Im from Allentown PA and I moved down to SC this past summer...It was so hard trying to explain to these folks down here some of my dutchy lingo...and another interesting thing is they do NOT get my sarcastic sense of humor...
I pretty much talk the same way you do. . . I was born in Harrisburg PA and lived there all my life. I got made fun of by my brothers who were both born in Maryland. . .
I was born, raised, and still reside in Harrisburg and your accent is pretty much identical to mine, with only a couple exceptions. Namely, I say roof with a long U (e.g. "rewf"), data with a long a (e.g. "date-uh"), and Reese's Pieces as "Reese-iz Peace-iz" (e.g. These pieces belong to Reese, they're Reese's Pieces). Although, I know plenty of people that say Reese-eez Peace-eez, I think it's a Pennsylvania thing that I just don't happen to use.
I'm also from eastern pennsylvania, like wilkes-barre area, I think the words that were picked weren't a good representation of accent lol, like I don't know about you but I say twunny not twenty...heres a good website, I know you didn't pick the words but it might help whoever did coalregion com / speak
Awwehh , You say Reeces Pieces so cute! X3 I`m from Lancaster Pennslyvania. Do you also use the words doplich , macadem , and outen in the part your from?
I say that stuff that way too! I'm from western Pa!
@albino18perfection don't worry about being from another state. Good Luck at Penn State! Great college! I actually had a girl from California in one of my classes this year only at a different college in Pa. It was pretty cool to listen to how different her life was compared to ours. :) Good luck!
I have noticed slight accent changes within the state itself. Western pa people point out some of the odd way's i say my words, opposed to east central pa. it's funny.
sweet. I'm from California and am going to Penn State next year, and was really worried about having an accent. But I really won't have much of one. :D yay. this made me feel better. thanks.
@albino18perfection definitely don't worry about an accent! i think people here love accents anyways and we make fun of our own accent so you definitely don't have to worry about people saying stuff about your accent. i have some friends that go to penn state main and they say they love it there so have a great timee!!
I'm from Eastern PA and I actually say a lof of these words differently than you. I just thought it was interesting how there can be differences even within the same part of the state. Cool idea. Take care!
I'm originally from Massachusetts. When I moved to central Pennsylvania (Harrisburg, Carlisle etc.), I lost my Boston accent and started talking in a central Pennsylvanian accent. And i've been talking that way ever since I moved back to New England. Strange isn't it?
@military123456 not quite sure, if you know a new york accent and compare eastern PA then compare central PA, central will sound less like new york cause it's further away but otherwise i dont know anything else about it!
@tfraud when i visited tennessee a while back i started to pick up a southern accent! but i lost it when i came back :P i think when you "adapt" to your surroundings then you'd pick up the accent as well :)
So is it onyl pennsylvanians that say "you guys"? cause im from eastern pa too and i always say that and thought it was normal. but i dont say "youse guys"
@NickJonasFansite101 probably, i say you guys ALL the time but never says youse guys. i think maybe it's a steryotype of hearing "you guys" which people arent accustomed to plus the pennsylvania accent they hear more of a "youse guys" when we hear "you guys"? just a suggestion :P
I'm from northeast PA too! I have to say though, we totally say "youse guys". Actually "you guys" I hear more I think but once in awhile you get the youse guys haha. My dad says things weird like house, its like a PA dutch thing, I don't even know how to spell it like he says it haha.
@KtotheY77 lmao..he prolly says it like haus..im from the lebano, hershey area so i talk like that to...when my mom says hour she says it like haur.idk its weird haha
@KtotheY77 i think a lot of people swallow vowels in PA, like, talk more with their throats if you know what i mean so maybe that's it? like when we say scranton its more like screntin.
whats even funnier is going into the eastern pa neighborhoods and youll hear the same word said differently...alot of philly people say RADDEEATOR for radiator....
yeah, it's really weird! also depends on if you're more north or south too because philly is east like scranton (obviously a bit more east) but they sound pretty different when you compare them! so nifty !! :}
@Daan088 that's really interesting actually cause a lot of people say that we swallow vowels, skip letters or say the word completely not-annunciating any letters so that's so neat to hear that someone actually thinks we speak clearly! :D
I'm originally from Long Island (New York) and our accents are pretty close (except maybe pecan and data). I say tour the same way you do but the people on Long Island say it like "Tou-uh."
Also I am going to college in Columbia County, PA and have yet to hear that accent where people say "Youse guys." Does that accent even exist or is that just people being ignorant?
yeah, the only difference i hear in NY accents are "oh" or "ah" sounds. and i don't ever hear people say youse guys, pretty much ever. it's pretty stereotypical but funny to us because no one says it ! or at least now no one does, maybe in the past people have but it doesn't sound like it to me. if you go a bit more east to scranton (near me) you might hear something slightly like it but it's usually way over-exaggerated :]
Hey there interesting video im portuguese and i guess i kinda have a little accent going on butttt yeah dont have a video camera and my camera sucks it dies so quickly....errr but anywho i wanted to say in my opinion(plz dont take this is a bad way) i think u should have side swept bangs i think ud look greattt the bangs like you have kinda make your face look tiny because theres just so much going on but anywho just my opinion =)
I was wondering if people would think I have an accent. I live in central PA, and I say the words the same way you do.
We likely have influences from the PA dutch.. There are some people around here who say things like "Yours'in's".. it's weird. Sometimes I wonder if younger people like myself and you have accents influenced by TV as much as real life people.. I mean the younger you are, the more likely you were raised by a TV, so those voices would factor into how you learn to speak.
i think most of PA would sound the same with the exception of a few words cause i know that some western PA people say "washer" way different. i think TV probably has a big influence, or what kind of accent the people around you have. like you my have been born in liverpool but have southern accent cause you were raised in texas or something!
