I love this version of the Wexford Carol it sums up everything I feel about a truly Irish Christmas. It is simple, harmonic, joyful and a celebration of who and what we are.
Many thanks for this lovely rendition of what must be one the most beautiful pieces of singing ever. It has everything and this is a most e wonderful performance from you singers well done. So glad I found this version of my favourite carol!
THIS is the best version of this carol I've ever heard - kudos to Philip Stopford and Ecclesium and for posting this! I now repost it every December at Facebook and on my Small Cinema blog of music videos (the Jman)
@fgbowen - Rutter arrangement has too many notes and in my opinion is not his best arrangement. This is an excellent example of how the melody can be supported with appropriate lush harmony. Lovely performance in the resonant accoustic of the Cathedral. The alto line is a dream to sing (even for aging Counter Tenors like myself) Llongyfarchiadau Mr Stopford.

@fgbowen I've thought about your comment long and hard. I have performed the Rutter version a few times, and for me it is overly complicated. This traditional Irish melody is one of the most harmonically advanced, so for me a simpler harmonic choral background was required. The beauty of the folk tune is for me the priority.
@fgbowen I actually prefer Stopford's arrangement; I've listened to every one available, this is the BEST one - he kept it simple and it's one of the gems of music history in this form

Really, really eloquent and proof that a good setting can be both simple AND ravishing. Bravo to Philip Stopford and Ecclesium for this gem!

This is such an exquisite hymn sung so beautifully here. For a different, yet magnificent version, check out YoYo Ma and Alison Krause.
