I have such a great deal of respect for vaulters. Not only is it dangerous, but you have to be really strong, and concentrated and you have to have a VERYYY good horse for it.
@Sanchara how can you say this is not dangerous? Doing gymnastics on a cantering horse?? It's one of the riskiest things you can do. Can you do some of the moves they do? Ha, didn't think so.
@equestrianracer604 Due to the safety training we do, and other factors such as horses and facilities it is actually statistically one of the safest sports. Safer even than soccer, baseball or playing on a playground.
I am a certified coach in vaulting, and have been competing internationally since 2009. :) I don't do team tho- but thats just because I like individual better. You have more creative freedom and stuff.
It is really amazing that this horse maintained the exact same tempo and cadence at the canter for nearly 5 minutes and stayed on exactly the same circle all while having vaulters jump on and off of him (or her) and vaulting all over him (or her). Just amazing.
@breyercowgirl64 Actually SnowFire337 is right, it takes a great deal of work to get a horse that well trained to let people to be doing that on its' back and not only that but the strength to hold up 3 people at once. Yeah they don't have big heavy saddles on but those 2 extra bodies still have to be pretty hard on that horse, if I were a horse I wouldn't be that ok with people jumping on and off of me like that! To imagine how well trained that horse is compared to a wild stallion just crazy!
Yes equestrian vaulters do appreciate there horses. You don't see it but I would bet a million dollars this horse was given tons of pets and love after. The horse is not a prop. Without a horse vaulting would not be vaulting. So the horses are well cared for and respected.
To answer the question 2 before my comment: believe it or not when it comes to vaulting the helmet actually gets in the way. Most vaulters have safety training and learn to fall as safe as they possibly can if it comes down to a fall. The helmet would throw a vaulter off balance during moves. And in neck moves they would not be possible to do with a helmet.
@fifigaf the reason I heard was that the risk of hitting yourself in the head was lower than the risk of your helmet causing an arm or something to get stuck and make you go off balance. That's what my coach says but who knows.
Wow my sisiter is gym crazy and i ALEAYS show her horse videos she was like 'NOT ANOTHER HORSE VID GEORGE' But now she watches these all the time. There AMAZING! Talk about GUTSY!
well, that horse is a fine size for team. they really aren't that big, the team i mean, and they are all gold or silver vaulters so they know how to carry themselves. and devon wouldn't pick a horse that he thinks is too small. you don't need a ginormous horse to do team. btw, you should really learn how to spell draft.
you know, I'm all for warmbloods for individual, but I really don't think it's a good idea for a horse that small to be carying a team that large.
theres no way he's even 17.2 which is the smallest my coach would ever let me compete on as an individual. Team needs to go to the draughts. They're more trustworthy and you can eaily find ones that are 18.2 or bigger like they need to be to carry a team comprised primarily of adults.
They are so amazing!! I saw them do their freestyle at Nationals last year and everyone was like standing there with there mouths open! The littlest girl is only about 4'8"

Everyone watches the vaulters and yes it takes a TON Of talent to do this. But no one ever thinks about how well trained that horse has to be.

I have a question, do they actually have a bond with the horse or care for the horse or care about the horse or do they treat it like a prop?
AWildMusicSoul 7 months ago
idk i think i'd rather just watch normal gymnastics.

Just out of curiosity...why don't they have to wear helmets?
I'm an instructor and know nothing about vaulting...maybe someone who does it could help?
