A heartbreak really. This goes to show why there needs to be more education about the dangers of huffing butane, and indeed other petroleum based products. By doing this, this caused the premature end of a life that just barely begun to make its mark on the world. God Bless those left behind.
I've seen this episode many times, and it still makes me so sad. I wonder how the family is, I know they never fully recovered, but I still wonder. Momento Mori-Remember Death.
I was also 15 when I first used butane out of a disposable lighter. I told my best friend how cool the effects were, we bought a can of it, and were walking around huffing. Probably 30 minutes later, we ended up getting jumped and robbed, but we kept huffing anyway.
I remember I got to a point where I was staring at a wall, and it felt like everything stopped. The only thing in existance was the feeling, and it was increasing rapidly... When I came down, I vowed to never do that again.
Wow, just wow. Anything that can be said about drug use is right here. This though, is an extreme case of drug use. The chemicals in butane are much, much more toxic than let's say marijuana. Yes, drugs are bad, but not the kind that aren't from a can. Heroine and cocaine, meth etc....horrible...can, will, and has taken lives, but when one labels the use of marijuana as "life ruining", they are completely false. No one has ever died from smoking marijuana, ever.
wait wait....his friend said "if brad didnt die, id probably still be huffing butane".....so the whole, you know, crisis wasnt enough of a lesson? what a douchebag.
How do you huff a gas? Wouldn't it escape and diffuse around the atmosphere if it was just in a paper bag?
Is this like spray paint huffing? (I don't know anything about it either, but I don't necessarily need to because I will NEVER do this because this episode scared the HELL out of me!)
Loosing your best friend and having to live with the guilt of knowing you helped cause it, is something no one should have to go through. Sometimes wanting to impress the popular crowd isn't worth the price you have to pay
Now that is hands down one of if not the most tragic episodes I have ever seen of this show......I work for a commercial EMS system, WTF am I doing watching this.....that is just so dam sad.
I liked watching the reruns on the family channel but I seem to remember another episode or maybe it was a different show where some butane huffers showed up at school. Maybe it was the same kid but a different telling of the story.
The one you're probably thinking of is "Cealent Overdose" from episode 409. In that segment, I think there were 3 teens (two girls and a guy.) They left school during their lunch break, went to the store, got some butane and scotchguard, and inhaled it all the way back to the school. The guy inhaled more than what one of the girls did. He didn't die, but he did have permenant brain damage as a result. and yes, that story was on "Rescue 911."
I did this from the age of 4 untill I was 12.I wnet to rehab.and have been clean for 20 years.I now talk to students now about the dangers of inhalants
No, the show got cancelled in 1996, and re-runs haven't been shown in the USA since 2005. I think Zone Reality in the UK is currently showing re-runs.
I think I listed them all in the older comments to this video, but some of the ones that have been uploaded are: 106-"Baltimore Cops" 109-"Double Football Player" 113-"Puerto Rico" 116-"Amtrak 117-"Church Bus" 119-"Runaway Boxcars" 120-"Boston" 202-"Scuba Cave" 227-"Terror in the Sky" 229-"Denver Chopper" 408-Vegas women's documentary 413-"Oklahoma Cops Documentary" (drive-by shooting) 518-Norweigan organ donor 613-"Repentent Drunk Driver"
What a stupid way to die and put your parents thought all that pain and spend the night in the emergency room to watch you die. And like good parents do, I'm sure they had to go straight to work the same morning and try to keep a straight face.
It really makes me sad about how many people die from things that could easily be prevented. People are using too many harmful drugs these days (tobacco, overdose of alcohol, marijuana, crack, abusing prescription drugs, butane, etc.).
There are some states that have decriminalized it to some degree. In Massachusetts, for example, if you are in possession of less than a certain amount (half an ounce, I think), the maximum penalty is a $100 fine. Also, in Alaska, there is no penalty for possessing a certain small amount in the privacy of your home.
I won't say that marijuana is good for you, but from what i've read, it's no worse than cigarettes or alcohol, which are both legal.
Remember that people also die in the Rescue 911 segments about the Chase, Maryland collision between an Amtrak train and three Conrail locomotives, and the Dupont Plaza Hotel Arson.
OMG I always thought rescue 911 had happy endings!!! Stuff like this terrifies me since I have a 9 year old son...he will be around all that peer pressure soon and I hope like hell I can teach him well and keep him safe.
I feel for the family, as no one should have to loose a child.
However, I have absolutely no sympathy for the boy himself.
Obviously, after hearing the doctor's statements, butane huffing was already a major problem that was out there. Yet he willingly got the butane and huffed anyway.
I have a theory about the effects of the butane entering his body. Butane is a basic hydrocarbon (formula C4H10), and adding outside factors such as body heat and fluids, the oxygen in his body was chemically reacting before it could fully circulate through his body, resulting in asphxiation.
May Bradford Thomas Kaye rest in peace. February 28, 1977-April 12, 1992. This is a heartwrenching story but it is sad that Brad died for everyone to learn a lesson.
he was huffin it wen they were driving round in the car but they didnt actually show it the guy just said it and its a kind of gas..more than tht i dont know but it makes u high i hope tht helps sum...
Just to think if this guy hadn't been commiting this foolish action he would probably be a dad now with a family it just goes to show why u shouldn't do foolish stuff like "huffing" Butane. Because every time u do it u, your betting your life in a card game of mortality and the odds are always stacked against u
They got to him the minute he hit the ground, but he was already an hour into his reaction. The kid says they drove around for an hour huffing butane.
I recently lost a patient in a similar way. Someone was there the minute she went down and professional help arrived 5 minutes later.
Unfortunately, she was almost an hour into her reaction, and she took time release medicine not prescribed to her. Time release drugs have a higher danger of toxicity b/c of how they're released into the system.
That happened with one of my friends . One of my friends just collapsed . My friends were screaming because he didn't look like he was breathing . He went to the mergency room and recovered completely . He had a stroke .
