  • Man I love how these bands just rip off each other XD

  • Yes but, there are only 8 notes in an octave, 12 if you go chromatic; and there are only certain rhythms that appeal to the human ear, Jokingly, I've always thought that any composer has pretty much had it post Mozart and Beethoven as they'd already used them all up ... hence we got stuff like putting nails between the strings of pianos etc .. there's a few Louis Armstrong trumpet/cornet solos you'd recognize as guitar solos, and some you'd like to play. Isn't music a wonderful thing?!

  • Man . . . Opeth Loves Camel and Seiges Even Loves Rush :D

  • @21stCenturyRushMan I should check that out and Revive this series at least for a new special.

  • Iluvatar is Marillion's rip off? It's so natural, even they're names are both based on Tolkien's Mythology. Both based on Tolkiens "Silmarillion" book.

  • Just stumbled upon this. Very cool little project! Thanks for putting it together.

  • I love Dream Theater and I really like seing them in these videos.

  • Most of this examples doesn't fit into the plagiarism area, definitely, and some are vague to say the least. Similar rythm patterns, or references inspired by other's people's work or mere coincidences.

The ones that are real plagiarisms is the Camel and Opeth, Marillion and Lluvatar.

Porcupine Tree's spin to harder rock is by miles influenced by Tool, and not only in Lazarus, also in Open Car, but I love both bands, they send different messages and have different sensibilities.

  • So Called Friend and Flood have a very similar riff in one part, but nothing else in both songs resemble each other. Only so many notes and combinations in the world to use...But PT is God.

  • Can-Utility pwns Astral Traveller. Both are great bands though. ..

  • Try Rush - Natural Science. Dream theater - In the presence of Enemies Part 1

  • Genesis - "Fireside Song" - Kansas "Carry On Wayward Son"

Genesis - "Timetable" - Marillion - "Slainte Maith"

  • Genesis "Firth of Fifth " - "Kansas Song For America" (lots)

Genesis "I Know What I Like" - Marillion "Charting The Single" (Bassline and 'Choo Choo To You')

Genesis "White Mountain" (the 'Fang Son Of Great Fang' bit) - Marillion "Grendel" ('The 'Silken Membranes' bit)

Camel's "Mystic Queen" sounds like a Pink Floyd pastiche

King Crimson "21st Century Schizoid Man" - Yes "Heart Of The Sunrise"

King Crimson "21st Century Schizoid Man" - Van Der Graaf Generator "Darkness 11/11"

  • now it makes sense why I don't like the late PT. - 'cause i don't like Tool.

  • Wow it's been a year? amazing... well I'll make another cause I have enough of them....

  • my favourite rip off ever is dream theater peruvian skies chorus follows the exact note for note chord progression of rush afterimage, seriously same key and everything i put the 2 songs on top of eachother and they sync up exactly, and also learning to live dream theater, heart of the sunrise yes, that is another amazing copy

  • @pinkfloydrule27 Yeah, the chill sections with the bass and the synth pads in LtL and HotS.

That same part in Jacob's Ladder, by the way, can be compared to a part near the end of Through the Looking Glass by Symphony X (amazing song, btw).

And that Marillion song kinda sounds like Through Her Eyes by Dream Theater.

  • The intro riff of "Nothing at all", by Gentle Giant sounds a lot like king Crimson "Moonchild" one.

  • The riff of The MArs Volta "Golliath" Jam part sounds a lot like a riff from "21st Century Schizoid MAn", by King Crismon.

  • porcupine tree ----> pink floyd

  • Can Utility and the Coastliners I believe was made to be a nod towards Yes. Early on Genesis where quite fans of Yes, Phil even considered applying for them as a drummer.

  • how about the tom petty - red hot chili peppers issue? XD

  • I've got something new for you: "Race With the Devil" by Al Di Meola and "Acid Rain" by Liquid Tension Experiment. It's not a total ripoff, but "Acid Rain" has a riff that is veeeery similar to another riff in "Race With the Devil." And it makes complete sense because Al Di Meola is one of Petrucci's biggest influences. Listen yourself and see if you can find it. ;)

  • Uhm I don't know about Tool being a PT influence but it's definitely possible. They're just common notes i guess.

  • Yeah true, when one is in Drop D Tuning... such as allot of people say DT's Home is like 46&2 I even thought so...but I Dismiss that one cause it isn't too Blatant.

  • Oh and I've noted to myself the similarities between "Flood" and "So Called Friend," but the PT song just has a better rhythmic flow (HUGE Tool fan as well); also, as a musician, those notes seem to be commonly placed together. It's just natural for the fingers to play em like that.

  • Well I'm a Keyboardist with some knowledge of guitar, so I know some of these are fairly Basic, but I do believe PT Cited Tool as an Influence...I Think.

  • @Spydrfish There's a clip where Wilson says Tool was an influence - you are right.

But let's face it - a lot of bands are so high they steal from themselves....

  • Yeah it's pretty well known that Mikael Ackerfeldt <3 Camel.

  • Isn't Dream Theater's "6:00" a clear Rush influence?

And Porcupine Tree's "The Sky Moves Sideways (Phase II)" makes me think of something by Tangerine Dream or Vangelis.

Isn't Sieges Even's "Seasons of Seclusion" more of a King Crimson ripp off?

  • Well, Think of a near sound alike and I'd do something, otherwise Just influence wouldn't make the video.

  • Pocupine Tree/The Sky Moves Sideways

    sounds like :

    Pink Foyd/Welcome to the Machine

    somewhat

    Great Video!

  • Exactly what I thought when I listened to it today.

The whole Sky Moves Sideways is very similar to the whole Wish you Were Here album. It's awesome, there's no doubt that Steven Wilson derived a lot of influence from Floyd for that album.

  • I have a suggestion, too. Three songs with very similar begining:

Queen - Father to Son (Queen II)

Dream Theater - Surrounded (Images and Words)

Symphony X - Twilight in Olympus (through the looking glass)

I think this has not been mentioned yet :)

  • Years ago cause I had the SymX and DT around hte same time I noticed they sounded the same...then some time later the Queen one but forgot about it, Thanks.

  • Another good video.

  • Got a suggestion, check out The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again" and Coheed & Cambria's "The Hound". The intros sound very similar.

  • Yeah, You're Right...

    Thanks.

  • Hahaha, this is great Spydrfish!

I love Sieges even's RUSH sound though!

    Good work!!!

  • Another nice video spydrfish, good spot with the last one and the marillion one i liked aswell ^^
