class.

  • that guy is fucking mental, didnt he give a student a black eye once.

    streatham class rocks.

  • was that an endorsement?!!?

  • perfect chan;)

  • The world's fastest hands, fueled by Uncle Sam's double cheeseburger w/ blue cheese dressing, dynamite!

  • I think i could whip his butt. I see his errors and could easily take advantage and manipulate him in a combative situation.

  • you've got no idea what your talking about. go check out one of his classes! see the real deal in person! then come back and comment

  • I used to train with Kamon - I am now in the USA and don't have access to Kamon anymore - however, I will say that Sifu Chan's style and the way him and his instructors teach you how to fight and look after yourself in a street situation is probably the best you'll find anywhere in the world. It's the only thing I miss about living in the UK. Greetings to all fellow Kamon students. Ade.

  • Greetings back.

  • He's also a brown belt in bjj. Pretty well rounded guy.

  • dang... oh well... I guess I will have to use my imagination :) cheers anyway!

  • vid not working... or is it just my dumb ass.. ? :)

  • Sorry but seems to work for everyone else. Must be a prob with yr PC. Bummer.

  • This kicks ass...

  • Kevin Chan world renowned as Chan the man! Which is clearly shown in this video!

  • Kevin Chans wing chun is awesome. Would love to see the second form performed in full!
