Really interesting scene.

The funny thing is, right after Hurley and Charlie go and get the whisky, and Hurley says that the only thing Locke knows about is "knives and fishing". Without this scene, that makes no sense, because at no point other than here have we seen him fish.

Now that I think about it, it may be a little bit too dark for the series... Lost is full of hope too.

not really lazy. Just a last little effect that would take 5 seconds to film if it needed to be filmed. The producers decided to scrap the scene before that fish pile was filmed so no need to actually film it.
