Thanks for this video. I bought a security screwdriver bit on eBay, and I open my games and clean with alcohol to remove dirt, then use a white pencil eraser to remove tarnish. I bought a new 72pin connector for the NES and I keep games in a plastic box to reduce air circulation which decreases tarnishing. Remember, if you have a favorite game and the back half of the cartridge is ugly, you can take the back half of a very common cheap game and swap them, then sell/donate/gift the unwanted one.
My tip for getting NES games to work, if they're just not booting, is to gently BREATHE SOME WARM BREATH INTO THE SLOT OF THE GAME, then insert. Voila! Works better than the cleaning seemed to for me. I guess the little bit of moisture from my breath makes the connection successful! It works!
@muzboz The method you just decribes does long term irreparable damage to the cartridge and also the console's connectors as the moist from your mouth promotes corrosion. I say this cos I care. STOP BLOWING ON YOUR CARTRIDGES.
Thank you for the tip to get the marker marks off the games! Personally, I believe the best way to clean the contacts is to open up the cartridge by using the special bit you can easily buy on eBay. Then you take a rag, put some Brasso on it and just really scrub those contacts. Make sure when you're done that you wipe off all of the Brasso on the contacts and the stuff that may have gotten on the board. This made 3 games that didn't work all work like new again.
DO NOT USE WATER. THEY WILL RUST THE CONTACTS AND DAMAGE THE MOTHERBOARD. Rubbing alchlohol leaves a residue on the contacts also. Use at LEAST glass cleaner.
my nes game will work, but when i turn it on, lines are all across the screen, but it will play for a bit. whenever i enter a door in the game, it freezes, what do i do, i tred cleaning it so many times, it wont work right :(
@cabooseaholic try turning the system off and moving the cart side to side. if that doesnt work id say the game isnt sitting well on the connector. while the game may be clean the connector inside the system may be dirty or the pins may be worn so the game isnt making good contact. try looking on youtube for videos on how to clean and fix your 72 pin connector. if that doesnt seem to work maybe its time for a new connector.
Is that straight rubbing alcohol ? I just watched a video where they said to mix alcohol and water 50/50, everyone is telling me something different aaahhh , Apparently they say that alcohol leaves a residue ?!?
my mario bros 2 i bought from a flea market doesnt work now its not that everyday its glitchy not working. when the game is in my nes it doesnt even turn on. can u help me
@1drunkcrustpunk You can try light fluid and a razor blade. Go slow. Let the lighter fluid saturate the sticker first. Before you do this, smoke you're last cigarette before you start. You don't want to smoke while doing this.
@1drunkcrustpunk - A bit belated, but my advice is just to let the dust collect in between the shop's label and manufacturer's label; it'll come off more easily over time. The labels from the manufacturers are meant to stay on indefinitely, while pawn shop stickers are generally more short-lived.
@1drunkcrustpunk YES! Use EUCALYPTUS oil. Just buy a little bottle of it. Peel the sticker off as well as you can without damaging whatever is underneath. Then you may have goopy sticker glue on it, or half peeled off label. Just tip a little EUCALYPTUS oil onto a tissue, and dab it onto the sticker. Maybe even leave it there for a bit. It basically helps dissolve the glue. Either straight away, or after a while, use the tissue to rub the sticker remains off. Do a few times til done!

@1drunkcrustpunk If the stickers are over the label they are next to impossible to remove without removing the label as well. Sorry

@1drunkcrustpunk dunno if you have heard of it but there is sticky stuff remover, its real good.
step1: peel as much of the pawn shop lable off as possible, carefull not to take the game sticker off
step2: put tome sticky stuff remover on a cloth, soft or rough,
step3: clean lightly, you dont want to rub into the game sticker
step4: let any remaining sticky stuff remover dry of dry it with a SOFT cloth

I just got my 4.5 & 3.8 Bits.
I've cleaned all of my cartridge games, but since I opened them up It is hard to believe how dirty game cartridges get inside.

Keep the "All purpose cleaner" off the edges of the label or risk water damage.
You can see it already starting to lift at the end of the video. 1:44
