thanks for the videos ! I was at Spang from 85 - 87..... thumbs up if you ever ate at Kinito's Pizza in downtown Spangdahlem...... it's not there anymore unfortunately.
@lydian77 yeah, unfortunately at the time I was only 20 years old and spent too much time partying and not enough time actually enjoying the country and all the sights. I spent alot of time at a nightclub by the name of "Yvettes" run by a retired Air Force CMS and his german wife (Yvette, of course).....
Thanks for the (literal) trip down Memory Lane. 81-83, I was in the Crew Chief (AGS) dorm right after the 4 Seasons & chow hall, hadn't seen it since then. Went back in 88 to visit a friend stationed there and was amazed by all the construction (they now had a Burger King!) Can't even imagine what it looks like now.
Was there 93-95 & for vacation in 2009. A lot has changed since this was made. There are now rotaries where B-50 meets that road by Spang, the gate you drove through is totally gone, the one replacing it is by the CRS "castle" and rarely used. CBPO was education office. That BMW @2:30 was (maybe is) the same kind I had, O-Club gone, road divert is gone (now 2 way), p.o. was legal, dorm in work was CE, . You should see Spang now, you wouldn't believe all the construction since this was made.
Back in '70 I rode the approximately 10 clicks between Bitburg and Spang on my bicycle both ways. Those hills in the middle were heaven or hell depending on where you were on them. Thanks for posting.
I lived in the crew chief barracks - in '79 it was the last building on the right as you approach the chapel, just past the four season store. The large tree just before the building used to be the "short tree" - tradition was the night before PCS'ing crew chiefs would toss their boots in the tree. The AF Chief of Staff was coming through and they thought it was a good idea to remove all boots. I was the first person to throw my boots back into the tree before PCS'ing to Eglin. Thanks. Good vid!
The Gate Gaurd name is Terry Henderson, reason I know is because I am sitting inside the gate shack. Terry or Franapple if you see this meaasge email at dbc2341@yahoo.com.
The year of all this stuff was 1976. Jimmy Carter was President, Margret Thatcher was PM, and Helmut Schmidt was Chancellor. I had a lot of fun times in Trier also. Excellent video guys until you went by the Chow Hall and toward the Chapel I really do not recognize the place.
We also had a plane crash unfortunately the pilot and copilot did not survive. When the plane came down it flipped on its side and the guys ejected into the trees. The German Conservation Department came out and measured the diameter of the trees destroyed and billed the US for the projected loss of board production. We also had a demonstration of the A-10 Warthog, damned quiet plane on the ground you never heard them approaching, The ordinance would kil you before you knew what happened.
Continuing - i got a rather irate Mess Sargent trying to take me to task. I told him too bad YOU were not the person who got sick. During that first meal I noticed lip and finger prints on ALL of the glassware I was told by one of the cooks that they had ran out of soap for the dishwashers and that they were ok because they had been scalded I then chose a sealed carton of milk. That was one of the many fun memories I have. My barrack was diagonal from the chow hall going toward the Chapel.
WOW! This brings back memories. You mentioned the "NEW" 2 million dollar chowq hall, my experience in the old one was one day one of the cooks did not wash their hands after using toilet, one soldier another airman and myself came down with Hepititus. I was in Bitburg Hospital for 45 days. My first meal at the chow hall was Chicken ala King on rice when I loaded my fork with food I noticed it had a pice of STAINLESS STEEL scouring pad in it. I made my complaint on the complaint forms.
Was stationed there at the same time from 87-91. I too drove to the main gate with my video camera and the sp told me to turn it off, it wasn't permitted. As you drove from Bitrburg, I was hoping I would see my '72 Mercedes drive by you. I don't have my video of Spang. but my ex-wife does.
I think I remember "skinny". I, too, was a security policeman. It is funny to hear you lampooning the cops, but all in good jest. Thanks for the brief but nice video.
This brought back memories. I was at Spang from 68-71. It still looks basically the same, except for the new barracks. I had a great time there. Thanks for the memories!
Wow that takes me back. I thought this was a recent video until I noticed everything was how I remembered it back in 88. Now here is the real shocker.... The guy walking by the chappel right next to my old dorm was me. That's really cool guys.
I was stationed at Spang from 1957 to 1959 and then went to Bitburg from 1959 to 1961. A lot of Spang was the same as it was when I was there. The gas station is the same. older dorms are the same. Motorpool shop and supply whse are the same, as well as the officers club. I played country music there. Thanks for the video.
The Good old days!! I miss Germany!!! got out of the AF and moved to Amsterdam but now my dutch wife and I are back here in america.. Worst mistake I ever made!!! (moveing back here)

Its funny, that in 1988, you refer to Spangdahlem as an "Air Force Base", when in fact, there are only "air bases" in Europe.
