Taken from Wikipedia: Their 1997 performance of "Ashes to Ashes" on the show (TOTP) featured Robin Guy (of the band Sack Trick) on drums instead of their actual drummer. He apparently wore a "Puffy" mask as a joke in reference to Faith No More's actual drummer, Mike "Puffy" Bordin. Mike Patton can be seen giving Guy the finger during the performance, supposedly because the mask fell off (or was taken off on purpose) as soon as the performance started.
@humpterthompson Robin Guy, I should check him out, he's actually a very good drummer. Obviously used as a stand in on this playback performance on TOTP, but that doesn't write him off.
@humpterthompson Worst drummer? You do realise that's not actually him you can hear playing? This is Top of the Pops, Patton is singing live and the rest are miming over a backing track.
any1 that knows anything about fnm will know that after fnm finished the song they would not shut up whilst the slag girls were trying to do their bit... mike patton kept shouting over them.. i remember i watched this live...the slag girls got real flusstered whilst trying to read the lines cuz mike patton was taking the piss in the background. fnm rock!!
This is bullshit. What a great atmosphere to play in with a live crowd. But pre-recorded? That shit doesn't make sense. They should have done what the Doors did at Ed Sullivan and just done their thing but with profanity and then got arrested. Sales would have soared.
hahaha i bet they were all just so pissed off after this, you can see it on all their faces, Jon Looks like he's going to throw his guitar at all the pop kids and mike isn't able to sing properly because its pre-recorded haha fucking TOP OF THE POPS!
Hmm wonder why Puffy wasn't there? Unless he was doin the Ozzfest at this time (he was doing double duty playin with Ozzy solo and 3/4 of Black Sabbath that year) someone posted on here that he had a falling out with Patton and that's why he isn't on here.
Funny the Spice Girls are introducing him, and that Posh Spice had a thing for Mike Patton..haha
I met Robin Guy last week, he basically said Mike Bordin didn't agree with the whole TOTP thing and didn't want to mime. Patton was just taking the piss saying we don't need you to do this, so they hired Robin and made him wear a Puffy mask which fell off as soon as they started which is why Patton gives him the finger at 0:55 seconds. True story
faith no more are a deadly band.i love there music so much.its so powerful.check out a band called jekyll and their song bone crunching kick to the head and their song animals.they kickass as well.faith no more and jekyll are two drugs i like to abuse.
"Hey guys, can you all pretend, Mike you go ahead n sing tho, gotta give the show at least some credibility!" Bahahaha. hell funny that puffy isnt even there.
Man someone shoot that Victoria Beckham, what a fkn tool.
Guys, top of the pops IS playback. Always has been. Check out Nirvana on the show not plaing anything, but the music is still going on. The only thing that is Live is the vocal...
Nope, not drums, either. They just play along. Sometimes (especially in the case of grohl) you can hear them playing slightly out of time, because they are hitting them so hard. It's funny. Puffy isn't playing drums here, and i'm guessing it's because he's a man of integrity, and wouldn't want to "pretend" ;)
I've been to top of the pops a few times, people do play live sometimes! but this fnm sounds awful. Robin Guy is one of my favourite musicians though. ;P
Singing OVER a playback, didn't say that he was not singing... Just look at the guitars, there are not plugged and everything sounds exactly just like on the album ( and Mike Bordin is not even there ).
well maybe... but fact is the FNM sounded a lot like they sound on the record when playin live.. except sometimes, the guitars or bass or drums had more presence
I know, I've seen lots of live videos but this one is definitely a playback. Just look at the drummer ( it is pretty obvious ) and listen to the guitar solo : sounds exactly like on the album ( while he usually screws it, look at the other videos of Ashes to Ashes ). Also there are no pedalboards on stage, absolutely nothing but the instruments and ampliphiers. Finally, it is known for a fact that no band ever plays live on Top of the pops ;)
Yes, he was. It was Jim Martin who was long gone by then. I saw FNM in Sydney in one of their final shows for the Album of the Year tour and Puffy was definitely there...

This was a direct dig at having to Mime.

Bloody great vocal. Almost as good as when then did Digging The Grave on TOTP (when the audience almost looked stunned!).
Miming over a backing track isn't perfect but it does sometimes lead to outstanding vocal performances like when Bowie did Heroes on TOTP.