i have huffed before but i never knew the dangers. this is why they desperately need to bring this show back bc ppl learn from it and ppl can learn wht to do in a serious situation.
Only by the race of God I survived my own stupid stunts. No matter what the High or Drug involved, a minute of pleasure is NEVER worth what it robs from you, and especially your life. DEATH IS A LONG TERM SOLUTION TO A SHORT TERM PROBLEM.
teenagers need to be taught thats it ok and cool to stand up for yourself and not do everything your friends do. its cool to have respect for yourself even if your friends don't respect themselves. its cool to say no to drugs. not just the street kind either.
Even though he made a mistake, he was still a wonderful person who was taken too young. My heart goes out to him and his family.. And to everyone who may be considering doing these drugs and chemicals, PLEASE reconsider the consequences. May he rest in peace..
This video is heartbreaking. NEVER DO DRUGS. I am serious. Please take my words. It will eventually do dammage if not do fatal dammage. PLEASE take this video and NEVER do drugs. PLEASE.
Actually this seems like a very unlikely thing to kill you unless it acts similarly to carbon monoxide in which it is competitive with oxygen in hemoglobin. If thats the case... it seems unlikely that it would make you high. It would just suffocate you.
I'll stick to real drugs thanks. Suffocation != high. :)
Now, "everybody" is having this thing called pharm parties, which is where users put their hand in a bowl of pills-of all varieties-and take everything they bring forth.
That gives us virtually no chance to save them from an overdose. Not knowing what combination of pills they took, nor how much of each drug they consumed, we can hardly be expected to have the right antidote for it.
This is the saddest Rescue 911 episode I ever watched :( I remember years ago that I read an article online that Brad's father took the butane manufacturers to court and lost
this shocked the hell out of me i didnt think he would die but im glad they showed this so people can see that life is not always happy endings and you have to take care of yourself and be more careful
During my first month of being an EMT, one of the veteran paramedics told me people only learn lessons after they've been injured. At the time, I found his statement rather harsh but unfortunately discovered its truth as I spent more time working on the life squad.
BTW, all these people commenting judgmentally toward the victims of this incident would never last in ambulance work.
Just an opinion from someone who works in the profession.
They contributed to his death not in the manner you suggest, but by peer pressure tactics to do something crazy. I wonder about some peoples intelligence these days, kids, and people here who try to make these friends of his seem innocent. Because they didn't try to STOP him they contributed to Brad's death and therefore are accomplices to murder. I would charge them as such and had them tried as adults and put in adult prisons for a long time, plus being haunted by a permanent criminal record.
Because supposedly I support "incompetent parenting", which appears to be RogueKnight12866's biggest pet peeve. For example, I don't think the parents from the following Rescue 911 segments should be put in jail and have their children permanently revoked for neglect:
Why would you huff Butane? You might as well light a pipe bomb in your mouth. However this a a great show, I also enjoy Seconds from Disaster which deals with larger scale emergency's. Good job on uploading all these episodes.
I'm glad you have no say in the world. What good will putting these kids in jail do? Zero. What harm will it do? Well it'll fuck up the kids' lives and it'll cost us money too, so a lot.
These kids lives should've been ruined. They contributed to their friend's death and they'll be paying the price, either here or in eternity before Him, just like people like you and DorvellTStewart. This person tries to block me, he will be sued.
no they didn't. They didn't put a gun to his head and say 'huff butane or die'. If you went out drinking with your friends and one of them died of alcohol poisoning, should you all be charged with murder? You're just being vengeful by saying these kids should be punished; they probably already feel TOO guilty.
Earfetish, I wouldn't waste too much time arguing with RogueKnight12866. He leaves a lot of ridiculous comments like that (for example, saying parents should be sentenced to death for minor oversights). If he threatens to sue for "opposing" him, keep doing it, becuase he's not going to sue you. And even if he tried, the judge would just laugh at him and tell him to get out.
They didn't, "Just let him die." They did everything they could to save his life! It just wasn't enough! Yes, this story is sad, but there's also a great lesson to be learned from it.
is this like one of the only eps where someone died? so much for "rescue" 911. wow...huffing is like the most bone headed form of doing drugs...eesh. I mean when I was young, did'nt know I was doing myself harm...I would walk by the window air condiioner in the summer, and sniff the air coming out and it felt good...like I guess its freon or whatever...my husband tells me now...omg you were huffing! thats freon you could die!
I remember seein' this when it aired...and some time later like in the spring or summer of 94', one of my next door neighbor's kids died from sniffin' paint....
I wish we could take teenagers to mental and physical rehab centers where teens have to live thru trying to pull their lives back together. Then they would learn I hope.
Oh yeah! That'll really decrease the number of people doing this stuff. Stuff goes on at Private Schools as well as in Public Schools. I should know. I go to a Private College!
Explain what'll happen to those kids who's parrents shelter them from the world their entire lives. What do you think will happen when those kids are turned loose and sent off to College or something?
Harperusa, I agree with you in total. To allgood2000 and DorvellTStewart, your opinions are reversed and my own and harperusa's opinions affirm the opinion of steeliesin07. Those kids with Brad are responsible as co-accomplices to murder. I would charge them as such and see to it they did hard time.
You know, RogueKnight12866, I'd love to respond to your statement with a logical argument or something to that extent, but I've dealt with enough morons to know that there's no hope of appealing to you with reason. Keep commenting though, the rest of us love laugh at them. Also, I don't like the way your mom's face is constructed.
A heartbreak really. This goes to show why there needs to be more education about the dangers of huffing butane, and indeed other petroleum based products. By doing this, this caused the premature end of a life that just barely begun to make its mark on the world. God Bless those left behind.

