never fails everytime I see this, I cry because I remember how incredibly awesome it was to see it on Broadway back in 1999 and of course then, I bawled like a baby. SO beautiful !
Its more than like, its LOVE!!! I absolutely ADORE this musical!! I have only seen it once, at the Mandalay Bay, but im going to make it my business to hopefully someday see it on Broadway, because that has been a dream of mine since August, when i first heard of this musical!
How creative how the animal costumes are made. Especially the couchar and giraf. Very beautifull. Making a musical about animals without using animals... Well, that is what I call a challenge. wow.
the lion king, i saw it last year at christmas, best theatre experience i have ever had, i watched it wth this face: :O. the whole thing was incredible, something i would definantly see again, and again after that!
i saw this musical when it came to melbourne, it is still the best musical i have ever seen in all my life... and i have seen a fair amount... the costumes are amazing, the singing is amazing, the whole thing is just AMAZING... not to mention STUNNING :D
Just one question. what makes you ppl cry when you see this? It makes me happy , appreciating life , the biodiversity on earth and human spirituality. What makes you cry here? is it just touching in how good it is and powerful? or do you cry because we kill theese animals and destroy this beautiful planet?.
@EtrajbHD I think most people cry at this it's so powerful and amazing- the music and costumes, dancing, sets- everything is overwhelming and just wonderful to behold, absolutely joyous and beautiful, touching and stunning,
@EmilyChesterton it made me cry! mainly because The Lion King was my first ever film, and i grew up with it as my favourite ever film, i'd watch it constantly. i still love it to this day, so when my family took me and my sisters to see it for a christmas present it was so overwhelming i just cried! the whole thing is so amazingly clever its simply spellbinding!
@EtrajbHD Well I never thought about how we kill these majestic creatures without so much as a thought about it. But the mastery to this is astounding!
has anyone happened to see the current cast as well as the original cast, or least have a good reference point. i'm just curious about how well the talent stacks up, as i will be taking my fiance to see it as a christmas gift.
@ElphabaWickedGlinda Nah, Wicked's better! Miles better! The Lion King has good costumes and music but Wicked definetely has the wow factor with special effects, music, costumes and basically everything! It's outstanding!
I had the great privilege of seeing this live in May. This was one of the best musical I've ever seen. I cried from the sheer amazingness of it. If you ever have an oppotunity to see it live, do it. beyond worth it.
Let me just say that the opening to the Lion King is probably one of the most beautiful, amazing sequences in all of the history of broadway musicals. I mean when I was watching it for the first time (a while ago) I was like "OMG I don't even need to see the rest. I got my money worth just from watching the opening" Amazing show even after all these years!
this was my first Broadway show. saw it in 2006 and i was in the 3rd row center.... the BEST Broadway show I've ever seen. and i have seen a lot. it is amazing (its still on Broadway right?)
@notyouraveragething It's a good bet The Lion King will be playing on Broadway for years. It still averages over 99 percent capacity and grosses over $1.4 million a week (second only to Wicked). Since the stage musical began, Disney has grossed well over 3 billion dollars from The Lion King. How ironic that Julie Taymor (who is the genius behind Lion King on Broadway) may ultimately be remembered for the flop that is Spiderman
Can't believe it's been 12 years since this performance, seems like I can remember it like it was last year. Took me seven years to finally see the show (caught it in 2004 in San Francisco) and I was blown away. I can honestly say the opening scene is the greatest opening of any Broadway show.
(I had the chance to see it the previous year in New York but chose Phantom - that was a tough choice.)
now at the beginning like the first minute is that random words they saying or just another launguage ive been listening to this music for my whole life and i still dont get if this is another language
I actually saw this on Valentines 2010...the best $82 I ever spent! I saw it in Bushnell, Hartford, CT though...a few differences...costumes were exactly the same, but at the Bushnell they had a real Pride Rock, and the dance setup was different.
I remember first seeing this show when I was eight. Now 10 years later I still watch the entire show wide eyed and excited. This just shows how timeless not only the story is, but also how well Julie Taymour's directing brought this into a form that all age groups could love
No. This is the first cast, but the show would have been performed a good few times before the Tony Awards. The show would have opened within a year of this performance though.
man... ppl say this rafiki is better than thsidi manye but i disagree... i may be biased but what ever... current lion king will demolish orig. except the kids
I need to see this again. I saw it in 2001 and haven't seen it since. After seeing the tony performance last year i told myself I would see it again, but forgot until finding this video...I NEED to see it again this summer.
I saw this on Broadway during March on a school trip to the East Coast and everyone there agreed that it was an amazing production and if you ever see it,it is one of those things you'll never forget.
no offense, i love the original broadway cast of the lion king better than the others. they wonderful and talented too, but the 1997 broadway cast will always be the best.

I love this video. this song is one of my favorite in the movie. when I saw the Lion King in Chicago on Broadway I heard this song. I love this version better.
I LOVED THIS SO MUCH THAT AT THE END I CRIED THAT I WISH IT WENT ON FOREVER.
