I remember when Dragon's Lair came out . It looked cool and all in demo mode but no one played it beyond a run or two since there was too much die-to-learn for each scene. The game was so interesting graphics-wise that one couldn't really play it and watch the story unfold at the same time. In short the gameplay sucked.
There was a small game room right outside the place where I worked in 1981. People used to line up to play this game when it was new. It was a little difficult to play on your own, but watching others and where they move the "sticks" enabled me to learn the moves. I died many times, but through those times I watched others and memorized how to win it. When I finally got to the end and won it was very fulfilling. Then I'd go back and win it again a few times to show off my skillz to others.
Yeah, this was nicely done, considering its' age, although the fact they have made a whole drama on moving the joystick to the left instead of right just seems a bit weird. Damn weird if you live in 2011.
This was one of the hardest damn games I ever tried to play. The graphics made it irresistible but man, I wasted so many quarters on this. I could never get past the first scene.
@rooster5500 didn't it cost something ridiculous to? like 50 cents? haha- too rich for my blood... i stuck with zookeeper (where some older kid showed me the reset button underneath the machine for free games).
I was the student game room manager at USC when Dragon's Lair was hot. I was contacted by ABC to get someone for the show. I recommended Ted because he was good at the game, one of the best in the game room. Ted was also a Rubik's Cube champ for his age. I remembered that the taping took forever.
I think it would be amazing if they could ever make a game where you had more direct control over what happened within the game, yet it looked like a lush, hand-drawn animated movie. I don't mean computer graphics that have been "cell-shaded." I mean honest-to-goodness soulful, vintage Don Bluth or golden-era Disney animation.
"The game's enormous contrast with other arcade games of the time created a sensation when it appeared, and was played so heavily that many machines often broke due to the strain of overuse. It was also arguably the most successful game on this medium and is aggressively sought after by collectors." -- Wikipedia...This was a great game! I have fond memories of spending my whole allowance many times over, on this game. Thanks for posting this.
why they don't put this game in a collection or some thing and call it arcade greatest hit or some thing and released it in game console of these days? i have the 3d version but i wana try the original.
With today's RAM technology combined with DVDs, I wonder how much more control of Dirk you could have and have the game still be traditionally hand-drawn instead of everything in 3D.
During this whole video they make it out like its not all that hard but believe me the timing on the button press has to be precise and I know that the last battle with the dragon was HARD. Nobody could flawlessly finish the dragon scene on their first try even experts will miss once or twice.
that game though...I played it, and it was hardly what I'd call a game. Granted, I LOVE Don Bluth's artwork, but....why couldn't this've just been a cartoon?
U gotta understand games back then were like pacman and donkey kong. Nothing was like this out there. Just for that it was special. I don't know if you can really appericate it if you weren't around when it first came out.
Based on how they were saying it works, it sounds like this game would be almost impossible to beat. I remember playing it as a kid, I kept falling down some waterfall and had no idea what I was doing.
We played this on a DVD disk last night and got to the end. I will now give myself a wedgie. That's Incredible is soo SERIOUS! Love the split screens.
Of all the boards to show a failure on... Fire ropes? You know she's done that board a hundred times without issue; those darn cameras can change everything sometimes.
OutStanding!!! Where did you find this incredible Crystal Clear Footage? I have this recorded with a Cassette Tape back in 1983!! That way I could listen to it anytime I wanted!!
*John pressed the sword button too late and that hesitation cost him* I've seen enough hentai to know where this is going.

Funny how they are over analyzing each button push

All I have to say is whoever did the animation has some SERIOUS freakin mother issues.

I think I was able to move the joystick about three times before I died each time as a kid.

What an epic game. I dropped a ton of quarters on Dragon's Lair and never got to the end scene. At least I had fun trying!