It's very distressing to treat young patients, who have done this to themselves.
BTW a parent's grief is like no other pain. This boy's parents, even all these years later, do not need to hear that their son did something stupid.
I wish people would realize that the boy's family members probably watch this video-and refrain from making such comments.

butane huffing? what is that? some one want to explain
hollysgirl3 3 years ago
That's when people inhale lighter fluid fumes to get high.
allgood2000 2 years ago
A month ago, we lost a patient to a combination drug & alcohol overdose. He was 15 and died a week before Christmas.
There's little we can do when people insist on attending 'pharm' parties, taking handfuls of pills whose origin is unknown even to the users.

MsEndo420 3 years ago 36
No, not by any means.
DorvellTStewart 3 years ago 27
no in the pilot episode someone died
earnhardtlivesE 2 years ago
according to wiki pedia 14 episodes someone died
1sick95venge 2 years ago
Wikipedia is incorrect, there were more than 20 where someone died. I listed them all in the early comments to this video.
allgood2000 2 years ago
no there are 3 more episodes.

i just realised at the end of the video that brad was 1 week older than me...he would be 32 next month.

he is 22 months older than me.

This is a very sad story. It breaks my heart when I see stories about teens doing dangerous things like Huffing Butane or whatever.

this shocked the hell out of me i didnt think he would die but im glad they showed this so people can see that life is not always happy endings and you have to take care of yourself and be more careful

i would never use i couldn't do that to my family i love them 2 much

During my first month of being an EMT, one of the veteran paramedics told me people only learn lessons after they've been injured. At the time, I found his statement rather harsh but unfortunately discovered its truth as I spent more time working on the life squad.
BTW, all these people commenting judgmentally toward the victims of this incident would never last in ambulance work.
Just an opinion from someone who works in the profession.

DIE TO THAT MURDERER
FullMetalNinja001 3 years ago
Why didn't that SOB who gave that young boy a butane go to prison?
FullMetalNinja001 3 years ago
How do you know he wasn't the one who bought it?
allgood2000 3 years ago
If someone died in a drunk driving accident when you send a person that bought them drinks to prison?
This is a very sad story.
Not everyone dies from huffing, just like not every drinker is an alcoholic.
melcher 3 years ago 4
Butane isn't a controlled substance, and the kid chose to do this to himself. It was unfortunate, but the only one responsible was the one who died.
1Faith1Fate 3 years ago 3
i agree with you, but sometimes teens and even older people do dumb shit, it still very sad.
scientologyisnuts 3 years ago 18
They contributed to his death not in the manner you suggest, but by peer pressure tactics to do something crazy. I wonder about some peoples intelligence these days, kids, and people here who try to make these friends of his seem innocent. Because they didn't try to STOP him they contributed to Brad's death and therefore are accomplices to murder. I would charge them as such and had them tried as adults and put in adult prisons for a long time, plus being haunted by a permanent criminal record.
RogueKnight12866 3 years ago
do you know what 'murder' actually means?
earfetish 3 years ago 5
Murder with malice aforethought
RogueKnight12866 3 years ago
Murder requires intent to cause death. Criminal negligence causing death.
del0griffith 3 years ago 5
If you'll excuse me, I got something actually worthwhile to do. Working for the homeless. Try it sometime.
RogueKnight12866 3 years ago
you seem to have problems; why do you hate the owner of these videos so much?
earfetish 3 years ago 3
Because supposedly I support "incompetent parenting", which appears to be RogueKnight12866's biggest pet peeve. For example, I don't think the parents from the following Rescue 911 segments should be put in jail and have their children permanently revoked for neglect:
304H- "Fire Ant Trauma"
427 - "Bucket Drown Baby"

Brad may he rest in peace I know he will be missed.
anamallover 3 years ago 3
You are right, may he rest in peace. Even if he did contribute to his own death I hope he finds the peace in death he never had in life.
RogueKnight12866 3 years ago
Why would you huff Butane? You might as well light a pipe bomb in your mouth. However this a a great show, I also enjoy Seconds from Disaster which deals with larger scale emergency's. Good job on uploading all these episodes.

This is an episode that almost made me cry. :'(
speedmovies 3 years ago 2
those kids should be put in jail for murder i mean they let it happen and they should be held responbule for it
steeliesin07 3 years ago
No one made anyone else huff butane. It was Brad's choice to do it, and the others were not responsible for his decision.
allgood2000 3 years ago
Your wright!
pug6666 3 years ago
I'm glad you have no say in the world. What good will putting these kids in jail do? Zero. What harm will it do? Well it'll fuck up the kids' lives and it'll cost us money too, so a lot.
RIP Brad.
earfetish 3 years ago 7
These kids lives should've been ruined. They contributed to their friend's death and they'll be paying the price, either here or in eternity before Him, just like people like you and DorvellTStewart. This person tries to block me, he will be sued.
RogueKnight12866 3 years ago
no they didn't. They didn't put a gun to his head and say 'huff butane or die'. If you went out drinking with your friends and one of them died of alcohol poisoning, should you all be charged with murder? You're just being vengeful by saying these kids should be punished; they probably already feel TOO guilty.
earfetish 3 years ago 7
Earfetish, I wouldn't waste too much time arguing with RogueKnight12866. He leaves a lot of ridiculous comments like that (for example, saying parents should be sentenced to death for minor oversights). If he threatens to sue for "opposing" him, keep doing it, becuase he's not going to sue you. And even if he tried, the judge would just laugh at him and tell him to get out.
allgood2000 3 years ago
He reminds me a lot of Nancy Grace.
DorvellTStewart 3 years ago 2
You're an idiot.
TwistedSister09 2 years ago
yeah real smart just let him die this is one of the most saddest endings to rescue 911
planetgardenland 3 years ago
They didn't, "Just let him die." They did everything they could to save his life! It just wasn't enough! Yes, this story is sad, but there's also a great lesson to be learned from it.
DorvellTStewart 3 years ago
is this like one of the only eps where someone died? so much for "rescue" 911. wow...huffing is like the most bone headed form of doing drugs...eesh. I mean when I was young, did'nt know I was doing myself harm...I would walk by the window air condiioner in the summer, and sniff the air coming out and it felt good...like I guess its freon or whatever...my husband tells me now...omg you were huffing! thats freon you could die!
pika23 3 years ago
It should be noted that huffing any substance can cause death, its not just butane. The choking game is no different.
ChiefPO10490 3 years ago
This video should be played in schools all over the world and used as a shock tactic.

DorvellTStewart 3 years ago
Oh yeah, another thing. Don't blame schools for the choices people make!

Be the judge of whatever the fuck you want, but it's still about the choices of an individual!
DorvellTStewart 3 years ago

DorvellTStewart 3 years ago
Harperusa, I agree with you in total. To allgood2000 and DorvellTStewart, your opinions are reversed and my own and harperusa's opinions affirm the opinion of steeliesin07. Those kids with Brad are responsible as co-accomplices to murder. I would charge them as such and see to it they did hard time.
RogueKnight12866 3 years ago
You know, RogueKnight12866, I'd love to respond to your statement with a logical argument or something to that extent, but I've dealt with enough morons to know that there's no hope of appealing to you with reason. Keep commenting though, the rest of us love laugh at them. Also, I don't like the way your mom's face is constructed.
